I think you're mistaken there mate. The genre you're thinking of is Indie.
Alternative may still sell heaps of cds (eg Jack Johnson) but his type of music is different (synonym to alternative) to that of a mainstream artist.
Basically what an Indie group/musician becomes when they join a bigger label for the extra cash
