Re: Afl Macakay

It would be a safe bet that you guys will end up undefeated, i'm not 100% sure when but the year after Swans won their last flag they went through undefeated only to loose the granny to Hawks. 2000 and something.

How did you know i was the coach?

I notice every know and again you post on the Bendigo area threads, you played some footy down that way?

I put a few things that you have said in old posts together and figured out who you were.

What was your take on the weekends game?

I have alot of mates that play in the Bendigo and HDF league so i keep an eye out on the threads and give some input occasionally. I did play footy down that way, not in the BFL or HDFL though.

What was my take on the weekends game you ask, well firstly after getting smashed last time we met on your turf by 154 pts i was quite happy with the 127 pt turn around and being more competitive.

You guys have stated you where flat and it was possably the worst youv'e played so far this season, which is fair enough, but i could also say we weren't at are best also, yet got with in 5goals of the top side which gives us some hope if we meet again, well atleast more hope than we had since the last two times you belted us.
Alot would have to go wrong for you guys not to be holding the cup up mid September, and thouroughly deserved.

What pozzy you play?

We may deserve to be holding the cup up based on the season thus far, but we have had it drilled into us this year that we still havent achieved anything as yet and grand finals arent won until the siren sounds on the last day in September.
Sides in the past have gone through being miles in front and not won the flag, we will be doing everything possible to not let this happen at the SeaEagles nest.

When the season is finished i will let you know who i am Pinnacle.

No probs, just curious of your identity thats all.

By the sounds of it North will travell upto Airlie this week undermanned so it will be no suprised if you guys register a big score to finish off the season, will Gav rest any key players b4 the finals or go full throttle as per normal?

Re: Afl Macakay

Have been following the discourse between a Whitsunday ''player'' and the Swans Coach withe great interest as i believe these sides will play of in the big one.
As far as teams going through unbeaten i can't remember if it has been done before.Perhaps achieved by the great Bakers Creek teams 1989-1992 or the powerful Whitsunday premier sides 1993-1996.
Swans and Hawks played off in 2000 with the City boys getting up by a couple of points, dont think either team was unbeaten though.
Most definately Eastern Swans went into the 1999 grannie without dropping a game only to be knocked off by Bakers,so history proves anything can happen.
Incidentally i think Swans will surprise Hawks on Saturday and grab the vital double chance.

Cheers guys.

We have started to plan for a full strength North Mackay this week and nothing else. I doubt Gav will rest anyone, we had 4 out against you blokes but they were all because they were injured and not being "rested".

Fair enough, better to over plan than to under plan, but you'll find they've got a few out with injury plus having to travell plus a lack of interest from nothing to play for.
For their sake i hope they drive up at full strength and keen otherwise it could not be the ideal way to end a season.

Can you see Mooranbah rolling Bakers at Bakers?
Would that through a spanner into things!

They are still a chance to play finals footy so i dont know why they wouldnt be keen to come up here and knock us off.
It is possible that Moranbah will roll Bakers, they have a good record at home in the last couple of home games.

Re: Afl Macakay

Mackay City played Swans at Harrop Park in the under 18's Wednesday night and apparently head of umpires, Joey, said the hardness of the middle of the ground, the cricket pitch area, was unsafe to play football on and submitted an official complaint.
Not good news when a vital game is scheduled there tomorrow plus a final in a fortnights time.

Re: Afl Macakay

Harrop park is a bit of a joke really. The centre pitch area was hard as a rock last week. They seem to look after there cricketing arrangements and forget about there sponsorship deal with afl mackay and afl queensland do harrop park managment. Great playing surface (other than centre area) but change room and spectator facilities ordinary. It will be interesting to see if the league also go with rogers oval for the grand final. We played there a few weeks ago and the ground wasn't in good enough condition to host a grand final.

We (bulldogs) were soundly beaton yesterday by bakers creek. Other results probably would of went hawks def swans and eagles over saints. Bakers were very happy qualifying for finals for 1st time since 04. They will also get a home final which will be to there advantage most likley playing the swannies.

