According to Riley Beverage, Brooke Boileau is likely to seek a move to Carlton at the end of the season - now that’s just shit, one of the rare young players in the squad that is actually playing in the midfield and has room to grow in that role, also the fact that she was the club’s 1st round pick 2 years ago and has just started to show what she can do at the level makes it even more annoying given the club already lost McKinnon and Gore as 1st round picks in the last few years (although not going to do anything at their new clubs it still hurt the Crows).

I know she was handled pretty crappy as a 1st year player last season and given very limited opportunities and there were rumours at the time of her being drafted she was not totally enamoured with heading to the Crows despite having Hatchard as a close mentor but still has been given the opportunity this year to play every game this season and even if she was maybe slightly lucky to did make that AFLPA 22 under 22 side as well this week.

Also probably explains why she was crying on the bench last game when she thought she was more seriously injured and maybe thought it was her last as a Crow, would seriously be a big setback to lose her given the transition that needs to happen in the side.

Hopefully that's just a rumour and it doesn't pan out.

At least these days, if it does happen, draft picks actually have some value to us now. We might get something in return.

Probably a cash thing too, she wouldn't be earning much here as our money would be tied up.

There is still a tiered payment system in AFLW. Would Carlton really be paying her above the bottom tier? They're a pretty strong side.

In other loosely Crows-related news, I see Maisie Nankivell has ended up at Collingwood.

I reckon to get her to move, when shes entrenched in the side it would take more than the same sort of money.

Hopefully we are in the ear of Poppy Scholz and then offer Matilda Scholz a level 1 contract to extract her out of Alberton.

That sucks. She was one of the brightest lights in an otherwise disappointing season.

Fingers crossed we can extract something of value!
I’m more disappointed it’s another 1st round pick that’s been wasted than anything else.
The issues with developing midfielders aside I think as a player I had hoped her limitations with her movement/agility and disposal would improve but after this year I don’t think that’s going to get much better.

Maybe that comes across a little bit like sour grapes because she’s decided to leave the club but from watching her from SANFLW level as a junior to this year I do think she can only really play as the number 1 in and under distributor and with those limitations in her game she’s never going to be a top line midfielder. I do find it interesting Carlton’s the team she’s going to as with the stars in their midfield she really isn’t going to be getting many more opportunities than what she already had this year here.

Tell you what’s even more annoying than Boileau going to Carlton is Lauren Bella from the Suns also likely going there, would’ve liked to target her as number 1 ruck. Still only 25 and I believe she could still become the best ruck in the competition with her mobility and great hands.

Bella would’ve been part of my strategy on how you could try to revitalise this Crows team in this current player movement environment as the position the Crows now find themselves in I certainly believe it is becoming quite tough to bring in ready-made talent from elsewhere.

You of course can’t be totally delusional and think they can just get someone like Ellie McKenzie out from Richmond as just like in the AFL men’s comp it’s hard to get players over from Melbourne but I still think there’s opportunities if the club were actually proactive and smarter in the recruitment of players and would do something different instead of doing their usual playing happy families, overrating their own list, or just waiting for a scrapper to maybe ask to come to them and would look to instead target some talented players that are playing in some non-traditional football states (Queensland and NSW).

They really should start to target those from GWS or Gold Coast that are disillusioned with losing lots of games recently or look to get out in front of those that are young and down the bottom of the payment tier structure at Sydney or Brisbane.

Also you could see if you could try to sell them the benefits of playing in a football state both on-field and off-field and rather than being unknowns you show them there can be some minor perks relative to AFLW’s current place in this State’s sporting landscape.

Along with Bella these were the others I have been keeping a close eye on all season that I believe fill the needs/holes I see in the team (key forward target, stoppage winning mids, speed and defensive distribution):

Tarni Evans, 24 (GWS) - tall forward, would be my number one target, and have thought this all season, she is a just so gifted and has the talent to be an absolute star of this competition but is probably being held back by being at GWS. Can pretty much do anything; impossible goals, contested marking, burns off opponents at ground level.

Emily Pease, 23 (GWS) - defensive distributor, interesting player probably a real lesser name on my list but remember her from when she was drafted and really like her ability to be defensively minded but also get the ball out of defence, maintain the Crows desperately need a player that can run and distribute better from the backlines like she can.

Alyce Parker, 25 (GWS) - midfield bull, whilst not maybe the ideal fit with Marinoff and Hatchard in the team I still maybe ask the question like most clubs probably will and have, when she comes back from injury I suspect she will still be an absolute unstoppable force especially around stoppage where the Crows struggle. Would have to be a massive offer though.

Claudia Whitfort, 26 (GC) - Classy Midfielder, injury plagued lately but I am possibly her biggest fan, gives multiple efforts and finds the right spot to be around stoppage and is clean and tough, signed until 2027 but contracts aren’t worth much in AFLW and signed before the Suns fell off a cliff.

Cynthia Hamilton, 21 (Syd) - Speedy Half-Forward/Winger, might depend on her latest injury but she’s one I think is just a different sort of player with her energy, really quick leg speed, and ability to hit the scoreboard, also just seems to have the ability cause things to happen in the forward half. Offers something only Niamh Kelly probably does in the squad which is that agility and ball carrying at pace, again one that with Sydney paying big deals to others might be able to be tempted out.

Charlotte Mullins, 20 (Bris) - Speedy inside/outside midfielder; I’ve been a fan of Mullins since her debut without stats backing it up, as you could just see like with many Brisbane players she’s so athletically gifted & under their system she would eventually start to blossom and she has started too. This is the sort of player I think you look to attack to get out of Brisbane by offering a contract they wouldn’t be put on for years at Brisbane under their structure.

