Kelly was runner up in Geelong’s B&F two years in a row. He played 48 games in his first two AFL seasons and has only gotten better over time. Not sure how he could be a one hit wonder off that body of work.

Higgins and Laird were both solid in dud teams. Brayshaw was played out of position and struggled like most of his teammates. Edwards had another outstanding season regardless of whether he made AA.

Is the benchmark that he has to remain in the top 20 or so players in the comp for it to be worth the investment? We’re adding an elite goalkicking midfielder in his prime. Even if he dropped off a little next season he would still be filling a clear need, boosting our chances of winning another flag and freeing up the likes of Shuey and Yeo to do their best work. It’s a no-brainer for me

I think the benchmark is a premiership. Win one (or more... would definitely accept more) with TK and we 'win' the trade.

If we go years without then we might have traded away our future for no return.

Our list does look good to have a crack at it next year though. So that is exciting!

It's one of my favorite parts though. Considering how well we did in the 2017 draft it was hilarious how negative a lot of people were.

Around these parts winning trade week is almost as important as winning the flag, apparently.

If everything goes right (1 or 2 flags) this trade is even.
If anything goes wrong (1 or 2 injuries) this trade is TERRIBLE.

Mind you, fortune does favour the brave./

How can you equate a flag with a single trade. Surely any trade not matter how one sided is worth a flag?

A couple of those picks could turn out to be absolute jets in the future but that's not what we're here for. No good having 18 year old rakes in a premiership window that I am sure all of us want to prise as wide open as possible.

I just don't understand the wailing at giving up draft picks (none of them in the top 10, by the way) and no players for a proven player with no injury history, no form slumps and immediate impact in our greatest area of need.
They say picks 1 through 30 are highly sought after as they are part of this years bumper crop! After that they forecast the talent drop off dramatically. would have got longer service from the draft selections. Interesting to see how it all pans out. About 3-5 years time will tell.
Moved heaven and earth to get him and good luck. But I suspect there might be a bullet hole in the Eagle’s foot.

I don't see the issue with that trade? Geelong were going to demand the pick in the thirties regardless, so we upgraded our pick in the 50s. We could've just given them 33 and stuck with 57. But now we have 52.
A late backhand slap to Geelong who they late backhand slapped to Saint Kilda . The little Winner of this little backhand slapping is Essondon and minutely softens the big punch we recieved .

If we gave six draft picks, a gold plated kitchen sink plus Jack Darling's first born son for Tim Kelly and it resulted in a flag then it would still be worth it. Every trade becomes worthwhile if the player involved contributes to a premiership.

Trade you last 7 H/A games before the finals at home for an Optus GF?

I thought that it was the Hill brother's that he's had history with

Both have been rumoured, the Bennell rumours only just started this week I think. Hadn’t heard anything before. And he looked to be on at least friendly terms with Brad Hill after the Freo - Geel game over here this season. So who knows

14 and 24 could have been the next Nathan Fyfes but an 18 year old Nathan Fyfe isn't much good to us right now.

I have a feeling the reason that this deal was done so early in the trade period is that West coast need time to trade back into the draft . This is Just the first piece of the puzzle .

Trade back in with what?

I don't think we can trade our future 2nd and thats really the only pick worth anything we have left.

So a player?

Like who?

I guess you could say that after all which has happened during this massive shit fight, i'm also somewhat disappointed with the club

After the Vic wank fest, Fremantle sniffing around, Barrett and the complete Hypocrisy of trade radio, Geelongs inability to comprehend what out of contract means...

Vozzo had an opportunity to demonstrate our power, he had so many cards up his sleeve. Geelong were rattled and unprofessional.

In the end i feel Geelong got well and truly compensated. The VFL would be happy with how things have panned out. This annoys me.

Trade Radio is fapping over it and can't contain their excitement at what we've paid. Ugh.

I feel people are a little bit blinded with excitement that they can't see the bigger picture as to what we actually paid compared to what we COULD'VE paid.

I'll use Keyser as an example, given he's extremely old and sensible.

  • He thought 2 firsts + 33 was a reasonable deal.
  • 2 firsts + 24 was his limit i believe, paraphrasing i think he said he wouldn't be happy with it but he'd suck it up for a player of Kelly's calibre.
  • Now that 2 firsts + 24 + 33 has happened.... suddenly what? Everything is all good? He's happy? That pick we've just flushed was worthless?

People are throwing too much shade at picks in the 20-35 range to try and justify what was essentially a massive price we've paid.

Hate to say it, but i think we should fold and try again.

Picks 14,24 and our future first were our 3 biggest bargaining chips and I said I’d ideally like to use 2 of those plus 33. Felt that if we used all 3 of those I’d want something back

Well we’ve used all 3 plus we’ve traded out pick 33 for 52 and a future 3rd from Geelong. So rather than get something back we’ve conceded further ground although I’d suggest that moving from 33 to 52 this year for a future 3rd (mid to high 40’s at a guess) isn’t particularly significant

So yes we’ve gone further than I’d hoped and you could argue that because Kelly was uncontracted, definitely wanted out and had little or no intention of going to Fremantle we could have pushed Geelong harder.

Why then didn’t we?

The relief on Kelly’s face in that press conference was palpable. This deal has been in the works for a long time and I don’t think the club had any intention of dragging this out any longer than was absolutely necessary. In the end we’ve coughed up a little more with that late swap of picks when I wanted to get back a little something. It’s not a big change so I remain happy that we got our man whilst, as Simpson said just now, keeping our list together

Ultimately the mistake we made was not rookie listing Kelly three years ago and today we paid the price. It’s a fair deal, not a great deal in that we didn’t fist Geelong the way us supporters hoped, and we move on

This is the only other thing i've really got for here but it shows we as a club are supremely confident in the young talent already on our list.

Like the Gold Coast pick swap a couple years ago where everyone thought we got reamed as we were due to slide down the table and out future 1st now at Gold Coast would be in the top handful of picks - as someone in that thread posted, professional organisations back themselves.

I am confident this deal is a good one.

Might be a good draft still, Malcolm Rosas Jnr might be still available at our first pick.
