Names on jumpers, good idea?

I've always enjoyed the traditional number on the back as the identifier.

Players have links with their numbers like few other sports. Players make numbers famous at clubs and within the AFL. It is a brilliant tradition.

BUT I changed my mind when I started getting into the A-League. I never thought I would interest myself in it. But I slowly started to enjoy it. And when you are new to a sport, identifying with the players is a key element of that. I needed the names on the back. It helped me get "sucked in" to the sport.

And I think that's the biggest key here. We may lose some traditional aspect of the game if we have names on the back, but we won't lose any fans over it. But there's every chance we could gain fans out of it.

Don't understand the point of the trial though. You either do it or you don't. We know what this one looks like.

Costa sports did some mock ups in 2012, love his work.

They don't look cluttered at all.

Would be surprised if Collingwood go along with this. After all this is a change to their guernsey and we know how Eddie will move heaven and earth to prevent a change to the Collingwood guernsey

I know every player on my own team, but not every player from every other team. I like to watch games as a neutral, especially blockbusters or games with a bearing on the top ladder positions. Watching these games I don't know every player, so it might be helpful to have player names on jumpers. We'll see of course.

Yet another reason to despise Vlad and the ever increasing Americanization of our great game as far as I'm concerned.

your spelling is amusing

The commentators don't always talk about what's going on (e.g. Bruce prattling on about Judd or Rioli while the play has moved on from them), and if you're starting to get interested in footy, being able to follow it for yourself despite the commentators is a good thing. If you're watching it in a pub, which is how a lot of noobs are exposed to footy and you can't hear the call, then you can start picking up who the players are.

I don't know what the problem is. It's not like they're getting rid of the numbers and replacing them with the names. This is good for numbers and names people.
True but please tell me how you expect to be able to read the names on the back of the jumpers. I doubt you could when they are standing still, let alone when they are running around in all directions.

Of course the majority of people here on BigFooty won't like it, it isn't designed for you. It's designed for NSW/QLD, overseas, and those casual fans that aren't passionate enough to go on here.

You only read them when you can around stoppages, when plays are linking up, etc. How do NFL watchers do it? At least we've got the advantage of seeing player's faces.

Process of deduction.
  • 11 players on the field from one team at any time.
  • Huge numbers on both sides of the jersey, which constitute practically the only thing that stops the jersey from being just a plain single colour.
  • Numbers indicate the position that they play and most positions, especially on offence usually suggest a specific body type.
  • Positions are much more rigid in American football and you pretty much know exactly what position a guy is playing from where he is located on the field most of the time.
  • Offensive lineman - as a general rule - don't really matter (in the sense that only the diehards usually know who they are, especially on other teams) and no casual observer worries about them individually in the slightest.

It's also a lot of dudes in one place on a much smaller field. As someone who only watches the occasion Super Bowl and Friday Night Lights episode, it makes very little sense to me so I need all the help I can get.

If you can see the names on occasion then that'll be handy. There's a lot of stoppage work, dudes getting up off each other, other dudes chasing dudes, which the cameras pan along with, so while names won't always be visible, they will be environmentally.

Has to happen. If you are going to move the game into new areas such as Queensland and NSW more then names on jumpers has to happen. New fans will more easily recognize players and put names to faces.

I really also don't see what the big deal is. If THIS is what gets you furious you must have a pretty bloody good life at the moment.
If they're that interested in AFL, then there's nothing stopping them from looking up an unknown player. You do that at games and at home. I like the nostalgia and history associated with Judd, Gibbs, Walker, Menzel, Waite, Tuohy, etc. wearing just their famous Carlton numbers. We don't need to be reminded that Thomas will wear 39.

The AFL and clubs will push it through once the club's bean counters realise they can make money by selling personalised. More change for the sake of change.

People have to got to shed themselves of this mentality. It's not a matter of "if they're interested", it's a matter of making them interested, and making it easier for them to be interested.

I can't see how anyone could be bothered by this and I think a lot of you will be silenced when you watch a game on tv and realise you can actually see quite a few names. Players aren't constantly sprinting with their fronts to the cameras. Players will also still be associated with their numbers, the same as they have always been.

I imagine somebody at HQ figured the big name FA moves would equal big merchandising $ if guernseys had names on them. Franklin & Thomas alone would equal enormous revenue.

Only if the game is on Fox, if it is on 7 in their crappy SD you wont see squat

Ok. How are you going to get them into AFL? Also no one who is only just starting to get into AFL, will study the names of 24 blokes to learn the names. The easiest way to get the fans to associate with players is with names on jumpers. If the AFL took your view of things the whole game would be in the same sh!t hole league is in right now. You cannot spend the money the AFL has on expansion without making it more attractive (particularly in a way which will have no impact on the game at all). At the end of the day if this help get more fans in Sydney and GC every fan is going to benefit from it.

This possibly means that the way the game is telecasted will change, a lot more camera shots from the back, running in for shot at goal, kick outs, free kicks so on, What the nah sayer geniuses don't get this will mean that sponsor value will sky rocket due to the extra exposure. Smart clubs will embrace this with open arms, Those dogs north saints demon roos supporters who don't like this have shit for brains, this is a good thing you and the rest of the clubs. What's wrong with the AFL and the clubs making extra cash, better this, than a ****ed up equalization tax at the gate.
