I love the early Resi Evil games a lot, but to be honest, I loved the direction the game play took with 4 and 5

Correct, no longer survival horror, simply action shooter with horror elements, but I love them no less.

If you are a fan of survival / action horror / thriller though, to you personally, I'd recommend buy / renting / borrowing a 360 simply for AW...IMO it's that good

I'll always remember the sheer brutality of Resident Evil 2. Start in the middle of a burning wreckage surrounded by zombies with 6 bullets. Plus at the end of the game you're not a walking death machine as opposed to 4 or 5.

But yeah already borrowed the XBox just got to work out if I want to buy the game for $55 or just rent it for a week. Probably buy it on the basis that I won't get enough hours per day to play it but depends if it's a short 3 hours game or I could rack 20 hours up or so which is what I was trying to glean from Ed_Gein.

I must admit I loved the start of # 2, being dropped straight into it, 3 zombies all in lose proximity and a shotgun in hand

I've just finished Ep 3 and each has taken me approx 1 and a half hours (if not a bit more)

It's 6 eps in total, so let's say 9 - 10 hours at a pinch

There is DLC coming in July and more planned later in the year

You get a download code for the July DLC ep when you buy the game

I know for a lot of people, storyline is everything, or at least a really important factor in playing games. For me, it never has been. I'm simplistic in my views towards games and more often than not, I simply enjoy what I deem to be good fun gameplay.

I'm sort of the same in a lot of ways, but every now and then i'll play a game where the story really interests me. In what could of happened, what did happen and all sorts of theories of what different sections of the game meant like Alan Wake. But your right, sometimes getting the basics right is much more important than a storyline IMO which Alan Wake does very, very well.

But let me say, the cinematics, the characters, the story, the setting, the atmosphere are all beyond top notch in my opinion.

It's something different. Whilst there is conventional weapons used to take the enemy out, the use of lights and light based weapons in the game is AMAZING.

The one point that I will make that I am hoping is not going to give anything away, is that I actually felt a sense of dread and terror and fear. Something I've never felt in a game before.

At one point wandering through the forrest, the already dim light got dimmer, the wind swept through with fog and dark swirls plaguing the area, with all sorts of creepy noises being made.

I actually felt compelled to sprint the character to the "safe zone" ahead that I could see, something that never is felt in a game for me, other than to avoid the hassle of dying and having to redo a part.

The atmosphere has me hooked, the story is amazing, I'm compelled to see what happens next, I feel feelings of dread which is foreign to me being bought up on a diet of horror films and being partially (almost completely) desensitised.

Yup, i reckon Alan Wake found a really good balance between all the aspects in the game. From the narration, to cut scenes and the likes. Nothing was really overdone in that sense whilst still being able to tell the story.

I definitely got quite anxious myself going through the forest at times with the swirling black wind.

Firstly, don't ever quote someone with spoiler text, was a mad rush to avert my eyes and delete :D.

Secondly can you let me know how long it would take to pass this game without rushing? Basically trying to work out if I should rent the game or buy it (Borrowing an XBox to play it so not a massive motivation to buy the game).

Haha, i thought i had mucked them up when i read your first line, but i'll have to keep that in mind when i go to quote something myself. :p

Ummmm, trying to think bro! I'm thinking it's probably around a 14-16 hour game without racing through everything. I did sidetrack a little on occasions in search of some of the collectables and i did watch the cinematics too.

Awesome. :thumbsu: I managed to sneak in 3 hours or so a day on it since i got it last Friday. I tried not to rush it too much. But it's very enjoyable!

I have done the same thing. I keep telling myself dont play for too long try to let the game last till next payday. i dont think thats going to happen as i think im just about done. Playing on nightmare will be a challenge and make the game last that little bit longer.

Only played this for a couple of hours but it's a lot better than Heavy Rain, ignoring gameplay:

It's genuinely fun and intriguing
It borrows from better movies
Better script
Better voice acting (Alan's voice is up there with N.Drake's)
Better at building tension and making things eerie and scary

Will see if I have the same opinion after I finish.

Playing this game but something about it is really putting me off it, I think its the game play because the torch light and same annoying enemies is really getting to me. Hope that it gets better and doesn't continue like this to the end, I'm starting to get sick of the ghost guys in the Forrest.

If you:

a) Play this game alone
b) Play this game late at night with the lights turned out
c) Play this game with headphones on

You will shit bricks.

I have to admit it gave me the clammy palms playing this game theres just something about it, it's not things jumping out at you but there's something else just cant put my finger on it.

Is this game Dead Space scary? I'm a pussy when it comes to horror. Dead Space was way to tense for me and I never ended up finishing it. I'm wondering whether I should bother with this game or not.

Not quite Dead Space scary well at least for me anyway i was able to finish Alan Wake as opposed to Dead Space. Alan Wake is more eerie than scary the sounds and surroundings just give it that feel. Nothing really jumps out of nowhere catching you off guard.

Has anyone played on nightmare difficulty yet and is it more eerie/scary than what it is on normal ?

6 Chapters.

And you've basically outlined what the game has been for me.

Well i just finished and i gotta say that it was one of the best stories in a game i have ever played, i was hooked from beginning to end, i very rarely watch all cutsceens but i didn't miss a thing in this baby. I thought the ghosts might get a bit monotonous torwards the end but it just didn't happen, and the ending can be discussed untill the cows come home lol Would recomend to anyone GET THIS GAME
