Not sure if anyone has updated their Anti-Virus recently but if you are considering any of the products out there make sure you stay well clear of Norton 360.

After several calls to their support desk located in India (have no problem with the people, just companies that do this kind of thing off-shore for a quick buck) they weren't able to solve the issues with their product.

Firstly the product made sure I couldn't go on the internet - thats internet security at its best.

Secondly the Auto-Protect kept on turning itself off.

They were able to resolve the first matter but not the next, so the product in end gave me no protection at all.

You might find no problems with the product but like me several are having the same issue, so before you buy it and walk out the store please think about the trouble it may cause, promptly do a 360 degree turn and put it back on the shelf.

For now I have lost it with the Symantec Norton products.

i don't know why people pay for antivirus when AVG does it for free. after 7 years with an isp i can tell you that nortons causes more problems than it's worth. if you are going to pay for a antivirus program mcaffee would be the better choice. but i'll be sticking with avg, it's kept me virus free for 7 plus years now

I agree with you MP, have had AVG free installed for 3 years now & anytime I have downloaded a virus it has done it's job for me.
As for Norton, would have to be classified as a virus itself. I had Norton installed a few years ago & caused nothing but trouble, yet the worst was to come when I was trying to remove it off my system.

I support the comments about AVG. Of course my router has a firewall and there's also Windows Defender. However I've developed a lot of faith in AVG it's a good product.

Another vote for avg. The guy who came & fixed my moms computer for her last year is also the same guy who did a lot of work for the Port Adelaide football club & their players in regards to computer work. He's recommended a couple of things - use avg (as it's free & does the job) & never buy a computer from A & R. (dodgy as hell apparently - use cheap parts etc)

I was using Norton when i first got my laptop/computer then my mate told me to use System suite (number 7) from V-com. Anyway i ended up removing that program & installed AVG & haven't looked back or had any problems since :thumbsu:

I heard norton came in last in the recent study of internet security programs

Meh, AVG Free is OK, but it depends on what you do. You will not get the best real-time protection. Nortons sucks. Pay $60 p/a for Kaspersky. That is all, just do it.

I have noticed evertime Nortons is updated or changed the Computer performs like crap.

UNINSTALL ALL NORTONS COMPONENTS - Sorry to yell, but Nortons seriously sucks, trust me. I work in IT, and the number of times that this has been the solution to a problem, as well possibly as spending yonks removing whatever it has missed... Use something else!!!

How much better is mcaffee.

That and AVG Free do not take control of your PC and screw everything else. Your choice.

But as I said, if you want real real-time protection, the 20-somethings that I work with and who are serious hackers all use Kaspersky... As do I...

I must say that once I removed Norton that was what I installed, see how it goes for the free month they offer.

Also thanks everyone for the advise on AVG, something to look at if Kaspersky doesn't work out. :thumbsu:

Ive downloaded Nortons 2008, and it seems to be running okay. Ive got 10yrs of protection from it, so unless it really fuks up it doesnt seem to bother me. McAfee i found was a pain because every 15min it wanted to update and then restart, even though it had just done it.

They could get AVG for free, or they could pay $65 a year or $100 for 2 years of NOD32.

Using AVG Free edition is like entering the bathurst 1000 with a Hillman Hunter because you got it for free. It might be the cheapest car on the track, you might even finish, but it wont compete.

There is no better product on the market than NOD32. Sign up to Virus Bulletin if you dont believe me.

Stay away from the Porno sites and youwill be staying away from a vast majority of viruses.

Just a non-virus related 'puter question. We got a new PC and connected to wireless cable broadband via router and modem. Can anyone explain to me why I'm constantly getting "local access only"? Is it likely to be a problem with the router, the modem, our puter or the isp?

It's annoying me that much that I'm contemplating returning to dial-up. I don't have 3 hours spare per day trying different things just to get the puter online. I usually restart the computer and try switching the router and modem on and off-all to no avail. Then a couple of hours later it magically appears online. WTF is going on??

If it was solely about internet access then I would only be 10% as stressed but it's access to email that's the real problem. I've been applying for jobs and need email access to check for responses etc.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Now I'm off to yet another job interview.

Portentous, this could be a number of things. The most likely cause would be in the router. Try logging onto the router (using its IP address in the doco) and make sure its WAN connection is setup properly - that is, in accordance with the ISP's instructions. Most routers have a "test" or diagnostic capability to check. In particular check the DNS settings.

While you're in the router check you have its addressing set up OK, and DHCP enabled (for your local devices). Then check the IP configuration of the PCs so that they are the same as the router

Can you get internet connection from a machine that is connected to your router directly via ethernet cable? If you can then your wireless config is the issue - post back and I can give you some other hints.

If the modem is a separate box, make sure this is configured correctly too. If they *are* separate boxes you might find there is a problem in that both are trying to act as a router/bridge (I had that in an early set up of mine - reconfig the modem fixed the problem). Some ISPs have specific settings needed in the modem and router

I shudder to suggest it but you might find the ISPs help desk is helpful, particularly if the modem/router came from them. They will have seen the problem before...

Is NOD, is good.

I've had PC CILLIN for the last 2 years and whilst its relatively effective its probably more hassle than its worth.

When my current subscription ends, i'll consider free AVG or maybe even NOD32 as recommended on here.

At the risk of being labelled a corporate lackey, I use Microsoft One Care on some of my machines and it seems to do a good job (much better rated in V2 guise than previously for V1). I mention it because it allows you to run on up to 3 machines for a single subscription fee of around $85 a year retail. It also includes a not-quite-useful backup capbility which is better than nothing if you don't already have one.

Thanks for the tips CP. I think it's actually a signal issue as our router is some distance from the puter. Some times it works OK and others it doesn't. Am looking at getting a bigger, stronger antenna for the 'puter to see if that helps the situation.

It's awesome to be able to see pics within seconds instead of minutes though!

I just struggle to get on here now as the kids are always on itunes or watching vids.

Portentous, also check to see if your router and/or your wireless adapter/card have a variable signal strength setting. You *may* find that bumping up the power on one or both can make a difference. Another option would be to use a USB doungle adapter on the puter and stick it up on a shelf to help the signal
