Goodie has referred to his team as the 'Not Quite Saints' a few times and for good reason, his team includes some of our most suspended players such as Robbie 'Mad Dog' Muir, Tony Lockett and 'Big Carl' Ditterich. A side that looks incredibly intimidating on paper, Goodie has managed to draft 7 Team of the Century members and 7 St Kilda Hall of Fame members (Lawrence, Murray, Oswald, McNamara, Lockett, Ditterich, Griffiths). Ditterich, Locket and McNamara are AFL Hall of Famers along with Roy Cazaly who has legend status. Two Coleman Medallists bless the side in Lockett and Baker. There is one Brownlow Medallist in this side, Tony Lockett. Bob Murray (x1), Lance Oswald (x2), Keith Rosewarne (x1), Tony Lockett (x2), Roy Cazaly (x1), Carl Ditterich (x1) and Daryl Griffiths (x1) are the Best and Fairest winners that reside in this 22 with 7 players for 9 BnFs.

Most lines look quite strong with Lawrence, Murray and Blake in defence and Cazaly, Lockett and McNamara in the forward line, but I think most would agree the midfield looks a very tough match up. Rice, Muir and Armitage provide big bodies while Oswald and Griffiths were fantastic players, to top it off we have the aggressive Big Carl Ditterich in the ruck!

Along with half a dozen old champs, Goodie has included some current day players such as Jack Newnes, David Armitage, Jarryn Geary and Patrick McCartin which has shown to be a relatively different approach in comparison to other sides.

Defacto's Team

179cm - 81kg / 192cm - 95kg / 188cm - 85kg

talented high-flyer / brownlow medal winning chb / solid defensive role player

C: Jeff Moran / Glenn Elliott / Les Foote
179cm - 76kg / 183cm - 78kg / 182cm - 85kg
premiership wingman / gifted centerman / talented with supreme all round skills

HF: Gilbert McAdam / Nick Riewoldt / Adam Schneider

180cm - 76kg / 193cm - 96kg / 175cm - 79kg
smooth moving skilful flanker / gut running champion chf / accurate goalsneak

FF: Stephen Milne / Jason Heatley / Garry Sidebottom
176cm - 83kg / 189cm - 92kg / 193cm - 98kg
all round gun small forward / lead up gun goalkicker / powerful and well marking

R: Michael Gardiner / Allan Jeans / Alan Killigrew
199cm - 103kg / 180cm - 83kg / 168cm - 71kg
valuable grand final ruck / modest midfield-type / effective rover

I/C: Angus 'Horrie' Mason / Troy Schwarze / Brett Voss / Craig Callaghan
177cm - 80kg / 190cm - 92kg / 181cm - 83kg / 172cm - 78kg
utility with superb disposal / solid utility / courageous and strong marking / hard working

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another very good forward line. Schneider and Milne will be able to once again crumb off Riewoldt. Defacto has picked a solid backline as well. Barker, Roberts and Sierakowski along with Darryl Wakelin at full back, they will be difficult to score against. He’ll be hoping Michael Gardiner can take another match winning mark and goal again. The midfield is nothing special, but you don’t really need it when you have quality at both ends of the ground.

There has been 13 (Barker, Roberts, Elliott, Foote, Riewoldt, Mason) best and fairests won from this team and one Brownlow winner (Roberts)

UNCLE BARRELS' BARBARIANS

187cm 88kg / 180cm 81kg / 190cm 94kg
pacy & big bodied / sublimely skilled / superb-kicking utility

HF: Aaron HAMILL (c) / Barry HALL / Ian COOPER

Barrel's began this exercise targeting left footers and a workable team that could realistically line up next season, meaning many of his KPPs are of modern day height and those who weren't were made pockets or flankers. As Barrels delved into the draft he took a liking of players whose careers were cut short but showed the potential to be stars for our club and thus many of them reside on the best 22. There are 3 St Kilda premiership players in the side, Brian Mynott, Rodger Head, and Ian Cooper, who would've been a Norm Smith Medallist had it existed at the time. Barry Hall, Brendon Goddard, Zac Dawson and Neil Besanko have all played in Grand Finals too. Vic Barwick, Colin Watson, Aaron Hamill and Ian Stewart have all captained the club. Colin Watson and Harold Comte both won a Best and Fairest while Ian Stewart won two, Jack Davis three. Jack Davis represented Victoria a whopping 10 times, while Colin Watson represented them on 8 occasions. Stewart and Guy were the others selected on multiple occasions (Barwick, Comte and Cooper once).

The side is blessed with St Kilda leading goal kickers. Harold Moyes on 4 occasions, Jack McDonald on 2 occasions, Barry Hall twice, with Barwick, Flegg and Stephenson all once. Stewart is our team of the century center while in our Hall of Fae, Stewart is a legend and from Barrels' team is followed by Mynott, Davis and Watson.

The midfield looks incredibly strong with Ian Stewart (2 Brownlows and All Australian) and Colin Watson (1 Brownlow) in the guts. Brendon Goddard (All Australian) turned into an elite star in the latter part of our successful period while Barwick and Besanko were both good players.