No doubt one of the big reasons that’s stopped the team going for a star from interstate has been the club trying to keep the team together & repaying the loyalty of Marinoff, Hatchard and Jones ect. for not going to Port but I think it’s time they should let it known to Hatchard, Jones and Ponter that they’ve been paying them top tier dollar for years now without consistent top output so it’s time you either step down a tier so they can get some new top talent in to improve the squad or you can go chase the dollar somewhere else.

After this season I have only; Marinoff, Biddell, Gould, Newman, Prowse, N.Kelly, Rasheed and Goodwin as the totally untradeable on the list currently with Jones on the edge depending on where they see her playing in the future.

Our team gameplan under Clarke was just not set up in a way to make use of Ponter and Jones, but because they are talented we have to overpay them in the tier structure.

Both should be rotating mid-forward and we should be creating loads of space for them inside 50 (when forward) to work their magic

Instead we rarely see Jones in the midfield (it's either forward or defense) and when either of them play forward, they were crowded and forced to compete in contests.

I'd keep both and look to employ a more modern gameplan. What we need is speed and ball use further up the ground (another wing to complement Kelly, and half backs) so we can actually slingshot the ball and create space and leads when we go forward

Ponter and Jones are also part of a larger group I feel did not come into this season in peak fitness. New coach needs to set a fitness standard and we need to work much harder on that aspect of the game. Our overall conditioning was not at a level acceptable for paid full-time athletes.

We also need to make a minimum of 5 list changes. None of this bare minimum crap. Rotate the depth and a couple of spots in the 22. Boileau (unfortunately), Thompson, Smith, Martin and Ballard should not be on the list next year and that's the minimum changes we should be looking to make. I could name another half dozen that we could consider replacing.

Agreed that it's time to start approaching our AFLW side with a more cutthroat attitude given that it's now a national draft and there are 17 other sides to compete with. In the past, we could use the allure of playing for a perennial premiership threat as a way of attracting talent (even if we didn't seem to do it all that often) but those days are most likely behind us.

I'd probably add S. Allan to your list there, even if she's been slightly down recently she's still very important and reasonably young (28th birthday yesterday). I'd also add Randall, but nobody's trading for her at her age, and she wouldn't be interested in leaving anyway, so it's irrelevant. Beyond that, agreed.

Nah I’m pretty much done with Ponter, her multiple lazy efforts she follows up her one really good effort with is just too frustrating now as you can’t cover it as much in what is probably a middle of the pack team now. The forward line looked horrible with her in it this season and better without her in it, moved like a sloth up forward all year, just clogged up space, and can’t get any separation from opponents anymore.

Only see her as a midfield option with the team now and to play more permanently in that role would require a remarkable change and improvement with her fitness, if you could use her to get one of those I mentioned in my previous post I’m definitely doing it.

The new coach no matter what gameplan they implement for where the group is currently situated is going to need players who are willing to put in hard yards and some hard graft and Ponter has picked and chose when to put effort in for multiple periods in recent seasons.

Arghhh, where to get started with this ‘big trade update’ article… of course as per usual the Crows are not linked with any player but apparently are interested in one of Gold Coast’s picks… woohoo 🥳.

Even if they were there on a pure volunteer basis the list management team wouldn’t even be earning their wage.

Also this would be a disaster;

“Adelaide defender Zoe Prowse is another still weighing up her future, tossing up whether to accept a one-year offer to stay at the club or explore interest from a number of sides including Essendon, Richmond, Geelong, Melbourne, Hawthorn and West Coast.”

More a shrug of the shoulders with this bit of news;

“Collingwood and Richmond are seen as the likeliest to prise defender Kiera Mueller out of Adelaide”.

Clubs unsurprisingly also after Suns midfielder Claudia Whitfort (who was one of my main targets) with GC after picks for their academy but of course the Crows aren’t among those registering interest 🙄

It is hard to imagine how any professional club could run a AFLW or even u-14 team less efficiently.
All have known since start of season that Clarke was finishing up or being finished and still no likelihood of replacement or anyone making moves not even Mr Bungle .
Zoe Prowse one of our most if most promising players looking at move why! ,because all she has is a 1 year obviously not a great $ contract waved at her .
Kierra Mueller the same another young player that can actually play.
And of course our youngest midfielder already asking for trade .
Obviously all our cap space gone into Marinoff ,Hatchard ,Ponter and Jones with the latter three turning up to first game in absolute poor shape and even at season end neither could move out of own shadow.
And all the projected possible moves suggested has us not chasing anyone .

Stacked

As I mentioned elsewhere, I'd only entertain a trade for Prowse if we can get something seriously good in return. If not, surely we would be prepared to push that up to a longer offer if that's all it takes to get her to sign.

As for Mueller, given the club clearly doesn't rate her, it might better for all parties to get a trade done. I don't understand why she fell out of favour, but it's not as though she's knocked the door down when she had been given chances.

Is Zoe Prowse still dating Caitlin Gould?

That could be a reason she is looking at leaving?

Relationship break ups.

Adelaide are set to trade in Grace Egan

Well in the words of Dennis Cometti… “hush my mouth, hush my mouth”.

Something very ironic though about finally making a move for an established player from an interstate club when the team is further away from a premiership than ever before.

Obviously a very solid player with the ability to be better than that and badly needed due to the teams woeful stoppage game… just like a few others in the team though needs to be used right by the new coach as her foot skills especially aren’t the best.

Kaiser Harper did say in an article this week that they’d identified they needed to bolster that midfield and get some decent distributors off half-back, so some faith slightly restored that someone working down there actually took a break from holding hands and singing kumbaya with each other for long enough to identify a couple of the issues in the team.
