Wasn't Bell quoted this week saying he "doesn't want to be seen as easy to deal with"? Can't imagine any clubs doing him any favours in that case.
What a stupid thing to say - you might think it or say it within the confines of the FFC - but not the smartest thing to say for all and sundry to hear. What a jerk!

The Hill trade was about par value wise, but was a circus in terms of time to do the trade. If he put his ego aside and just got on with it, it would probably have been resolved in 3 or 4 days and given them plenty of time to go after other deals.

As many have said before, the fact we're reasonable to deal with probably plays heavily into why clubs trust us with pick swaps etc.

Give him a few games
At least Parto got a chance.

Why? Who's place does he take? He's just not good enough to play AFL, same as Partington.
There's no shame in not quite making it, but why force him into the side when he's clearly not up to it?

Thoughts on the above by anybody who knows about this years draft crop. Even with Rioli out I’m not certain small forward is an area of need and would prefer to see us have a crack at finding more midfield depth but this piqued my interest

IMO it's pretty clear from watching the WAFL that he's not up to AFL standard, too slow, not a great kick, nothing outstanding whatsoever.

I was a big fan of Matty Allen and really hoped he would have a big 2019 but it didn’t really happen. Came close to a debut midway through the season when we had some injury issues and he had some solid games for the Beagles.

His kicking was the area of the game that most disappointed me. He had an excellent kick particularly when shooting for goal to the point where I rated him one of the best kicks at the club but that fell away this year

I wouldn’t throw a tanty if he ended up on our rookie list, particularly if Achee finds a new home. Can’t see it happening though as I think it’s time to move him on after 4 years on the list

So reports coming through this morning that Martin is in fact going to get to Carlton for nothing in the PSD. When will gold coast stop shooting themselves in the foot? Always so incompetent at trade time yet the AFL still gifts them all sorts of compensation. That's four trade periods in a row they have royally butchered

They weren't unreasonable.

Carlton was offering a 700k deal and GCS said "give us 9 for Martin & 15" with some other swaps I think. That is a 6 place slide in the first round.

Carlton didn't want to use 9 cos of the Papley situation.

GC should draft him and get UFA compo next year IMO.

It's not unreasonable trade offer, sure. But now Calrton will get him for nothing. It's just another addition to the fold coast laughing stock

I think the writing was on the wall for Allen when Yeo was out injured and we replaced him with Smith

Agree that alot of GCS problems stem from poor decisions during trade period. Not sure if this is one of them. Biggest issue is why was his contract set up to end one year before FA. That is what baffles me.

Carlton was offering a suite of 2nd/3rd picks. GCS are stacked with draft picks for the next 2 years. They were right to hold Carlton to the last minute and request a better deal.

If you finish last and there is an OOC player, surely threat of drafting through PSD is one of the only leverage tools you have in a negotiation.

Anyway, I hope he gets to Carlton and eats up their salary cap.

GCS will free up some salary cap and lose an inconsistent player, and miss out on a couple of later rounds picks that they won't miss due to having access to Darwin. They have made far worse decisions than this.

If you want to dig your heels in over a trade do it with a contracted player

My understanding was that the offer from Carlton was Martin and 15 for 9 and a future 2nd. (Initial reporting didn’t have the future 2nd)

That’s not a great offer by any stretch but for a player that had made it clear wanted out and who had failed to develop anywhere even close to his potential you do that deal and salvage something at least

Instead he walks anyway and the suns get nothing

That was Gold Coast’s offer but Carlton walked away I believe

I have a different point of view. Obviously losing a player for nothing is not ideal. But Carlton's offer has very little value to the Suns.

Carlton were offering unders. Later round picks have zero value to Gold Coast as they have a strong draft hand for the next 3 years and can recruit players from Darwin outside the draft and have an exanded rookie list.

I would say Gold Coast needed to make a stand to send a message that they aren't pushovers anymore and Martin was the best player to do it with.

They lose a fringe player, free up space in their cap, still have the best draft hand in the league for the next 3 years all while letting every other club know that they aren't afraid to say no and walk away. What they lose is a couple of meaningless pics that they may not even use anyway.

"The Suns said they were unlikely to use the set of picks offered by the Blues with their hand strengthened due to the draft selections and access to academy graduates they received as a result of the AFL assistance package granted post-season."

I don't understand why it's a certainty that Martin goes to Carlton.

Why couldn't we have just done the same with Kelly - just picked him up via the PSD by making a similar announcement as Martin? I know we wanted to seal it all up and give him peace of mind etc, but I don't get why it's any different beyond Kelly's family situation.

There’s 12 clubs that could jump in and poach Kelly from us if we went that route.

There’s only two clubs that can pip Carlton to get Martin, and even then it’s looking a distinct possibility that one of them might. Either Gold Coast to force him to sit out a year if he doesn’t want to play for them, or Melbourne if they want a free (but also $700k) hit at a talented player.

The PSD isn’t really a legitimate threat these days even if you finish in the bottom four, it’s zero threat if you finish in the top six.

Carlton have 3rd pick in the PSD so only need Gold Coast and Melbourne to pass and he’s at Carlton

The AFL have near full control of the suns so you can bet they’re not going to like Gold Coast redrafting a player that has no intention of playing there. Can’t see them making that sort of statement

Melbourne would need to find $700k in their salary cap that they wouldn’t have budgeted for. Maybe a chance but seems unlikely

So Carlton it is

As for Kelly, Fremantle would have had first crack and would almost certainly have taken him

How the AFL will let Martin go for nothing though is what has me stumped since they have control of the Suns like you say. The only thing they gain is cap space but its too late to use that now anyway.