The forward line also looks very strong with Hamill, Hall, Cooper, Stephenson, Flegg and Moyes all down there which shapes as a very dangerous forward line.

A2R's Superstars (Armitage2Riewoldt's Team)

FB: Harry Lever / Verdun Howell / Luke Penny
178cm - 76kg / 179cm - 80kg / 193cm - 94kg
grand final captain / brownlow medal winning full back / solid defender

HB: Shane Wakelin / Wels Eicke / Fred Phillips
191cm - 92kg / 177cm - 74kg / 183cm - 74kg
hard working back / early backline champion / pacey with all round skills

C: Xavier Clarke / Harold Bray / Heath Black
182cm - 78kg / 178cm - 76kg / 176cm - 82kg
quick and accurate / tenacious, quick and superbly skilled / long kicking wing

HF: Barry Breen / Darrel Baldock / Peter Bennett
191cm - 93kg / 179cm - 84kg / 183cm - 78kg

premiership hero / intelligent and magical player / 5 time saints leading goalkicker

FF: Stephen Theodore / George Young / Kevin Roberts
178cm - 78kg / 185cm - 86kg / 179cm - 76kg

goal kicking half forward and utility / dependable full forward / left footed forward

R: Jim Ross / Luke Ball / Joel Smith
185cm - 80kg / 184cm - 83kg / 185cm - 87kg

classy forward and ruck / tough inside tackler / talented young gun (before moving)

I/C: Bruce Phillips / Stephen Powell / Wayne Judson / James Gwilt
188cm - 83kg / 181cm - 87kg / 182cm - 81kg / 188cm - 96kg

successful full back / hard and tough midfielder / back pocket specialist / handy tall or small back
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Armitage2Riewoldt's draft has been quite a success, with some of the best players in St Kilda's history. They include Doc Baldock, Barry Breen, Verdun Howell, Harry Lever, Wels Eicke and more. Eicke, Lever, Howell, Roberts, Baldock, Breen, Judson, Theodore, Gwilt and Ball all played in a grand final.

Verdun Howell, Wels Eicke, Fred Phillips, Bruce Phillips, Harold Bray, Darrel Baldock, Luke Ball and Jim Ross are all Best and Fairest winners. This team also boasts some St Kilda leading goalkickers, with 4 of the starting 6 forwards, Breen, Baldock, Young and Bennett, all leading our goalkicking in such seasons, with Baldock and Young also being the two players in this side to make All Australian selection. Wels Eicke is selected in the AFL Hall of Fame while Verdun Howell, Harold Bray, Barry Breen, Wels Eicke and Bruce Phillips are St Kilda Hall of Famers. Verdun Howell, Darrel Baldock, Barry Breen and Jim Ross are named in St Kilda's team of the century.

Harry Lever was our first grand final while Darrel Baldock is our only premiership captain, Luke Ball was also once a captain of the club. Wels Eicke, Harold Bray and Barry Breen also captained our club.

The backline is a strong one with early stars in Harry Lever and Wels Eicke, joined by Verdun Howell, a brownlow medal winning full back (and the only brownlow winner in the side). The midfield has some neat kickers in Black and Clarke, while Luke Ball as a tough inside player is joined by Harold Bray (top 3 brownlow on 3 occasions) and Joel Smith with a 3 time best and fairest winning ruckman, but the midfield is probably the weakest line. The forward line however takes the cake, with grand final heroes Barry Breen and Darrel Baldock, while Bennett and Young lead our goalkicking on multiple occasions.

B: Jeff Dunne / William Cubbins (c) / Sean Dempster

I/C: Vic Cumberland
/ Billy Schmidt / Barney Carr / Harold Davies

182cm – 86kg / 170cm – 70kg / 175cm – 75kg / 179cm – 75kg
champion ruckman / advanced centerman / classy midfielder / silky and accurate half back
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12Chill targeted his midfield first to get a strong core group of players in the door, and he succeeded by drafting his two Brownlow Medallists in Robert Harvey (1997 and 1998) and Ross Smith (1967) and throwing them straight into the roving positions, and soon Leigh Montagna, a modern star and Andrew Thompson came through the doors, shaping 12Chill’s midfield as one of the toughest early on. On the subject of highest achievements in Brownlows, Vic Cumberland took out a Magarey Medal.

The forward line looks strong with 3 leading goal kickers in Duperouzel, Davis and big Fraser Gehrig.

This team has serious final experience, despite our club playing in just 8 grand finals over the years, 10 of the 22 has played in one, they are; Sean Dempster, Leigh Montagna, Robert Harvey, Andrew Thompson, Ross Smith, Allan Davis, Rod Galt, George Morrissey, Vic Cumberland and Billy Schmidt. The latter three played in our first ever grand final and were all named in the best 3 while Allan Davis and Ross Smith are our premiership stars. 5 players captained our club, Bill Cubbins (6 years), Ross Smith (3 years), Robert Harvey (2 years), Bruce Duperouzel (2 years) and George Morrissey (1 year).

