Any truth to the rumours I’m hearing Collingwood silvers aren’t getting upgraded? That they are prioritising other club silvers as Collingwood have “too many” gold members.

They need to be able to offer guaranteed GF tickets to all Gold level club support members, so there may be something to that. If Collingwood plus the next highest club was beyond the GF capacity, they would have a problem.

I agree, it would be problematic for the AFL, but it’s also not fair for these whom are being surpassed by silvers not waiting as long.

Yep I can see both sides. But if Collingwood has too many members, not sure what else they can do. They can’t really upgrade them then potentially not give them a GF ticket - a guaranteed GF ticket if your team is playing is probably the biggest drawcard of the membership.

Where did you hear this rumour? It would make sense to me, but they should be transparent about it.

Feels like a bit of an urban legend, Collingwood silver members would know pretty quickly if they were progressing slower than other members. However the fact they're not transparent with club support numbers (for what reason??) gives it oxygen.

Join the AFL Members Association and ask the question. They meet with the AFL annually and have a group on Facebook. Think you just have to let the page mod know your AFL membership number (not barcode) and name and he'll add you to the mailing list. Don't want to add his email here without his consent but pm me and I'll send through if you want.

For me the Grand Final last Saturday was my 30th* grand final. I will keep paying my AFL membership whilst it gives me access.

* not quite all 30 were in the AFL members. In 1996 I was still silver (or restricted) but had a concession North membership because I would often go to North games with my dad and got a ticket through that. 2001, 2002, 2003 I was a Gold AFL member (or Full member I think it was called) but I was involved in the TAC Cup curtain raiser and had a ticket in the Northern Stand through that.

From memory it was done via form and posted in. You could have a max of 10 members on the ballot. And you were only allowed 1 entry per barcode. If your barcode was drawn twice neither would get a ticket. And I believe it was only Gold members as we had a extra that went separately and missed out.

Club of support gave you no priority prior to 2002 as that was the first year.

My memory was from 1992-1997 there was walk up, but you could purchase a reserved seat as there were a small number of reserved seats (probably 10% of the reserve).

1998 was the first year of all reserved seats in the reserve. Why do I know that? Because in 1997 I was a 2nd year Sports Management student and conducted the survey for the AFL to determine whether members wanted to change.

My memory of the first couple of years of reserved seats were they were on sale before Grand Final week. By 2000 that must have changed because Essendon beat Carlton in the prelim (thank god - we all know what happened in 1999) and then as a group we took it in shifts to line up until the seats went on sale.

I expect 2001 was the same although as per another post, I didn't go in the members that year because I was part of the Calder Cannons and we played (and won) the curtain raiser and were given seats in the Northern Stand.

Surely you would know as a Collingwood member if you’re being surpassed to Gold by other club members?
People regularly share when they joined and what number they are on the list. Couldn’t be too hard to figure it out?

Btw I joined in ‘08 and got gold in 2016. I know it became a crawl to gold if you signed in 2010 and thereafter.

2010/11 seemed to be when so many current members joined. One club played 3 grand finals in those 2 years.

That's why Collingwood v anyone is a worse result for non club support members. We saw this GF that any Gold member who wanted a ticket got one.

Hopefully their age profile means we have dodged that bullet for the next few years.
