Too many people bashing this because its change and no one likes change.

If most humans had it their way we would still be living in caves grunting at each other.

I'm interesting to see how it will pan out and think its a nice change to spice up the pre season. It might be shit, but it may turn out good.
If the AFL wants to have AFL X in summer then all the power to them.

However I don't want to see AFL players have their preseason disrupted and potentially get injured before the season proper.

I would have no problem with a comp with different players similar to Arena Football in America.

How is it any different to another pre season game?

So we should just wrap them in cotton wool unless its a normal game they are playing just because theres a risk they MIGHT get injured?

I'm not saying it's some amazing concept, I just think we are dismissing it too quick because its different.

Because they are essentially playing a different sport?

The point of preseason is to get in match practice in a real setting that scratchies cannot emulate. Yes they carry risk but it is a necessary risk in order to get up to speed.

What a farce of an idea. Pre-season is to let the kids run around and play to some structure with a few leaders out there, get used to the talent that's on the list and get a proper run for the older guys.

I think this will be pretty cool. I was wondering how it would work given they had been talking about 4 10 minute quarters....anyway, good thing that there will actually be a round robin and play off.

If it goes well (and I suspect it will), I reckon next year there will be a finals the following week with the top 2 from each group

It is almost a marvel how reactionary Australian football fans are

If they didnt have this, theyd have another full match in the JLT series. Match time is negligbly different,.

Feels weird having AFL at Allianz Stadium.

Still, I am not going to take a stand on this game until I see it. It also depends on how seriously clubs take it.
Is a little weird but actually quite clever putting it at the home of rugby in Sydney. Just the venue will draw attention.

I'd like to see Suncorp in Brisbane announced as a venue next year.

AAMI park in Melbourne also a good future potential venue.

Interesting.. would have preferred just a lighting premiership like the one from like around 20 years ago. I was against this but the more I think of it the more I am keen to see how it all works out! No doubt it will attract a few due to the curiosity effect (especially in Melbourne and Adelaide) the telling will come in the second and third season if it works! As usual the AFL media whores will try to hype the **** out of it so it will get peoples attention, but will it be a case of it's just not crick.. footy?

The AFL thinking it can pitch it overseas through lol good luck with that will be like pushing shit up hill!

Why not just play 9 a side (half the normal afl players) and have 13 (total 22) on the bench?

On a normal afl ground.

Be so much space i reckon thatd be great.

Or even just trial 15 a side instead of 18 with normal rules... see if that helps clear congestion.

This aflx feels weird.

Most AFL competitions overseas rely on rectangular fields already. the US (metrofooty) and Europe (eurofooty) are examples of this.
Yeah agreed. AFLX played on rectangular fields has the potential to significantly expand existing leagues overseas simply because alot more grounds are then potentially available to them

Sure but if a key player goes down with an ACL playing this silly game then they might as well just start the proper season sooner to end the farce of the draw.

Exactly my view too.

People will bash any change. Could be very good for the sport at the grassroots/suburbs level with people's commitment to sporting clubs seemingly waning through a variety of reasons. Might have significant impact on social involvement with football and provide an additional product to take to overseas expansion.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained - give it a crack for a couple of years and lets see.

Yep when we play metro (intraclub) games here in NY we play on a soccer field with ten a side.

Do all of the overseas leagues use the same set of rules for that or does it vary ... and if the former are they anything like what we know of the 'rules' for AFLX that have been revealed worked out so far?

Nah it’s regular AFL rules, just on a smaller ground with fewer players. We don’t actually have a set of goalposts on our metro ground so we just use the soccer goals (so no behinds unless rushed or hitting the post). We also have a rule that there needs to be at least one American player on each “line” (forward, middle, back).

Other teams probably have their own rules. The metro games are just for fitness more than anything.

Are we thinking Paris 2024 or LA 2028? Our single-digit gold medal hauls are getting a bit old!

Having a 10-point 40-metre line should pose an interesting tactical dilemma in both how teams attack and defend. With only seven-a-side and essentially an all-corridor field, I'd expect it to affect outcomes much greater than the 9-point 50-metre super goal (admittedly, a low bar). Perhaps there'd be value in taking it a step further with an NBA-style tramline on the boundary:

You're gonna encourage more "gnarly" trick shots for goal this way, which would fit in fairly seamlessly with the AFLX moniker.

Start proper AFL season in Feb.

Play each other twice. Home and away.

Increase bench numbers.

Increase squad numbers.

Decrease time of qtrs.

Time for the AFL to have a fair draw.

Won't happen but nice to dream.
