Watching the SANFLW v VFLW game at Alberton, VFLW are too good for them (SA can’t kick straight), that Victorian women’s football depth like I warned about for years is developing & really coming through now, a number of players in that side could/should be on AFLW lists.

In terms of SA very impressed with Cristina Leuzzi a 21 year-old small midfielder from WWT who reminds me a lot of Rachele Martin when she was at SANFLW level, is having a very good season. Could be worth a look at the higher level.

I was watching more for where Mel Anderson the half forward from South is at who trained with the Crows all last year & who I wanted the Crows to look at in last year’s draft, always reminds me of how clean a footballer she is when I see her play. Also good to keep tabs on Katelyn Rosenzweig to see if her very good SANFLW form she’s had for multiple years carries over, still think there’s an alternate timeline where the Crows don’t delist her as a teenager and she’s still playing as a strong marking key forward at AFLW level. Also as I said last draft time Kiana Lee from Norwood would also easily hold a spot in the Crows forward line.

Sidenote… yet another season I mention that Zoe Venning is still a very good footballer who should’ve got a chance at AFLW level for lots of teams around the league who needed inside mids - is still only 21.

SA won all the important stats, dominated clearances, inside 50's and way more frees but horrid in front of goal, VIC rebounded with more precision and generally cleaner on the counter.

Venning should be playing AFLW without a doubt and hope she gets drafted. Bates should have played years ago but they won't pick her now, gunna end up like Smith sadly. Moon probably would make a handy ruck/back up as well for a team needing some support.

Agree Leuzzi is a little ripper and she really stood up to the level.

VFLW has certainly improved, play this game 3-4 years ago and result would be rather one sided towards SA. Though mind you, we should have been closer this match without that diabolical kicking. But as they say, bad kicking is bad football.

2 year contract extension for Gould
Good future proofing, got to think they probably got a decent scare thinking she was nearly gone when the Bulldogs came knocking at the end of 2023. Given the squad makeup & being the only reliable forward 50 target she’s the most irreplaceable on the list.

Probably a good personal business decision to flirt with leaving given she’s probably only behind Marinoff, Hatchard and on par with Jones on the pay scale now.

On my scale I have her at about 7th in the 2nd Band. Rated on Leadership roles, Premierships, All Australians and Awards

I have her equal 4th highest paid now with Ponter, after Marinoff, Hatchard and Jones under this restructure.

I’ve been through it before but I’ll go through it again I believe the Crows like nearly all AFLW teams wouldn’t be keeping the now pretty outdated flat tier rates anymore.

These were the flat tier rates for 2024;
2 players in Tier 1 @ $109,760
6 players in Tier 2 @ $89,559
6 players in Tier 3 @ $76,091
16 players in Tier 4 @ $67,337
(Total of $2,290,812)

The Crows would be using sub-tiers though now, you can structure it however you want just as long as you meet the salary cap requirement & pay the required minimum-salary.

My rough estimate for 2025 with the restructured signings (in order of highest to lowest) are;

$110,000 - $120,000 = Marinoff, Hatchard
$90,000 - $100,000 = Jones, Gould, Ponter
$85,000 = S.Allan, Randall
$80,000 - $85,000 = Biddell
$75,000 - $80,000 = Prowse, J.Allan, N.Kelly, Newman, Charlton
$70,000 = Goodwin, Thompson, G.Kelly, Ewings
$67,337/minimum salary = Munyard, Martin, Mueller, Ballard, Tonon, Kustermann, Rasheed, McKee, Smith, Boileau, Tarlinton, Boyle-Carr, Cronin

Marinoff’s salary would’ve needed to be maxed out this upcoming season due to the taking away of the ambassador payment, Randall’s is the most complicated as given the coaching role she holds she could well have willingly dropped down to the $75,000-$80,000 category with Prowse and J.Allan jumping up to that $80,000 - $85,000 category.

In the future you can see Goodwin & Rasheed are the obvious candidates to jump significantly up as their career’s progress.

Those are the figures for 2025, and there's no such thing as sub-tiers. While the number of players can be shifted around (max of 3 in Tier 1), the $ values of each tier can't be manipulated.

Most clubs do just stick to the 2-6-6-16 structure, according to Riley Beveridge.

Also: Niamh Kelly must have a terrible agent if at the end of 2023, coming off an AA + Top 3 B&F season, she locked herself into a 4-year contract in the 9-15 range.

I think it’s totally fanciful to believe teams are keeping a simple flat “everybody gets the same in each tier” 2-6-6-16 payment structure.

This is a sports league not the old Soviet Union, you really believe that teams aren’t manipulating their tiers to free up more cash for the top players?