Jeff Dunne, Bill Cubbins, Andrew Thompson, Barney Carr, Jeff Sarau, Robert Harvey and Ross Smith have all taken out Best and Fairest awards. This team also boasts many players with All Australian selections including Sean Dempster, David Grant, Leigh Montagna, Bruce Duperouzel, John McIntosh, Fraser Gehrig and Robert Harvey. Most of the teams in this competition have excelled at one particular category that stands out among the rest and for the Chargers, its state representatives, a huge 15 out of the 22 players represented there state. Jeff Dunne, Val Perovic, Robert Elphinstone, George Morrissey and Harold Davies all did it once. Jeff Sarau twice. Robert Harvey, Barney Carr, Vic Cumberland and Allan Davis represented their state 3 times. Ross Smith and Billy Schmidt did so on 4 occasions, while stars such as John McIntosh, Bruce Duperouzel and Bill Cubbins represented on 6 occasions, in total being a very illustrious list. Robert Harvey and Ross Smith are in our team of the century while Ross Smith (legend), Robert Harvey, Jeff Sarau and Bill Cubbins have all been inducted into our Hall of Fame (Vic Cumberland, Ross Smith and Robert Harvey for the AFL’s Hall of Fame too).

Each line looks very even with Dunne, Dempster, Cubbins, Grant and Elphinstone down back with some aggression supplied by Perovic. The midfield boasts Sarau, Harvey, Smith, Montagna and Thompson. The forward line looks pretty good as well with Gehrig, Davis, Duperouzel and supporting talls in McIntosh and Galt.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HBF has focused on having a strong forward line, with his first picks being used on a half forward and a full forward. He also picked young star Jacks, Billings and Steven. Kevin “Cowboy” Neale is the ruckman of the Predators, and will be influential in winning games. He’ll give the respectable midfield of Morrow, Steven and Burns first use. The reliable Max Hudghton is the full back and will take out the best forwards each game. He has a solid support with Ian Synman, the only Jew to play in an AFL premiership, Tim Pekin and Jamie Shanahan.

The Predators have 4 Trevor Barker medalists (Burns, Loewe, Mohr and Neale) who have won 6 between them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fighters have a very talented team. They have a solid backline with good players in Matthews, Drinan and Peckett. Cunningham, Hayes, Dal Santo and Garvin make up an all-star midfield. Everitt is a very good ruckman who will give the midfielders first use. The forward is also good, Kozi, Scott and Gleeson will give defender’s nightmares.

In the Fighters, their 8 best and fairest winners (Matthews, Drinan, Hayes, Trott, Gleeson, Everitt, Garvin and Walker) combined for 14 best and fairests. Brian Gleeson also won a Brownlow in 1957.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

saintkildaman drafted a quality side, with plenty of current and recently retired players. Half of his side have played a game since 2008! His backline includes Danny Frawley, who was the longest serving captain of St Kilda, the versatile Sam Fisher and Austinn Jones running off the half back flank. Two hard nuts in Baker and Burke lead the midfield brigade. The midfield is very strong with Nicky Winmar and Jason Gram on the wings. Players who had short careers at St Kilda such as Jesaulenko, Lappin and Hunt were obviously targeted. The trio in total played 135 games for the Saints and nearly 600 games for other clubs.

In this team there is 9 St Kilda best and fairests from 5 different players (Frawley, Fisher, Winmar, Burke, Baker) and no Brownlow Medallists.

The poll will finish in a week.

Big thanks to 12Chill for writing half the writeups!

The voting is closer than you may think

12 chill, great players all over the park got my vote, just ahead of Half Back Pocket's Predators, what a good hard side that is. Great effort by all involved & IMO all teams would have won a premiership or two. Great stuff guys it has been enjoyable watching you all working out who you needed in your teams. Thanks. :thumbsu:

It was fascinating watching the picks drop in this entertaining draft. Particularly thankful for the history lesson at a time when we are seeking to re-generate our list and reaffirm our identity, culture and what it means to be a Saints supporter, or indeed to play for our club.
Loved the pictures and the stories of past players lives and achievements. UncleBarrels and 12Chill completely nailed it, with the classiest research, superb narratives and gold-star presentation!
The "tough" teams were very persuasive, but I went where my heart was in the end, and I found I had the most emotional investment in the guys on Armitage2Riewoldt's team. I really wanted them to win.
Thanks to all of the posters and to TN25. :thumbsu:

Those who didn't vote for my team can expect a visit from my bad boy brigade...
Sorry to have to point it out to you, but Ditters, "Mad Dog" and Plugger are all good boys now, goodie23.
And the guys like Blakey and Bobby Murray never had a bad word to say about anyone.
Loved seeing Daryl Griffiths and Barry Lawrence get a game too, and watching Bobby dropkick out from full-back again was priceless.

Loved it when Ditterich unseen by the umpires put I think, Bob Keddie down in the '71 Grand Final. The original Mean Machine. :D

I remember his elbows were permanently "flared" in case any unsuspecting fool happened to get in his way.
