An Ill wind Bodes no good

i was very disappointed with Bodes kicking for goal the other day.

Bode - if you cannnot kick you cannot play. You cant afford to miss two sitters 15m out. He does not get the ball enough to muck up the ones he gets.

We cannot afford to have Bode, Sarge and the Birdman in the same forward line with their very ordinary goal kicking at critical times. Bad kicking has cost the AFC games before and will cost us again.

If you do not believe me rewind the tapes of past years.

The semi final against St Kilda is a case in point. Skippys muffed efforts from 30 metres out in the first quarter were crucial and stopped our early momentum. At home this was a critical mistake, because the crowd factor was taken out of the equation early.

We need to develop players who will kick goals more oftern than not and when the pressure is on. Hentshcell is one of those. Goody, and Roo and Macca (not last year as much), and Welshie all must be in the forward line at times because their conversion rate is far superior to the players i mentioned earlier.

Another small must step up and become capable of kicking 2-3 goals per game and kicking the critical goals off hands that win games. It could be Knights, Douglas in time, but Vince's long and accurate kicking at Norwood the other night indicated to me he could be the man by year's end.

Jessie Aish from left field may also be the answer in one or two years time. You heard it first from the bigman. Big call from the bigman, but i know a fair bit about the kid and that goal told me somthing about his ability at this level. Then again I could be wrong!! What ever the case we need a class small in the side.

Give Bodey some time to regain some rythem, he has missed alot of footy in the past few years.

He is usually pretty good in front of goals, granted his kicking has never been his strong point, but it takes time to regain some touch.

i dont share your confidence Blue Red and Gold, but I hope i am wrong.

You have a valid point about his time out of the game. He may have been trying too hard, but unfortuantley leopards do not often change their spots.

I know he's not the most popular bloke around here, but that's an exaggeration. He was more like 40-45m out in the Tony Hall pocket. I only remember one though, so there may be a worse one you're talking about.

He certainly was further out than 30 for both of his shots and the breeze was very swirly and tricky for kicking set shots.

So now we blame him for missing 2 chances but we completely disregard his ability to win the ball and keep the ball inside 50. How about a little credit to the lad who in one particular play was outnumbered 4 to 1 and still went in hard, got crunched and still won the footy. I guess that doesn't deserve any praise just a lot of ridiculing

Always drops the ball from head high so that his bad kicks are up and unders and the best he can do is a floater , but they do float further than Skippys efforts

when bode has it, they don't. really we criticise him because he reads the ball off hands and creates opportunities - that perhaps he could do better with.

It reminds me a little, back in the dark days, when we would get slaughtered on the melbourne suburban grounds. Liptak or tregenza would be crucified for terrible disposal, all day long, and I used to wonder why the guys around me weren't getting stuck into the real passengers that day - they guys who didn't get a sniff and were therefore out of sight, out of mind. the ability to read the play is probably the rarest trait in our game, and few guys really have it.

Bode is a little like that, so let's not forget that he creates opportunities, and that is better than not.

He's been out for a while, he'll come good with a bit of match fitness.

For a small bloke he is just average - now did you see Porps... now there's a pair of quick hands for you.

Don't you remember Welsh when he first started at the Crows? His kicking for goal was atrocious and now he's just about our most reliable kick in the forward line. Tredrea and Perrie are 2 others who were shocking kicks and are now reasonable. Straight kicking is partly mental, partly technical but I can't believe an AFL footballer can't improve if he wants to. Give him time, he's just come back.

I think Bode is going to be very important for us this season. I still think he is one of our best crumbings small forward if not our out right best, and contrary to others beliefs, I think he is still ahead of others mentioned in the minds of the coaching staff.

Who has genuinely passed him as a small crumber? Knights? Looks an onballer to me more than a crumbing forward, Skipworth isnt any better than him, and Vince and Douglas havent proven their up to it yet at all. His time may pass him by at seasons end but lets not pass over him prematurely to play unproven players who havent earned his spot just yet. Give him a go.

Bode needs to be given plenty of opportunities early on, hopefully get his confidence up and be a regular goal scorer, as well as creating others for the less mobile, taller players. Everyone recognises Bodes ability to get the pill, the other forwards should be getting into possition to receive it from him when he does.

Like I said, he is a real little goer but his kicking is ordinary. I think Bode has more to offer than Massie, Doughty, Skip but is behind Knights, VB and Porp.

Cro Magnum Welshy was 22-23 at this time. Bodey is like young Michael Doughty 26-27. If he can improve his kicking style I will jump for joy.

However his ball drop is too high and in windy conditions his kicking is a definite liablity.

How many games has poor kicking cost us in he past - with Sarge, the bird Flu on occasions and Bode in the forward half and throw in a Rhett Biglands it does not give you much confidence when they shoot for goal.

You just cannot afford to torch the ball when you have it. Unfortunately Bodey has that problem. I have already mentioned the Skipworth situaiton in an ealier post. Poor goalkicking will cost you the crucial games. People with poor technique let you down at these times as they often revert to old habits.

Stiffy can I buy real estate off of you. One shot had to be 15m straight in front. I may have had a bit of liscence with the other, but the commentators commented negatively on the sodas he missed. In the end he had four shots for goals and scored none.

Agree with all of this. Is an honest trier but lacks size, strength, pace and kicking skills to play at a consistently acceptable level for an AFL player. Serviceable 3rd string midfielder nothing more.

Bode and Massie are very similar. They both go hard at the ball,good team players, not great kicks, and lack pace. They are both worth keeping around ,but as depth players.
I actually think Skippy is better than both of them, but has similar traits.
All of them would be looking over there shoulders at the likes of Richard Douglas.

One act doesn't make a footballer. That was very good I agree but he didn't show that much in my view. He does deserve a bit more time though to get his touch back.

Knights, VB and Porplyzia were all much better perfromed.
