Reading that, one thing surprised me, the free kicks. Looking at both Matty Clarke and Tony Modra. They both played 118 games for the mighty AFC.

Doc in that period had 122 free kicks.
Godra only received 7 free kicks. SEVEN, in what seven seasons. That is one amazing stat, if correct.

That is incredible for a FF who had so much delivery focussed on him!

Analysing the stats further is interesting.

I only looked at guys who had played at least 100 games for the club (only 32 which suprised me!). Then focussing only on averages.

Some good signs of the approach at the footclub right there :)

Couple of other comments looking back over those stats:
I used to rate Liptak for his ability to read the ball off hands.. but gee his stats were damned good too. In the top 10 for both disposals and goals kicked at the club for players who played more than 100 games.
Perrie's stats show he's been possibly the 2nd best 'pure' forward we've had at the club (in terms of marks taken and goals kicked).
Brett Chalmers - least productive player to play more the 50 games for the club...

A few things I was shocked at.

- Just how much of the ball Klug had. Knew he had a big year but didnt realise he averaged over 20 touches a game

- Smart only had 47 marks for the year. Thought he had a lot more than that.

- How big Scottys start to the year was.

Keep in mind that the guy doesnt have free kick stats for 93-97, so the free kick stats are largely incomplete.

Great call. Forgot to mention that. My old man always reckoned he was the best CHF we ever had.

I've got the full stats:

Modra (1992-1998), 118 games, 108 frees for, 114 frees against

Less than 1 free per game. Considering the monstering he got from full backs each week, that's a fair effort to still kick 400-odd goals without much help from the men in white.

Thanks DT.

It's like getting a complete new set of pens for your pocket protector. :p

[Anorak]

I want to know what the umpires were on in Adelaide's first away game

I was there, so it's still etched deep in my memory somewhere. Our all Port Adelaide forward line delivering 10 goals 9 between them (even if Darren Smith did get a bit scared of a cross looking back pocket player for a while). Jim West showing so much that he became a mid-season recruiting target soon afterwards.

But look at the Brownlow votes:

3 votes - Neil Cordy - those 6 kicks must have been rippers.
2 votes - Romano Negri - for winning the hitouts over the great Gareth John 11-10, I guess.
1 vote - Tony McGuinness - 13 kicks, 2 handballs, 1 goal - one of his 3 least productive matches for the season.

Meanwhile, Hodges (9 marks, 6 goals), Darren Smith (24 touches, 9 grabs, 4 goals), Bones (29 touches), Dale Lewis (32 touches, 1 goal) made no impact in the umpires minds.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Jon Dorotich either donated a substantial amount to the umpies' end-of-season trip fund or has a tongue like a hurricane...

You can just hear the conversation in the umpire's rooms after the match:

Field umpire 1: "Alright, so Nathan Burke was good, let's give him three. Now what about the 2 votes?"

Field umpire 2: "How about that big bloke up forward for Carlton? You know, the one who came over here from that other state that's not ours?"

Boundary umpire Phil McCracken: "You mean Kernahan? Or Earl Spalding maybe?"

Field umpire 1: "Shut up pleb. What would you know about footy? Dorotich, that's the bloke. Give him the two votes."

Hmmm.. you've got me worried now, some of those are quite bizarre, I will have to double check them. The Dorotich one cannot be right, surely.

No... unfortunately there have been many many instances of ''odd'' votes.

What I find, and a friend mentioned this on Saturday, is that human nature will see a players effort in the last quarter and that will stick in their minds and the brilliant 1st half by sopmeone else is forgotten

How about Andrew McLeod being cost a Brownlow in 2001 was it?

37 Possesions - 0 votes.

I've checked what I've got here, and it does seem to be in order. But the anorak is on standby, as I've got to investigate a problem or two for 1991, so I'll check it out anyway.

What surprised me is that Scott Hodges averaged 3.8 Goals a Game for you guys.

Scotty was always on a hiding to nothing if he didn't produce to a standard similar to his SANFL exploits.

In 1990 he'd just come off a third consecutive Premiership, a Magarey Medal and a league record 153 goals - and was still only 23.

The resultant expectations were such that if he could boot a century and a half in the SANFL he should or would at least be able to boot half that with the likes of McDermott, Jarman and McGuinness delivering it to him - all in an era when the glamour full-forward was still king.

Unfortunately we all know that he was never able to consistently perform to this sort of standard due to injury, the widely acknowledged belief that his heart just wasnt in it and the fact that Cornes never seemed to know how to get the best out of him as Cahill could - although he did show plenty of tantalising glimpses along the way,

11 goals vs the Minor Premier in 1992, 8 goal bags against Richmond and the Bears, 6 goals on Danny Frawley in 1993, etc.

In the end he finished with 100 goals in 38 games - not too shabby all things considered, but given the huge expectations he was saddled with he's widely remembered as a complete failure which is far from being the case - much like that other much-maligned figure in Crows history, Robert Shaw.

Turns out in Dorotich's case, he kept Tony Lockett kickless in the second half, after he'd booted 6 goals in the first.

That explains it. A mate of mine suggested Doro must've been a spoiling machine that day, but given the size of Lockett and Loewe's games I discounted the possibility.