Re: Afl Macakay

Weekends results-

In the battle for the double chance....
Mackay City Hawks 12.14 - 86 def Eastern Swans 8.11 - 59

Bakers Creek 12.17 - 89 def Moranbah 3.8 - 26

Whitsunday Sea Eagles 24.18 - 162 def North Mackay 2.2 - 14

Finals are as followed.

Major Semi - Winner straight through to Grand final, loser plays winner of Minor Semi.
Minor Semi - Loser out, winner plays loser of Major Semi.

Major Semi 29/8/2009 @ Zeolla Park (North Mackay) - Whitsunday Sea Eagles v Mackay City Hawks

Minor Semi 30/8/2009 @ Etwell Park (Bakers Creek) - Eastern Swans v Bakers Creek

Re: Afl Macakay

Interesting to hear that last weekend at the North Mackay rooms after the game on Saturday that there was a big all in brawl between the North Mackay players.
This resulted in some players not making the trip to Airlie on Saturday in a must win game for the Saints.
Can anyone with details shed some light on the incident?

Thats interesting news obviously some unrest after losing to Bakers Creek that day, i had heard there was some inner friction in regards to some officials not coming to terms with missing out on finals after back 2 back flags, but didnt think it would get to fisty cuffs!
I see what gos i can scratch up at training tomorrow night.

Looks like Branchflower had a day out, did he change on the ball at all?
Wouldn't suprise me if he kicked a ton playing as a permenant forward.

Branchy played 50/50 on ball and resting forward.

What is the conclusion on your sides game on the weekend PH and a report on how the hawks played....

Firstly, in regards to the saints brawl, one of our players has a roomy who plays with the saints and he knew nothing of it, strange, , did your opponenet give you your info when you played them last weekend?

Secondly, game summary, we didint capatalise with the 4goal wind in the 1st qtr kicking 1.5 and were chasing butt from there on. They didn't seem to have any stars just every one contributing. we didn't apply enough pressure to the ball carrier and weren't smart enough with our decision making when we had possession of the ball. We still have a few key players out ,which if we get over Bakers this week, we'll need'm back if we are any chance of advancing past week 1 of the finals.
The few out weren't the reason we lost, we had enough of it just beaten by the better side on the day.
I can't see them troubling you guys too much, they may lift a cog being a final but you guys would have to be off your game for 4qtrs not advance straight in2 the granny. The Swans are obviously hoping getting over Bakers unscaved and then returning to Harrop park facing a bruised and battered Hawks after a hard tough game from the Eagles, maybe i tanked last week to finish 3rd? maybe not!

How do you guys fancy the Saints oval, it was hard under foot last time i played there a month ago but am lead to believe its been heavily watered recently.

Interesting to hear that, one of our reserves players told me after the game, he heard it from the North Mackay bloke he played on earlier.:confused:

Sounds like you had an off day, better to get it out of the road now rather then have it during the finals.
You are making it sound alot easier then it is going to be for us, finals footy is alot different then regular season footy, if you are off your game you will get hurt by the opposition.
We are pretty lucky to have alot of blokes in our side that have played in finals series to pass knowledge onto the younger blokes.

Personally i think North Mackays ground is pretty good, it was a bit hard when we played there last time but every ground was around then.

I never meant it to sound like it's going to be a walk in the park but the Eagles have finished the season off undefeated for a reason, and like i said you would win comfortably against the Saints, i'm pretty sure you guys will do enough this week to get the cookies and rest up for the granny, but stranger things have happened hence St.kilda the past fortnight.
Speaking of St.kilda, what do you think about all the hype that the loss will do them good, being that the eagles are undefeated, personally do you think it wouldnt of hurt to drop a game recently or winning form is good form?

a couple of other great conundrums to ponder.....
How long is a piece of string?

Which came first the chicken or the egg?

