It's a bit hard to really critique your taste when the majority of the bands you listen to are safe, mainstream rock bands.
Such as? Please name these "safe mainstream rock bands" you talk of?

Of course your cred does go out a bit when you regularly listen to Powderfinger.
News to me. Not sure why you think this?

Fairly sure you listed bands such as Led Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden etc as those you listen to.

Very obvious choices really.

And common knowledge is that you you  Powderfinger.

So you don't think Led Zeppelin were cutting edge for their time? You think they played "safe mainstream music" do you?
To quote myself because it really pinpoints what's going on here:

Over the last 40 years there has always been good music that is mainstream. If you're in any doubt feel free to explain how

Cream
Hendrix
Zeppelin
Metallica
Nirvana
RATM

were playing safe mainstream music when they hit it big. They didn't. They played new edgy music that was appreciated by a lot of people.

There are no bands like that at the moment. You're trying to argue that these bands are "safe". They are not safe, they just aren't new anymore. Again you show your pop mentality that music is only about the current.

And if there was anything that was truely edgy and new in the past decade it would get bigger followings. This concept that because crap artists can sell lots of records equates to truely good artists not being able to climb the top of the mainstream tree is flase economy.

To be honest a person with your mentality should be listening to pop music. I don't think you have any place professing superiority over other regarding music. Clearly you only have time for the current and can't acknowledge that some bands were fresh when they arrived on the scene. You're a fraud.

I'm not saying their music was safe - I'm saying your nomination as the greatest bands of the past 40 years is quite safe. I could have asked any NME editor about their favourite bands and they probably would have had a similar list.

If you are looking for mainstream bands (which you obviously are) that have produced quality albums over the past 10 years you can still look towards QOTSA, The Mars Volta, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, The Strokes, The White Stripes and Tool. All of which are equal to the bands you've posted.

However I'd still be happy to listen to Health, No Age, Battles, Japandroids, Maps & Atlases despite their limited commercial appeal, just as I'd rather listen to The Velvet Underground, King Crimson, Frank Zappa and Tom Waits over the bands you listed.

That's just wrong.

There has been a massive shift in the marketing of music over the past 40 years and record companies now completely own what is played on radio and will only sign artists capable of making them money, based on commercial appeal.

Slightly worried if I start listening to pop music I too may end up in the time warp.

listened to born to run the other way. was very impressed. not near my top ten but can see why people rate it highly.

never understood why Abbey Road get's such a high rating by everyone. it even tops the list on rateyourmusic....

I love the Beatles but this is probably my least favourite album from the post-Help era... Come Together and Here Comes The Sun and that's it for me....

So essentially you are saying you don't have a problem with my taste? Which one is it?

Err, no.

For a start:

Radiohead, NIN, and Tool are 90s bands. I'm clearly not bagging the 90s here, nor NIN or Tool

QOTSA - lacking. Not on same level
The Strokes - some pretty good stuff. Probably on the level of The Clash, but no Zeppelin.
White Stripes - hell no. Just no. I don't mind them but they aren't very good.

You're in la la land if you believe that. Are you saying that there's world class acts out there that aren't being signed? Are you saying today's Led Zeppelin or Sex Pistols, or Nirvana aren't being signed because they don't have the bland commercial sound?

let me give you a dose of reality:

Yes this does happen. no one has or is disputing that. But this does not stop good bands making it. If a band is good they get a live following. They get signed. The record releases a record. If it's good people have access to it.

Not everyone is a peanut and only wants to listen to the sort of rubbish KOL put out. There's people like you and me who hear it and buy it.

If a band is good enough to grab the rock genre by the scruff of the neck, record companies can't stop it.

Black Country Communion, Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, White Stripes, Dead Weather, Raconteurs, Radio Moscow, Them Crooked Vultures, Lublin, John Butler, Circa Survive, Alberta Cross

all very good bands with varying degress of commercial success.

they stand up to any era outside of the golden age of blues rock that was late 60's early 70's.

Listen to the girl's singing part. Recognise it? (answer below)

Here it is live:

Sounds like rock to me. And the vocal part in the recorded version? Those vocals are done by jack White.

your point?? it's a shit tune.
You've listed 3 of Jack White's bands. Obviously you rate him. Given your history of liking anything that the media tells you is good, or anything you think will give you credibility, I wonder if you had known Jack White was in that song if your opinion would have been different?

You've always been a massive try hard on BF. Well done. keep up the good work.

i didn't realise this meant i had to enjoy everything he's been involved in... especially tunes where he's a backing vocalist and you can barely recognise his voice. i'm not even a huge white stripes fans. they have their moments.

Given your history of liking anything that the media tells you is good, or anything you think will give you credibility,

what history is that??

aren't you supposed to be about 35ish?? my 11 year old nephew calls people try hard. and i will keep up the good work. thanks.

Have you listened to Consolers of the Lonely by the Raconteurs? The album that is. Listen to it, disregard that White is in the band. Is an underrated album.

London Calling overrated? Wtf? Is a riddiculously good album, one of the ones that I consistently go back to time and time again. The way The Clash evoled from a english punk band to one of the most musically diverse bands around is an amazing feat. They are living proof that bands won't always get called 'sellouts' if they change their style. As long as it's quality, people will still enjoy it and London Calling is The Clash's best album, by far.

And 2 good tracks on Pet Sounds? Lulz. Not my favourite album(Sgt. Peppers improved on it anyhow) but there are more than 2 good tracks. Hang onto Your Ego is one of my favourites.

On the popularity thing, yes quality music will often break through to the mainstream but there are too many examples of where it simply doesn't. The Beatles & The Beach Boys were already very popular before they went experimental. And you have to be careful in talking about music that was popular then, just because it is popular and still around now. Not always the case.

Agreed - Stunning album.

Carolina Drama is about as good a piece of songwriting as you'll ever hear.

I've been listening to this for nearly 30 years. It's good but not as
good as some make out.

Incidently, how did Jarvis Cocker not get pinged for this nifty bit of plagiarism?

As for Pet Sounds - unlike LC it doesn't play like a good album. I don't even know how this is top 100.

Doesn't play like a good album? Has a fantastic unique sound the whole way through.

This poll loses all credibilty by not including Tool's Aenima and/or Lateralus, they are better than at least half the albums listed.

OK Computer at no.10 behind Talking Heads "Remain in Light' WTF? Should be at least top 5.
