Previous winners and their genres:

Kelly Clarkson - Pop/Pop Rock
Ruben Studdard - R&B/Gospel/Pop
Fantasia Barrino - R&B/Soul/Funk/Pop/Hip Hop/Soul/Gospel
Carrie Underwood - Country
Taylor Hicks - Blues/Country/Pop Rock
Jordin Sparks - R&B
David Cook - Alternative Rock
Kris Allen - Pop Rock/Alternative Rock
Lee Dewyze - Alternative Rock
Scott McCreery - Country

There hasn't been a lot of R&B winners lately but early on there were heaps of that style. Time for a straight out popstar or a true rocker, or maybe even a big voice that can sing ballads.

I'm all for the rockers but aside from some soft alternative rockers occasionally, it will never happen. Or maybe the heart of a rocker, like a Joplin throwback like Crystal Bowersox. I really appreciated the diversity that year.

TODN - what about James last year? A metal guy on AI? And he got heaps far. Who ever thought we would hear Iron Maiden and stuff like that on AI? I want to see a proper diverse genre win it this year. That girl from Colorado (?) that had a real hippy, country vibe going on in her audition, that Steve really seemed to like, I hope she goes far in this competition. And I hope they don't try and "pretty her up". Just let her be who she is. People like that sometimes.

For sure. I wanted James to win. That's why I am saying we need a true rocker to win, none of this soft arse Kris Allen stuff. James was refreshing. Was brilliant the whole show until the last couple of weeks before he went. Went off the boil. Still more consistently better than the winner.

I agree with you about James and he should have won IMHO. I am not sure a true rocker will ever win AI due to audience demographics though.

Has a hard rocker ever won any of the Idols in the world over the years?

The only one I'd consider to be true rock is Norweigan Kurt Nielsen.

I think it is often a case of audience demographics that goes against the hard rockers. What I mean is most likely the people who love metal & hard rock probably wouldn't watch idol that much to begin with. So the people who win it are often middle of the road performers who can garner the teeny bopper and mum vote.

I wish they'd do another series of Rockstar.

They should just talk INXS back into doing another series, not like they've found a lead singer yet.:p:o

But I generally agree, hard rockers, or even just anyone whose appearance looks like that genre, have less chance to win because of the average age of the audience, and also the saturation in US media of pop over what some may consider real music.

Decent start to the season, starting to get a bit sick of the auditions, I want Hollywood week.:)

Hollywood week starts next week so finally we are getting down to business. The highlight is always the groups. Bitch fights, snubs, tears, tantrums, and much much more.

Who could forget how last years winner Scotty found it hard to get into a group as nobody wanted him because he was so country uncool.

Didn't he kick someone else out of his group (or was part of a group kicking someone else out), because of some lame reason? I seem to remember it being some fat kid.

But yeah, Hollywood week is always good for drama lulz.

Yeah that was his group but Scotty was a latecomer to that group himself, and it was DJ bloke with the glasses that kicked the young overweight kid out. Scotty didn't stick up for him because he was a ring in himself.

some very strong voices this year which is good. The chick who faints and falls off the stage......now that was one way to make an impression. Stroke girl made it and so did the cheerleader.

Worst episode ever
x2.:thumbsd:

They spent 3/4 of the episode on the groups fighting, and only a small end piece on the actual performances.

Not liking where this seasons production is headed, looks more like an X-Factor like show where the focus is on the contestant's off stage rather then on it.

yeah I thought the see ya next week after all that build up was such an anti-climax. The worst thing is next week half the show will be just recapping what we saw this week rather than showing too many of the performances. When think of it they have shown very little of the contestants singing this year.

I'm aware of some early audition standouts that have been eliminated with zero fanfare. I read one fan who said that they will not watch until final 24 because there are too many weird eliminations and politics being played out. Might be sound advice.

The girl who fell off the stage is good, she can make the top 12 IMO.

Was glad the stroke girl got through too.

And yeah last night's episode was crap, I wanted to see performances, not people trying to find a group.

My God that cop pissed me off. Stupid bitch.

I was thinking sucked in to her when her only 2 group members(boy and chick that had the flu) left to join the other 2. From memory I don't think it even shown if she ended finding a group. A singer in a competition would also want to do a song that shows there strengths I can understand that but not willing to even think about changing your song when no one wants to sing it is just being a bitch.

P.S seems like the produces might need to have a word with everyone and tell them to drink and eat more and not be so nervous. I think I counted 4 people fainting(also in shows upcoming they advertised).

Group week sucks so much. Very hard for some voices to have to mesh in with others with a limited song list. How do you find a great individual voice by having them sing virtually unaccompanied in such a diverse group environment that relies so much on dynamics and harmonies?

Just seen the Asian guys apology to the cowboy on tonights ep and can't stop laughing.

Yes, that was hilarious. Still can't work out if it was half serious and half not.
