AFL Name a Game DVD's and other related methods of acquiring matches

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Just a question - have any BigFooty members had any experience (or their family/friends) with AFL Name a Game/Sports delivered? Are they generally pretty punctual in getting matches out to you? Is it possible to order the games and collect them from their offices in person?

Would be much appreciated.

Additionally, are there any other reliable shops/companies through which you can order DVDs/videos of matches? Thanks in advance.

Hey Johnson...empty your inbox...lol.

Been trying to PM you.:thumbsu:

this is true in essence.

Just have a look at the list of games that Name A Game offer on their catalogue.

Everything from 1995 onwards they have copied and there is very little before that.

They don't even have some of the finals games from the 1980's and practically nothing from the 70's.

Fitzroy vs Essendon -elimination final 1981 - ba-bow!

Collingwood vs Fitzroy - 1st semi final 1981 - ba-bow!

carlton vs Hawthorn - 2nd semi 1986 - ba-bow!

carlton vs Sydney - qualifyting final 1986 - ba-bow!

and the list goes on and on... none of those games exist anymore.

Without Channel 2's program of The Winners very little footage from the 1980's would have survived.

They have this game, 7 showed it on 'footy flashbacks'

Has anyone used sports delivered in the last 12 months???? I'm tempted to buy some games

I have used it a great deal.

The service is generally good, but many games before 2003 will require a substantial wait to master from VHS. It is a little expensive to buy games for $35, but many games which I have bought are genuine treasures, like the Eagles’ brilliant win over Footscray in slippery conditions from 1991, where Peter Sumich gave what i would regard as the best display in recent times by a full forward. Thirteen goals with a ball that is hard to mark must be some feat!

I went on yesterday and found you can't pay with a credit card anymore. I asked why and they said it was due to "stability issues".

I bought 4 games from Name a Game last Friday and they arrived today.

Easy As.
Were those recent games or older ones? As a person interested in older games, I know a good deal about the making of Name A Game DVDs, both from stock DVDs (if a game has only one copy it has to be made again) and from VHS.

Although Christina Ganaban has told me that Collingwood’s premiership win - along with the drawn Grand Final and the NRL premiership - has made him very busy with the making of huge numbers of DVDs, I managed to get a 1987 Fitzroy v Brisbane game copied within four days when I ordered it directly in-store.

Were these games from the 80's or recent games?
I'm not a big fan of waiting for them to master from vhs. Surely this has already been done from an AFL approved company
This is the AFL approved company.

The BBC runs a campaign to find lost episodes of an enormous number of TV shows that they taped over up until the late 70's. For example whole chunks of Doctor Who from the 60's are still missing, but many rediscovered programs were found in overseas/out of area locations.

I know that there isn't going to be missing VFL matches sitting in a vault in London, but surely there should be an attempt to publically list the games that we officially know a copy exists [via the AFL, broadcasters etc] and then launch a campaign to find what the public has taped.

Surely if we are talking a final from the early 80's a tape [even an old dirty domestic betamax] is sitting in someone's house.

Rewards those with 'finds' with season tickets or grand final tickets so we can at least get to the stage where its widely known that the oldest match without footage is round 18, 1978 etc.

Mastering from VHS

There was no mastering from VHS until 2003 when VHS was phased out, and many games (including some of great interest at least to me) have not been requested since then, though they were kept by Name A Game (a number of critical losses like West Coast v Melbourne and Footscray v Carlton from 1991 and Essendon v Melbourne from 1996 have occurred). examples are:

  1. St. Kilda v West Coast, Round 18 of 1992
    1. Close to the Saints’ all-time best V/AFL performance, with some amazing skills on a soaked ground and equally so on the dry ground of the first half. Sumich was kickless for three quarters and the Saints kicked 14-3 (87) to 2-8 (20) after quarter time.
  2. Fremantle v Sydney, Round 14, 1997
    1. A torrentially wet night at the WACA, when the Swans did not goal until the seventeen minute mark of the third quarter! Perhaps the wettest AFL game ever: the lowest score against Fremantle and lowest aggregate by them of 9-27 (81).
  3. Collingwood v West Coast, Round 2, 1991
    1. A classic of the Eagle defence, showing how they developed Collingwood’s style to dominate the 1990s.

Can't remember exactly when they started covering every match, but think it was around the mid-90's. Certainly during the VFL years, only three matches per week were covered since all games were played at 2pm Saturday and there weren't enough cameras or commentators to go around. World Of Sport would show a few seconds of grainy, slow-motion footage from the other three games on the Sunday.

What is frustrating is that the AFL don't have an online system for downloading games.

Torrents rely on having people seeding them to be able to get good dl speeds. Games that might be a bit odd, (i.e. a random game from the mid 90s) take ages to download.

If they could set up a system where you could dl a game from AFL for a reasonable price i would be happy to pay for it.

$35 for a game is insane. They could make it so much cheaper if they didn't have DVD, cases or postage. This method is already archaic.

No wonder AFL torrents are thriving.

Hi all

My name is Christian Ganaban. I am the AFL Name A Game and sportsdelivered online manager. I am joining this thread so that you have someone directly to discuss any feedback whether good or bad.

To give a bit of a background I joined the Visual Entertainment group about 5 months ago and in my time like to think I have made several positive changes, particularly in service to our customers. I have come from 6 years of online experience working for Australia's number 1 automotive website carsales.com.au

Someone mentioned that we removed the credit card payment facility and this is true. The "stability issues" are correct and we will not put it back online until we get a resolution that does not compromise our customers.

