Sydney withstand a furious fourth-quarter fightback from Canberra to record a thrilling 22-point victory.

Sydney set up their win by kicking 10 goals to 6 in the first half. Key forwards Nick Hey and Zac Youlten kicked 7 goals between them in the first half as Sydney dominated the midfield through James Tidemann, Cooper Donald, Lachlan McNamara and Henry Gosse. Canberra stayed in the game via accurate kicking, kicking 6 goals from 7 effective attempts in the first two quarters.

Canberra made huge changes at the start of the third quarter. Burly ruckman Jake Maynard went to full-forward, Aidan Bowyer stayed rucking the entire term and the classy Matt McGrory swung onto the ball. McGrory, Riley Budd and Joel Dunstall started to win the clearances as Canberra just won the term 4 goals to 3. A pivotal moment came with Sydney 44 points up; as Sydney kicked a goal, forward Byron Laws was nabbed for a blocking free kick as the Sherrin sailed through the goalposts. Canberra struck immediately and a possible 50-point lead became a 38-point lead in less than a minute.

Onto a huge final term where Maynard proved a massive task for Sydney, with no ideal match-up other than perhaps ruckman Mitchell Blow, who played at fullback in a magnificent performance on Anzac Day but required to play on Bowyer and then Maynard on-ball. Canberra pegged the lead back to 10 points through hard running and a clear momentum swing, then Maynard had a marking contest 15 metres out from goal. Jerome Lawrence JUST got back and swept the ball away from Maynard at a critical juncture. Sydney then kicked the final two goals of the match to record an accomplished 22-point victory.

Kale Gabila won the Best on Ground Medal for Sydney. Others to shine for Sydney were Tidemann, Donald, McNamara, Laws and Gosse. Joel Dunstall was adjudged Best on Ground for Canberra. Canberra was also well-served by McGrory, Maynard, Budd, burly forward Jack Powell and Bowyer.

A defensive masterclass from AFL Sydney kept the vastly improved AFL Canberra outfit to just 2 goals in running out 23-point winners on a warm May afternoon in the nation’s capital.

In a game where tackling and intercept marks were features of a dogged, attritional clash, Sydney set up their victory with a 3 goal to 1 first half, which included keeping Canberra scoreless in the second quarter. Sophie Kavanagh and Megan Mifsud starred in the first half for Sydney, alongside key backs Renee Tomkins, Lauren Bull and Gabby Eaton (Sydney) and the superb Madison Lustri in the ruck and Maddie Dwyer (both from Canberra), who can pack her bags for Southport in mid-July after repelling Sydney’s forwards on countless occasions with her brilliant intercept marking.

In the third quarter, Canberra and Queanbeyan midfielder Jayde Hamilton took it upon herself to win contested ball and get the Canberra side back into the game. Alongside Belconnen star Grace Read and the ageless Michelle Foscarini, Hamilton took over the midfield in a thrilling third stanza.

Amazingly, only one goal was kicked in the third quarter, by Mifsud, as Tomkins in particular stood up magnificently to raid after raid by Canberra, all driven by the desperate Hamilton and Read. Tomkins, playing in the absolute last line of defence, blanked Canberra star Ryeli Fleming and could be considered unlucky not to have won the Sydney Best on Ground Medal from fullback, so complete was her performance.

The teams traded a goal each in the final term. Canberra started well, kicking the first goal via Read, but Sydney settled in the back half of the final term to record a hard-earned 23-point victory.

Sydney’s best on ground was the very much in-form Lauren Bull. Other best players for Sydney were Tomkins, Eaton, Kavanagh, Mifsud and rover Lucy Yates, who picked up 32 touches in a sparkling display. Read was adjudged Canberra’s best player. Other stars for the hosts were the magnificent Dwyer, Hamilton, Foscarini, the athletic Lustri and Shannon Brown.

UTS returned to the winners’ circle with an emphatic 82-point win over the struggling East Coast Eagles at a rainswept Waverley Oval.

The Bats kicked 11 goals to 2 in the first half as their running game and slick movement proved too much for the Eagles. The Eagles tripled their score in the fourth quarter as they saved some face, with UTS slightly taking the foot of the pedal in the final 30 minutes as they coasted to victory.

Considering the conditions (it rained for the entire four quarters), UTS provided some scintillating football at times, despite Eagles ruckman Scott Brown dominating the ball-ups all day. For the first time in many seasons, the Bats are entitled to look toward September. Next Saturday sees a decisive test for UTS – they have North Shore at Gore Hill, one of AFL Sydney’s toughest away trips.

Ash Backlund and Blake Tabe kicked 4 goals each for UTS (Backlund would have almost reached double figures had he had his kicking boots on). ROUND 8 PREVIEW New
MEN'S PREMIER DIVISION

Top of the ladder is on the line as Pennant Hills and South-West Sydney face off at Mike Kenny; while North Shore and UTS’s battle will go a long way towards determining the fate of the top five. Sydney Uni completes the top five, with Manly a game behind. It’ll take something special for any of the bottom four teams to make the finals from here; there’s a lot of ground to make up.