Of course according to the set AFLW guidelines they just have the flat tiers rates but teams would most likely be looking to get creative to spread out the funds to free up more for their higher rated players. As I read it I really doubt there is that strict a rule that players must be payed at the maximum in their tier, so they can manipulate the amount someone is getting to be still classified in a certain tier, just say as you mentioned Niamh Kelly is getting around $80,000; its more than tier 3 and probably ranks her in the top 8 or 9 players so they would class it as a tier 2 contract but she is still not earning near what they say the rate of a tier 2 contract is.

The AFL would not care if someone in tier 2 or 3 has a contract that is structured to mean they are getting under the maximum in that tier. They pay little attention to most things AFLW, they would only care that no team exceeds the Salary Cap, that no more than 16 are being paid minimum salary and that the AFLPA ticks of that no one has been paid under the minimum salary requirement.

One thing I’ll say is I doubt the AFLW player payment side of things will ever get audited, teams would’ve been looking for loopholes within this payment structure for many years now and that’s even before you get into the paid coaching roles, paid ambassador roles, paid administration roles and paid community outreach roles many players separately hold through employment within the club.

Randall (coaching), Sarah Allan (admin), Marinoff (ambassador) and Niamh Kelly (community/Crows in schools) are just some that hold separate employment within the club, believe Gould is in the admin team too. You can’t think those roles don’t play some part in where they end up on tier structures.

My understanding is that you can restructure how many players are in each tier as long as you end up under the overall salary cap, but the tiers themselves are a fixed wage (except for tier 1). There is some slight wriggle room in that you can contribute a small amount of extra payments for additional work, up to a maximum across the whole team, and I think there is also some kind of relocation fees that can be paid, but as far as salary payments for the playing side of things I'm pretty sure it's fixed according to your tier. I doubt the club would be looking to do any creative accounting for the sake of $5k or $10k extra/less here and there, and risk getting into shit over it.

There is talk about going to a simple salary cap model with a minimum base payment per player in place any time soon, particularly now that we have a national draft in place.

Brief article about our joint trial match combining forces with Brisbane against Sydney.

Ballard is the one I have really high hopes for as the player that will take her game to a new level, really hope she can put her knee worries behind her.

Done a bit of a turnaround in my opinion about her as a player, thought she was a very frustrating player prior to her ACL as she always just seemed 2nd to every contest but saw in a couple of matches last year especially the Freo semi-final when despite still obviously being hampered by the knee she showed there’s big scope for improvement in her game. Saw some training footage a couple of weeks ago and it’s very noticeable her build is completely different to when she first started.

Given the family it doesn’t surprise Rasheed is hard on herself, will want her game to get to places quickly, can be a great thing but given the system the Crows play you have to be prepared to bide your time as a young player especially without getting a lot of ball in hand.

Cronin playing after only 2-weeks in the country is certainly a choice to try to fast-track her, sounds like they played her down back which can be fraught with danger with the Irish converts, only Jen Dunne from Brisbane has been able to adapt in that role. Also very interesting they say she’s going to play for the Eagles in the SANFLW given they are undefeated and flying up the top of the ladder, I don’t know why they’d want a development player put into that side at the moment.

Had their last practice game as a combined team with some Lions players on the weekend at footy park, not much in the write up this week & doesn’t say much. Clarke saying he liked Goodwin in the midfield but are unlikely to play her there this season, Rasheed is working on some things & Boyle-Carr is gaining more confidence.

Boileau, Smith, Ballard, Cronin, Boyle-Carr, Rasheed, Goodwin and Tarlinton look again the ones that played… also someone who looks suspiciously like Polly Turner in the top row 4 from the left but I don’t know if that is her or just someone who looks a bit like her.

Pre-Season begins in 2 weeks.

I know Clarke is generally understated, but "India was really solid, she got an idea what she needed to work on... she will without doubt be better for the run" is not exactly effusive praise when it comes to our top draft pick, haha.

Still, I guess it's better than Harper's comments last trial match of "There were a couple of little things that Doc will talk to her about, she was a bit disappointed about some of the marking and tackling... so there are a few things she needs to work on"

And in a complete surprise to absolutely no-one, Gold Coast will be a major beneficiary of a new trade change to allow for future pick trading, on the eve of them having access to some serious talent through their academy:

  • As long as a ruck has nominated from both teams, umpires will throw the ball up/in, regardless of whether the ruck is in the area to contest it
  • Umpires will be stricter on "no genuine attempt" to dispose of the ball when tackled with no prior opportunity
  • Umpires will also be stricter on players who dive on or drag in the ball, and who do not immediately knock the ball clear when legally tackled

I don't understand the first one. Was this an issue, players nominating but then not being there? Was it a timewasting concern?

The other two will inevitably be applied inconsistently and frustratingly.

Awesome.

"We're going to be stricter on our confusing and completely-open-to-interpretation rule!".

The other two will umpired harshly for a month and then forgotten about except on rare occasions where they are plucked out of the air for maximum effect.
