Statistically though, is not all there is to it. Often when Rutten's opponent is kept to a minimum, he (Rutten) has also received assistance (double teaming and another of our players cutting in front of him) or the supply to their forward line has been cut off. I am sure the umpires see all of that too.
And so do most other full backs - just because we are better at it people have a pre-conception that it happens for EVERY contest. Kinda of like the calls that we flood and flood and have no other game plan. All full backs get assistance no matter what their fans claim.
Don't quite know how you brought umpires into it - if you meant the AA selectors a case in point is one Robert Walls the other week on the couch. After the Brisbane game they were discussing Rutten v Brown - Walls was very dismissive of even contemplating that Rutten could be considered for a position in the AA team. While this discussion was occuring with Walls stating that he always gets help they had three contests on the screen where it was just a one on one between them and rutten winning each contest.