I think a loss only does a side good if that side loses their hunger. The way St Kilda has played the last couple of weeks it looked to me that they had lost that hunger that they have had all year (example of this would be they have been out tackled the last 2 weeks). We got a wake up call against you guys a couple of weeks ago then played a really good brand of footy against North Mackay on the weekend. So in terms of the games that St Kilda have dropped will do them good, we had our loss against you blokes now have some really good momentum back.

Thats easy , just measure how long the piece is ands theres your answer!

Which came first the chicken or the egg?
Obviously the chicken came 1st or the joke would've been ,"why did the egg cross the road".

Next question?

Re: Afl Macakay

What do you blokes think about the way the finals are structured? Grounds are set out before the season even starts for where the finals will be played, im not sure how they work it out maybe some sort of rotational system.

Do you think in the future they could explore giving whoever finishes first a home final in the major semi, obviously this has come to my attention because we have so far gone through undefeated. We find our selves travelling down to Mackay for the Major Semi which i feel should have advantage for the team that finishes on top, but if anything the game being played at North Mackay would favour the Hawks due to travel time.

It doesnt really worry me a great deal just thought it might be a good topic.

The finals structure is based on Whitsunday gets the pre-season carnival and Mooranbah gets the City v Country rep game leaving the Mackay clubs each to host a final.
I understand where your coming from, lets say the eagles v Mackay City final was at Harrop Park this week due to its sheduling at the start of the season, then City finishing 2nd get a home final so there wouldn't been any advantage , bar mental, finishing top.

I believe the best ground and location should be used to showcase the finals, regardless if the home team are in the finals or not, and that is Harrop Park pending a soft centre that is!
They should play a night final for the minor semi followed by the elimination on the sunday.
Obviously the league gets the gate but after umpires and ground fee's are paid the remainder to be divy'd out to all the clubs.
Also each club puts in a tender to have beer tent or food stand etc.. situated around the ground to boost the clubs funding.

Re: Afl Macakay

Talking of finals and grounds perhaps the league could look at having the following : Super semi's saturday of football at harrop park

game 1: reserves 3 v 4 12noon
game 2: reserves 1 v 2 2.10
game 3: seniors 3 v 4 4.30pm
game 4: seniors 1 v 2 7.20pm

Then the Prelim and Grand Final to go back to normal times on a saturday.

looking forward to this weeks games, the eagles will have to much forward power (galonski, o'reilly, pollard and co) for the hawks to handle and should win by around 40 points IMO. Should be a good battle through the midfield though with Branchflower, Boase, Bond up against butcher, drew and davis.

Sunday's game i think the swans will have to many avenues to goal compared to BC. They rely on X Smith to kick the bulk of there goals where as the swans have edwards, walker and few of there onballers chipping in. Should be a good contest though with BC having an advantage of playing at home.

I have had a crack at an AFL Mackay team of the year:

B: D Ada (W), S Thomas (NM), J Drefke (BC),
HB: R Hollows (NM), D Hartley (ES), D Nestor (W)
C: B Ridgley (M), C Butcher (MC), M Sondergeld(ES)
HF: B McGrath (W), N O'Reilly (W), D Boase (W)
F: M Galonski (W), G Evans (MC), C Dowdell (NM)
R: A McMahon (NM), P Branchflower (W), T Bone (M)
I: D Semmler (M), B Drew (MC), I Walker (ES), R Usher (ES)

Obivoulsy hard to fit everyone in especially players from Whitsunday. Blokes like M Pollard (W), D Edwards (ES), B Crosbie (BC) (Injured), H Brown (ES), D Lambert (W) just to name a few could quite easily be in the team.

What are everyones thoughts on the league medal?
My tips:
Rookie of year: J Drefke (BC)
M J Miller Medal: P Branchflower with C Butcher to come runner up
Keg Award: Branchflower to win from Hartley (ES)

Ah i see well it makes sense to me.

Harrop Park will always be a cricket venue firstly over a football venue so the centre wicket will always be hard for the football season.
I was speaking with JK when we played the Hawks and he said that the centre wicket gets fenced off and they arent aloud to run on it at training, makes doing some drill a bit hard.
Mackay AFL need to look at the contract they have there and get some things changed.
