inspired by danni's thread on the main forum...what matches/events that you still get emotional (good and bad) over like when you watched it that day

Australian Loretta Harrop was well out in front for the whole race of the triathlon at the 2004 Olympics. She was in the lead group the whole time and one by one her competitors fell away and she was looking as strong as ever. As they entered the final leg, the run, Katherine Allen was way back in the field and she just started sprinting. She was too far back to be a threat, but she was overtaking people at a rate of knots, and with a couple of kms to go, she had put herself in a position where she might actually get a medal.

With a km to go Harrop was still way out in front. 2nd and 3rd were starting to tire badly, and Allen moved into 2nd place. Harrop was also starting to tire, but she looked like she had enough in the tank to finish fairly strongly. But Allen was just motoring and it was amazing how much ground she was making up.

Finally it looked like she might get close. I had been watching this thing for about 2 hours and I was starting to get nervous. I was praying for strength, squinting at the screen to see if the finish line was in Loretta's vision. Then there it was. It looked about 200 metres away, while the camera flicked back and there was Allen probably another two hundred metres behind. Harrop was struggling, the commentators were getting nervous. Allen was still a long way behind but she was still sprinting like she had just started the race. Harrop was almost there, almost there... and then Allen pipped her at the post (with about 10 metres to go) to claim GOLD for Austria.

It was later revealed that Allen had been a resident of Australia and could have represented Australia, but IIRC couldn't make the team and tried out for Austria instead.

If a replay of that came on the telly, I think I might give it a miss.

2005 Melbourne Cup
Aus vs Uruguay, 2005
2003 and 2004 GF
Leo Barry's mark in the 05' GF

All our grand finals.
2003 rugby World Cup - so many chances for us to win.
Game III 2000 SoO - the NSW premediatated try celebration still grinds my gears. That just shows zero respect to your opposition.
Kasper's glove in 2005 - if that had gone for 4 runs, the Ashes would have been ours (in hindsight it was probably good for cricket, but it still sucks).
1999 WC quarter final and semi final against South Africa.
Saville's disqualification in Sydney - heartbreaking.

There are probably many more where they come from.

I had met Katie Allen a few times through mutual friends - I only caught the tail end of the race and was absolutely rapt when I saw the "Katie Allen - AUT" making a charge at the finish line....I figured she must have been running for Australia! It took me about 5 minutes to realise what was going on! I was happy for Katie to do so well as she had always struggled behind the big names but I felt really sorry for Loretta....who showed no self-pity herself. An incredible display by Loretta during the race and an even more incredible display aftewards. I'd be happy to watch the race again just to see the joy Loretta got out of giving it everything.
