So GWS get the licence by default (assuming they put in a bid - maybe they won't either). But if so, be interesting to see how they run it given a lot of their players will (presumably) be from Canberra.

I believe theres some sort of zoning in place - which includes all of NSW/ACT and for some reason Tasmania

It's more in the context of running a team with players based in Sydney and Canberra (and probably a few in the Riverina as well). Do you force them to move? Have multiple training groups in different cities?

I'd expect the team to be based at Blacktown - even that's a hike if you live on the North shore. There's not the talent in NSW/ACT so they can't really afford to lose good players, so they're probably going tohave to do something to accommodate them.

Pretty good questions - it's the one team which will have as many players coming from outside the capital city as from within.

Adelaides operation includes the NT in its zone....

We know their bid contains some sort of development obligation for the NT, and some sort of zone, but we don't really know how many women from the NT would be ready for the national league.

In the case of the Giants, half of their players, maybe more, will come from outside of Sydney, i.e. half of their starting 18.

Not a problem, the AFL will throw money at it, problem solved ... bar the demand part of the equation.

No word from GWS that they will bid , would imagine they would face the similar problem to Sydney in lack of resources.
Unless the AFL decide to bankroll them again.

The Swans have a lack of space for a womens side in their present facilities. Im not sure that GWS have the same issue with their newer facilities, and multiple home bases.

Base the mens out of blacktown & the womens out of Canberra? It's not completely without merit...Especially when they next talk to the feds about funding for womens sports.

I wouldn't be shocked if Sydney got a quiet word from the AFL that they'd 'prefer' GWS to get the team and decided it wasn't worth the fight.

Why not, they're bankrolling Melbourne and the Dogs' teams. And Brisbane's.

To a large degree, I imagine they'd be bankrolling all the teams. Even the big clubs wont throw money at it unless they think they'll get a return.

Possibly, but the bigger, better supported clubs are more likely to generate more income from a womens team than the smaller ones.

eg. Collingwood will probably get a better jumper sponsorship deal than the Dogs.

True, but I doubt it would be all that substantial.

Advertisers pay for viewers, and if Collingwood gets a similar number of supporters/viewers as the Dogs, the money received would be similar. I suppose there could be a bit of a premium so they can run secondary ads proclaiming how they're 'PROUD SPONSORS OF COLLINGWOOD womens team', but I doubt that would be all that much either.

So yes, more, but I'd imagine we're talking tens of thousands rather than the difference between 'AFL supported' and 'Club supported'.

The pools seem to confirm what we already knew about the strengths of the states. It'd be nice if there was some crossover to compare, but 4 matches in 5 days is a tough slog anyway (even if, as I assume, they're shortened games).
