Is the expansion of the AFL ill judged...??!...

Currently we are 3/4 of the way through the fixture and some AFL sides are getting pumped by massive scores...

It raises the question whether the AFL competition is too large for the talent pool...and whether the introduction of the GC and GWS is diluting the quality of the game...

Throw in the global financial crisis and the AFL would have to have serious concerns whether their TV media deal$ are going to keep growing to finance the competition....

This global crisis has to have a financial impact on future club sponsership deals as well...

I really think some sides are going to struggle to stay competitive and financially viable...

And i dont think 'Tanking' will save sides by being more competive...

I think big score losses are going to be more promonent in the future as the season extends and sides that have no chance of making finals are going to taper off in competitive intensity...throw in injuries and poor talent...and we are going to see a side kick 40 goals...

Thats just not good viewing...

you watching the pies and port game as well ;)

good point jak, i too have thought this through in recent weeks that in light of the raft of concessions thrown to GC and GWS , those clubs that in recent years suffered from deficiencies on their list have simply not had the opportunity to bridge the gap....what we are seeing is the weak have in fact got weaker in relative terms. i'm surprised the media haven't got onto this

But Vlad will get his bonus, interesting that they forecast a drop in crowds........are people turning off from the Corrupt and Unequal competition?

The NRL gets more tv audience than the afl it will be interesting when some afl games start drawing NRL crowds.

Your right NQ...thrown in an unequal competition...and we have the start of an ugly situation that no amount of media waffle from the afl is going to change...

Only have to look overseas to the Scottish soccer league to see that Celtic and Rangers totally dominant the competition..

Then its the EPL with its 4 regulars...European cup with the domination by the spanish sides...

Rugby League...Grid Iron...its not an ideal situation for fans and spectators at all...its like watching Ferrari win all the Grand Prix cause they have the money...boring...

at the end of the day, footy is a part of the entertainment industry, people wont tune into crap games....attendances and TV ratings will reflect this. The AFL will stretch the braces on the pants and say everything will level in next years draft however we all know, a bad draft has a 3-5 years lingering stench to it. Boy does this period demand we use every trick in the book to try and punch above our weight:confused:

A few years ago, an enquiry was supposedly required to investigate the state of Victorian teams in the AFL, and all of the interstate teams were flying. How's that going now?

Over-reaction after one year. The status quo was always going to be out of whack for a period of time.

If in five years time, the same sorts of results are happening, then something is possibly wrong. My gut feeling is that the competition will sort itself out by way of natural causes ;)

I agree, very good point jak. After the Melb v Geelong match I started thinking that the AFL has slowly destroyed the game by introducing two extra teams which means the other teams are now struggling to find talented players.

This season we are constantly seeing big defeats, and I don't think that should be happening in a professional league. In the long term some Melbourne teams will struggle to survive.

I hope that doesn't have in AFL. It will get so boring if we only have the same teams making the finals.

I think the talent pool has grown significantly, it wasn't that long ago that a pick outside the top 10 had a poor hit rate but the talent runs deep nowadays.

We picked up Bastinac with pick 21 last year and Freo got Fyfe with pick 20 and there are a lot of top quality players around the mark. This year we got Atley with pick 17 and Harper with 27, 5 or so years ago you just wouldn't look at really good talent that far down and again, there was a lot of really good talent around them.

I think it is just the dawn of the press, clubs with young and inexperienced sides just can't play that level of footy that well or haven't been focusing on playing footy that way. Eagles got Burns last year and they had a radical improvement in the way they play this year.

It will just take a bit longer for other clubs, especially the ones that don't really have a good core group of senior/experienced players.

Burns has been with the Eagles since the end of 2008.

Fair point and I rate Batchelor who was piock 30, ahead of our pick 6 which was Conca although Reece is travelling well.
The rookie list has been so successful, and it's stupid to think that clubs will not take picks 20-80 not so seriously anymore.

Ahh, thought it was Burns, didn't they pinch an assistant from Collingwood last year?

Yeah, if you look at the players picked up last few years the talent runs pretty deep, it is the way players are funnelled through the system now with Auskick and go through the development program, they are picked up a lot earlier than they used to be.

I just think there are too many clubs in the rebuilding phase and the press is the destroyer of young boys who panic under pressure.

If sides do continue to get pumped by large scores...even achieving a regular 40 goal beltings...hope that never happens...

It raises the interesting question when sides get so big and successfull...
eg Real Madrid...Celtic...Rangers...MU...Arsenal...Collingwood...Ferrari...etc...etc...

That we have in effect a defacto monopoly of the competition and whether that situation in itself constitutes a restraint on trade...

And whether a successful legal challenge could be mounted to address the unfairness of the situation...

Interesting to see Collingwood... get broken up into 2 sides! for the benefit of the competition... :p ...

Vlad will still get his bonus and probably a cut from the legal fees on top.

I agree with that to a fair extent , although the reality is that clubs need to look far and wide for their talent which for a number of clubs is beyond their resourcing to do so. That is why I have strongly advocated that with our funds raised we invest in more advanced talent ID and development
