What happens if both Gaff and Lycett leave on big deals? Do we get 2 picks or are the amalgamated for 1 better pick?
Gaff is 100% band 1 Lycett maybe band 1 with a big enough offer. The way your travelling it would be picks 18 & 19. You will be trying to force a trade.

If you end up with 17, 18 & 19 you maybe able to package them for a better pick. 17 & 18 = 5 points wise.

Gold Coast pick 2 & the Carlton/GC compo picks would see the Gaff compo drop to anywhere between 19 to 24.

Is there a known formula to player trade compensation picks in relation to list compensation picks? IMO, the trade compensation pick should always take priority.

I doubt Lycett gets Band 1. And hopefully any bid for Gaff gets matched.

SJ, could you handle picking up a ready to go 23 year old midfielder in Kelly if Gaff pulls the pin?

Lets not kid ourselves. The AFL will not do the Eagles any favours ahead of looking after its basket case child The Suns or a big Vic club in Carlton.

I think both Lycett and Gaff will go. Lycett for a much longer contract than the Eagles will offer and Gaff to move back to Melbourne.

With all that cap space now available the club should match Gaff and force a trade.

End of round 1 for Lycett is ok.

Pick 23 for Gaff is simply untenable.

So what will clubs put up for Gaff if they need to trade for him.

And dont post he's a fa.

Norths 9 plus Pruess?

Essendon 8 plus Colyer?

Swans 11 plus 31 with late pick going back.

Dogs 5 plus Roughead

Melbourne dont have a first and cant trade next years. 33 plus a Don Tyson pick

Cats with cap space issues may rule them out. Kelly plus 2019 2nd.

Doubt we would trade for him. If you match our offer you likely keep him.

I think North have a similar mentality to the Dusty offer last year, offer a premium to avoid the need to trade. I'm sure this would be something made known to the player when making the offer.

However in your hypothetical, were we to trade, I doubt we would add anything to our first rounder, in the knowledge we'd hold the cards in relation to the size of the contract you'd be taking up and the compensation were you to not match.

But even if you match, Gaff can still say no and go into the PSD. Carlton would be more than happy to pay the salary....

Band 1 compo is after your 1st pick. So if WC finish runners up it will be pick 18. Will drop to 19 id GC get compo for Lynch.

Because that happens all the time especially with players with good relarions with their current club and playing group.

Gaff isnt a flog like Tippett

But if he wants to go home and has served you well for so long, then there is every chance that like Nick Stevens (PSD) or Luke Ball (Draft)...

That would work if there wasnt five clubs in Melbourne keen on him.

Gaff want to go to a successful club playing finals.

Thats not Carlton any time soon.
Gaff would lift our group of youngsters significantly.

But if he doesn't want CFC then he goes into main draft. CFC will not use pick #1 for Gaff. But STK, Dons, Norths, Hawks, Geelong, etc. (Dees have no first) may give him some options.

Matching is not without risk is all I am saying.

True but at the end of the day you'll be dealing with the club and offer Gaff accepts (if he leaves). I can only offer the scenario if it's my club.

Bad example. Someone correct me if i am wrong but he was dropped towards the end of 09 and played most games with around 50% game time? and he didnt move back home like the other 2. Plus while he clearly wasnt happy at the Saints they didnt want to come to the trade table

Correct. It was a messy situation between player and club. Not alot of good will in the process at all.

If we match a FA offer for gaff can the destination club just pull their offer knowing they wont get him for free ?

If a club pulled an offer that would then ward off any potential FAs in the future .

What happens then ? Gaff will stay or entertain offers from other clubs not as a free agent .
