You don't know how much of your life you will lose until you actually finish the CA program. Finished that bad boy in March - don't know what to do with myself these days (went about 2 years without looking at the tv between 6-8 o'clock - starting watching tv again and noticed that it was all crap).

Seriously though - you can do the weekend ****ups as long as you cover your study during the weeknights (such as doing 2 hours per night) and then doing some on Sunday to cover it. But, in the leadup to the exam (5 weeks out) - kiss that social life goodbye.

Yep, know exactly what you are saying. The CPA program has breaks of around 3 months between subjects, I find after a week or two, I'm actually looking forward to studying again, it just becomes so routine. I appreciate not having to sit and watch TV. I just don't have the tolerance to watch most of the crap.

Obviously it is straight into the CPA/CA once I (hopefully) finish my degree (I am at VU for those wondering about which uni, i ****ed around at HS, and didn't get a TER good enough for Monash or Melb to take me let alone look at (was 69), but yeah, VU is much better than impressions and expectations. I just have 3 hours travel each day which ruins motivation, but have gone every day of the last 1 and a bit semesters!). My dad was speaking to me about a friends son who is a qualified accountant and said that he dearly regrets not doing a CA course. Money is fine for him, and work, but just regrets it because it could be better. I guess if your willing to sacrifice 3-4 years studying at uni, another extensive period of studying won't dent you whilst in the mood. It is simple common sense once you have left the studying/schooling scene you will never return with a slight bit of motivation.

Anyway, Cassius and other first year students, sign up for the CA acheiver W/E?

Hey guys.
Few general questions about working in accounting.

1. What are your hours during normal period
2. What are your hours during "busy periods"
3. Do you work in industry or Public? (Big 4 or other)
4. What career level are you at?
5. What is your ball park salary?
6. What do you like about the job?
7. What dont you like about the job?
8. Anything else we should know?

Not sure about everyone else (as in if you get a grad position with a big 4 firm in Melb, Syd you will have way different hours) but for me who is 5 years into the profession.

1. Nine to five - sometimes there is some overtime but i don't get paid for it;
2. Whatever hours to get the job done - 7 til 9 and weekends;
3. Work in industry - finance department for a large credit union. Until June i worked in chartered accountant firm doing insolvency;
4. Qualified CA, in middle management now (i.e responsibility, good pay, room to go up). Higher up than i anticipated for my career level.
5. No comment - it is double and a bit the salary i got on my first grad position.
6. The freedom and having my own office (no one to look over my shoulder). Dealing with millions of dollars.
7. Sometimes can have slow periods
8. Capitalism rocks.
