Age at your peril, warns Harvey
By Nathan Schmook 8:01 PM Wed 08 July, 2009

FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey has sounded a warning to the AFL's older lists as the competition continues its push into the Gold Coast and western Sydney.

Harvey said Fremantle, which will debut its 10th player on Saturday night, had planned for the concessions set aside for the new franchises but others may be in some trouble.

Gold Coast, which will join the AFL in 2011, will receive nine first-round picks in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft and will be able to draft one uncontracted player from each club ahead of its first season.

"I wouldn’t like to be an old list going into the draft beyond next year," Harvey said from Fremantle Oval on Wednesday afternoon...

Harvey said forward Chris Mayne would play in the WAFL reserves this week after a long lay-off with stress fractures.

The coach added that Michael Johnson's recovery from ankle surgery over the next six weeks would determine whether he played again this season.

All the first round picks going to the new teams, so aging teams should beware... is that anything like trading away our first round picks (and sometimes 2nd and 3rd rounders too) in 2002, 2004, 2006 leaving us with precious few quality players in the 21-24 age bracket (that we haven't recruited as mature age draftees) and the oldest list in the comp and a bottom 4 finish in 2008?

Glad to see Harvs sees the value of going with youth and plans to stick to his guns this year... :thumbsu:

No I am not bitter.... :p

For the gold coast to have a slight chance to be viable they need the AFL to hand them a flag...which is what they are definetly trying to do. I honestly think GC and West Sydney will struggle big time off field. I think this will be the biggest mistake the AFL would ever make if they let another QLD and NSW team enter the comp.\

As for us...we are doing just fine ATM.

yep, but i think if we lost less than 5 games this year and next, we will get first dibs because of priority...ie David Swallow and then maybe Brandon Matera or Darling at 4. YES???

We'll win 8-9 games next season. No doubt about it.

I agree that the AFL is making a mistake with these new teams. What I don't understand is why they don't want a Tassie team then an NT team. Can you imagine an NT team made up of indigenous players from the communities with Kevin Sheedy coaching them.

It amazes me that every single person in the entire world who knows the first thing about football thinks that the Gold Coast and Western Sydney teams are a shit idea, whilst the likes of Vlad Demetriou and Adrian Anderson continue to believe it's anything but.

Hey, I think I may have just accidentally stumbled upon the answer. Go me!