Another query we always get is cost of the games. As the home and away games and final series (except GF) are not mass produced there is significant cost in getting these games duplicated. There are also costs in the other bits printing and packing but what most people overlook are the royalty payments we have to pay.

If the games had been mass produced and stamped then it would be a different story. We are always looking at ways to reduce costs!

Timing is also a common query I get. Depending on whether an item is in stock or not I like to think we can get it out to you within 3-5 business days. If we need to order the game in allow 6-10 business days and if mastering from original VHS is required this can take 4-6 weeks.

Any other question please do not hesitate to reply to this thread or contact me directly thru the site.

Kindest regards

Christian

Mate, why are there so few games from 1987/1988/1989 available?
Are you guys trying to hunt these games down, or just content with the current catalogue you have at the moment?
I've been looking for a copy of the Eagles first game vs Richmond in 87 for years!!! Surely SOMEONE must have access to this game, and surely you guys as official AFL carrier can track these games down.

Exactly. I want some of our H&A games from these years as well but there is basically nothing available. I guess if the master tapes are lost then we can only hold out hope for highlights shown on Saturday Night Replays. There is a guy on youtube who has a stackload of footage from the 80's but the clips are only 3-4 minutes each and he is not willing to make copies of any of his footage.

Games from 1988, 1989 and first 15 rounds of 1990 were erased by Seven

RichoWAPT,

Sorry to repeat it, but during 1990 Channel Seven erased all its footage of home-and-away games from before the sixteenth round of that year. The Hawthorn v Geelong game of 1989 was so popular that it had to be kept, but apart from 1987 when the ABC had the rights nothing else was kept. Even ProFootball copies of home-and-away games from 1986 have not been considered economic to keep.

There is a small hope more games from 1987 may exist on VHS in the master library. Christian and me have dug out four home-and-away games from 1991 to 1993 that were not originally listed (West Coast v Geelong 1992 and North Melbourne v St. Kilda 1993 have still not been added due to the Grand Final replay and rush from Collingwood’s premiership), but the issues of Inside Football from which I found these games did not catalogue the 1987 games currently available. This gives me hope that these 1987 games were added to the Name A Game catalogue after 1993, in which case there is a possibility some are missing from the site. If I had the money to visit Sydney or Canberra, I would be able to check later Inside Football issues to see if the 1987 games were added after 1993, and to note any games not listed on-site today.

However, I would be very wary of expecting much:

  1. only about a quarter of all games missing from 1991 to 1993 have been found in the master library
  2. even if some 1987 tapes not listed on-site are found, there is no certainty that they would be in a condition suitable for mastering to DVD

Re: Games from 1988, 1989 and first 15 rounds of 1990 were erased by Seven

Surely there are numerous people around who have their own VHS collections of many games from the lost era's. There are many on this site alone who I know of. Sure not all of these will be in the best condition however we should try and pool our resources together and try and get as much of this footage into a digital format to preserve it and set up some digital or online archives.

I am in the process of converting all of my VHS games onto HDD however this will be a long process. This includes stuff from 1987-1990 and from 1994 onwards though most of the pre-1990 stuff is Finals games only and some is not in the best condition. For instance I have the second half of the classic R22 game from 1987 Melbourne v Footscray at Western Oval when Melbourne made the finals for the first time in 23 years and were relying on the Hawks to win at Kardinia Park on the same day to secure the finals berth. However when I tried converting it to HDD it turned out jumpy due to the quality of the tape and my VCR. I have a newer VCR now so I hold out hope that I may still be able to convert it in a watchable condition. The same goes for the 1989 NIght Grand Final Melbourne v Geelong of which I have the entire game on VHS and a few other old ones.

I was looking through some tapes the other day and found a couple of games which had the whole game but the last 30 seconds was missing and another with the first 3 and 1/2 quarters and then the last 15 minutes missing. These were from the last decade though so these games will be available through Name-A-Game.

Re: Games from 1988, 1989 and first 15 rounds of 1990 were erased by Seven

There's a guy over at a certain aussierules torrent site who's been puttin gup some great older games. D'loaded the Eagles/Hawks Rd 7. in 1991 among others. Not always the best quality, but definitely worth the bandwidth.

Re: Games from 1988, 1989 and first 15 rounds of 1990 were erased by Seven

I noticed that 1991 game, what is the quality like?
It's a comparably small file size so I wasn't sure if I should get it or not.

Channel 7 have the WCE vs Richmond game from Round 1 1987, they showed the first and last qtr on Footy Marathon about 5 years ago. Not sure why they're hoarding it.

If only I could find the vhs tape I recorded it on ........

Re: Games from 1988, 1989 and first 15 rounds of 1990 were erased by Seven

As an Essendon fan I've just been able to walk into the Bombershop at Windy Hill and purchase any games that catch my eye there, and they have the facility where you can order games not in stock through them.
I suppose they get most of their stuff from the companies we've already been discussing, however..

Re: Games from 1988, 1989 and first 15 rounds of 1990 were erased by Seven

One thing that interests me is the 1987 games. A lot of these were broadcast on the ABC, so hopefully they're in some archive somewhere.

As for other games - Channel 7 may have wiped the tapes from their Melbourne offices, but would they have done it in Perth? Would be interesting to see if some of those old Eagles games that people are chasing are in the Channel 7 WA archives.

Not the best quality - but not the worst by any stretch of the imagination.

I have read a few posts by Mianfei and note that he is particularly interested in getting a copy of WCE v Melbourne from R1, '91. This game was previously available on VHS thorugh Name-A-Game but is no longer in their catalogue. What I want to know is why some of these previously available games are no longer available? It shouldn't be due to Channel 7 deleting their old games as this one was previously available on Name-A-Game.