WOMEN'S PREMIER DIVISION

With only one goal so far this season, there’s plenty of work to be done to reset and become more competitive when they return to action. North Shore v UTS will be a key battle in the fight for ladder positions, while the other teams in the top five have games against bottom-four teams. With more than three games separating fifth from sixth, unless something truly out of the ordinary happens over the remainder of the season, we likely already have our final five.

Pennant Hills have the bye this week.

North Shore were too strong for UTS at Gore Hill Oval, comfortably winning by 59 points.

Make no mistake, this was a menacing performance from North Shore, and the Bombers will have noted that they relaxed slightly in the last quarter, something they will not do as they head into September. The Bombers midfield was superb, consistently given first use of the ball from giant ruckman Frane Babic.

The game was basically over at half-time, as North Shore led by 44 points at the main break. Their superb organisation across half back and the midfield were simply too much for UTS, with the Bombers footspeed a real highlight in a clinical display from the two-time reigning premiers.

Small forward Patrick Bolger had a field day, kicking 5 goals. Matt Buskariol, Nick Pavlou, and Max Thomas all chimed in with 2 majors apiece. Thomas Charles kicked 2 goals for the Bats.

North Shore’s best players were Pavlou, AFL Sydney midfielder Cooper Donald, Bolger, Sean Netting, Matthew Sidhu, and Buskariol. UTS was best served by Henry Gosse, Ash Backlund, AFL Sydney fullback Lewis McCormack, James Warton, Nick McGill, and Justin Ryan.

On a day where magnificent goal kicking (the two teams kicked 35 goals from 47 attempts) was a feature, Manly Warringah (who kicked 13 of the 20 goals in a highlight-reel second quarter) ran away to a crushing 74-point victory over Inner West Magpies at Picken Oval.

After an extraordinary 20-goal second quarter that sent the statisticians racing for their record books, Manly led by 53 points at the main break. The Wolves then kicked 6 goals to 3 in the second half as they closed the gap on fifth-placed UTS ahead of their crucial clash at Weldon Oval on 13 June.

Phelan Medallist Kale Gabila kicked 6 goals for the Wolves in a superb display. Oliver Griffiths and representative forward Zac Youlten kicked 3 goals each for Manly. Lachlan Tiziani shone for Inner West in kicking 4 goals, with Ryder Eberhard, skipper Cal McEvoy-Gray and stalwart Ben Zoppo chiming in with 2 majors each for the Magpies.

The Bulldogs led by 6 points at half-time but, crucially, kicked only 5 goals from 15 effective shots on goal. In a topsy-turvy final quarter, key Eagles forward Marshall Poynter kicked 3.2 on his own, including the match-winner in the 25th minute of an amazing final term.

Competition frontrunners South West Sydney produced an astonishing performance at Mike Kenny Oval, thrashing the in-form Pennant Hills Demons by 65 points.

The Blues kicked 13 goals to 5 after quarter-time, as they disposed of the talented Demons for the second time this season. The Blues sit at 7-1 and look ahead to a monster home clash on 13 June at Rosedale Oval, hosting premiers North Shore in a simply enormous Round 9 fixture.

This was a huge statement game for the Blues, with the Demons coming off a demolition of Sydney Uni 7 days earlier. South West Sydney head into a week off chock full of confidence and relishing the opportunity of having a real crack at the Bombers.

Jerome Lawrence kicked 4 goals for the Blues, with Sullivan O’Dwyer kicking 3 majors and Matt Belbasis and Ed Cole chiming in 2 goals apiece. Cooper Lee kicked 2 goals on a disappointing day for the Demons.

UTS Bats: -

In an overwhelming performance that will have the rest of the competition taking notice, North Shore destroyed UTS by 98 points at Gore Hill Oval.

What was scary about this performance was the utter dominance from North Shore’s midfield and the fact that the Bombers delivery into their forward was only average, with UTS dropping extra players into the backline in an attempt to thwart the back and red tsunami that came their way on a warm day at Gore Hill.

Lily Sullivan kicked 3 goals for North Shore, with key forwards Adrienne Keeffe and Abbey Martin chiming in with 2 goals each.

UTS simply had no answer to the supremely athletic Sophie Kavanagh, who ran at will and was at times unstoppable. Grace Hill tagged Olivia Morris all day and nullified the talented Morris in an excellent performance. Other Bombers to shine were Zoe Hurrell, Liv O'Donnell, Sullivan, and Keeffe. UTS was best served by fullback Gabriella Stanwix, Hannah Cerezo, Georgina McDonnell, Zoe Bush, Brianna-Lee Wade, and Annie Lord.

The Bulldogs gained valuable experience playing at Blacktown, where they seem destined for at least 2 finals in September. UNSW-ES led by 33 points at half-time and continued with the job in the second half, all whilst keeping the Eagles scoreless.

Gun forward Rebecca Privitelli kicked 3 goals for the Bulldogs, whilst Taylor Smith chimed in with 2 majors.

Manly have stars on every line and an excellent midfield and will need all their best players to shine in the second half of the season as they strive for a Top 3 finish at the very least.
