Ankle surgery for Knobel

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace says injured ruckman Trent Knobel could undergo exploratory surgery on his ankle in the next 48 hours. The former Saint and Lion only managed three games in an injury ravaged 2006 season. "We’re not sure if there’s any floating pieces in his ankle or it’s just something that’s been aggravated over a period of time,” Wallace said. “They’ll go in and have a look, so we’ll know more after that being done. It’s disappointing though, because we picked him up as a player that would be able to play while we were waiting on our younger boys to take the step, but he’s had this residual ankle injury which looks likely to be very much ongoing.” Knobel isn’t Wallace’s only big man injury concern. He believes number one ruckman Troy Simmonds will also miss Friday night’s clash with Collingwood. “We haven’t trained yet. We’ll train this evening and on Thursday and we’ll give him every opportunity to come up. I still think he’ll be out for one more week. I’m hoping I’ll be proved wrong,” Wallace said. “With Trent Knobel and Troy Simmonds out it’s been very awkward. Probably our next line of call would be Ray Hall and he’s out too. It’s made life difficult for our guys around the middle of the ground but they just have to keep competing.” Wallace insists he won’t be tempted into starting Simmonds unless he’s fully fit. “He’s a player that’s really important for the future of our footy club. It’s a secondary injury that he’s had to an ankle that was operated on from his time at Melbourne, so you can’t afford to be risking anything that’s going to impact him long term. “I’ve never believed you can play blokes underdone anyway. He needs to be fully fit to come back.” Another of Richmond's long list of injured players, Nathan Brown is also doubtful to play Round 3. Brown is still suffering the effects of what Wallace has previously described as a “hot spot” on the leg which he broke in round 10 2005. “He will train later in the week but we’re not going to throw him out there if he’s got any residual pain at all.”

Looks like we are going into Fridays match without Simmo or Browny.

Gonna make it rather tough.....

Long term him for the year and give Graham a shot on the list. If not up to it then both get the ass at the end of the year and we chase a ready made recruit for backup to Simmo and draft 2 ruckmen at the end of the year. Enough of this give them forever crap if you can't at least show something now then see ya later..

Graham is no where near ready. He shouldn't be promoted, he's making improvements, but isnt up to it yet.

Just saying that we have got nothing to lose by promoting him. Put him in and if it is really needed he gets a run, if the season is shot to **** by round 9 may as well play the kid and see if he can show us something.

Agreed

As plough has pretty well intimated , Knobel was only ever a stop gap ... a stop gap that has run its course . Even if we have to resort to playing Polak more in the ruck than we would have liked then so be it . That can be an option instead of senior listing Graham if he is to underdone ... at least give another rookie a shot ...

Knobel is washed up , was before this latest set back

Cant argue with that but the season is not shot yet.

Not yet but unless we can pull off a couple of upsets I can see us being 0-9/1-8 by round 9 and well if it is that bad may as well tank like the others and play the kidsget them experience and then top up once more. 3 top 20 picks next year and hopefully get what we really need and that is another KP, Ruckman and Inside Mid. I know it is round 2 but our draw is not easy over the next 7 weeks and well like I said in the event the season is shot, tank.

Has been very unlucky. If we cant get a ready made ruckman next year then we shouldnt delist him. Still needed. Things arent looking good for him though is what I can tell from what Terry said. I think he would go to a fourth club if thrown into the pre-season draft.

Bringing Graham onto the list would be silly. He would learn nothing but how to accept being flattened if we played him. Better off to hold out with Pattison and Polak. Simmo will be back by round four so we will be able to have Pattison as back up and, dare I say it, Ray Hall if required (better option than Polak and Graham lets face facts).

Forget about graham, hes not up to it.

Give Ray Hall a run as backup ruckman. Yes thats how little i rate Graham. Ray Hall has been tried in every position on the field and he simply isnt good enough. Give him FT ruck duties for the rest of the season behind simmo and see if he offers us anything there. Admittedly he does have a great work ethic, who knows he may just be serviceable. We just want a reliable foil for simmo, if he cant do that he shouldnt be on the list.

Cam Wood would be pretty handy....

If we had drafted properly then we may not have been in this situation.

I still question why Graham is a rookie if he's no good. Should have been elevated instead of King.

He

is

way

too

underdone

He wouldnt even get a tap. Not even worth taking a punt and "throwing him in there". He is what we call a project player. Someone for Terry and his team to work on for a few seasons and see what comes. He's only on the rookie list so he's not taking up any space.

Amazed at the lack of rucks on Richmond's list.

Only two of note, and then even one of those is a ruck-forward.

Surely poor planning??

Even St. Kilda, with our totally crap rucks in 2006 had Blake, Ackland, Rix, Brooks and Koschitzke on the list who could all at least play there.

Knoble is hopeless anyway. His best game for us was the '04 Prelim when he had 25 hitouts and 0 disposals.

Surely drafting a mature-age ruckman at the end of 2006 from the VFL (i.e. Ben Hudson, Michael Rix serviceable type) would have been the way to go??

Good luck for season 2007 ... always have had a soft-spot for the Tigers ... hope you can string a few together.

Hall and Polak "can at least play there".

Koschitzke = Simmonds
Ackland = Knobel
Brooks = Pattison
Blake = Polak
Rix = Hall
?? = Graham

Simmonds, Knobel and Hall are all injured. Leaves us with Brooks and Blake - and a losing ruck division.

plan - a scheme, program, or method worked out beforehand for the accomplishment of an objective

call me when rfc finally understands what it is!

Agree that Kosi and Ackland can be likened to Simmonds and Kobel, but Rix is a genuine ruckman capable of 20 hitouts in a match, whereas Ray Hall has barely ever played in the ruck.

The Tigers need a Rix-type as backup.
