do we have any?

At WCE Malthouse had Jakovich. At Port Williams reinvented Cornes. Do we have any takers of our own to build beyond an "era" building phase into a premiership?

Wakelin?
Walker?
Buckley?

Walker is and will be our go to man for the CHB role this year.
He will be groomed and by the time Wakes starts finalising his pension plan this kid will be cherry ripe.
A smokey for our defensive stocks this year might be one Tom Davidson who might need to play a straight running type position to give himself some confidence with his knee(s).

An attacking CHB is not essential. We have enough drive from the backline IMO with Clements precise long kicking, Johnson and Coles run as well as the likes of J.Cloke or Maxwell playing a bit loose.
I think an attacking defender is critical in any era of football ie Jakovich, Leppitsch, Cornes, Silvagni,Langford , Martyn/Archer.

We had Morwood, Christian, Turner

WC had Jakovich and McKenna on the HB line

Carlton - Sexton, McKay, Dean.

We desperately need an "offensive' HB line.
If its congested in the middle they bang it over the middle.

They need to not only spoil but their clearances need to be creative and rapid fire to maximise our forwards chances and avoid getting bogged down with that chip it around crap on the HF line.

A Roos styled quality rebounding CHB is vital as rebounding attack is generated in most instances by the CHB line.

Our back six was dysfunctional and not cohesive this year in comparison to '02, '03.

Clemmo is a quality HB but not a quality CHB. He's hasn't got to the Roo's level yet. He may well get there next year, but in the mean time he needs a Solomon and a Mc Phee on either side of him.

Maxwell may fill one spot.

And before I hear Johnno, he is not a backman. He is, and plays like a wannabee mid.
He is constantly caught too far from his man and regularly runs to the worst defensive position rather than the best in many plays. Lonie is the same.
Cole is developing nicely in the Back Pocket Kerrison type role.
Presti is still the one dimensional negator fullback, and Wakes is a pinch hitter at CHB but doesn't have the quality or versatility to establish the concrete slingshot.

Yes he can beat his man and play off him, but he tends to be a limpet backman in many instances rather than a dice roller.

If Walker is the answer, what the ******** was the question.

We don't have an attacking CHB.
My definition is someone like Pavlich, McPhee, McPharlan, Cornes or dare I say it Mal Michael.
We have no one that comes even close to these guys.

Yep, agree. Johnson and Cole have served their time; deserve out of defence and into being around the ball. Hopefully snaring C Morrison and McGrath (?) will help that release.

But with you I think we are a season or two short of an attacking CHB. That was the key move that won Port the flag this year.

Wakelin has pinch hit there at times. JCloke is a loose bomb - hit or miss; Walker, great if it happened but doesn't seem a natural yet there; is it a Buckley affair?; rob forward Tarrant to pay CHB paul?

Besides Hall, Walker, TCloke who are all in the making, it will probably still need to be Presti next year, who when fit is great at keeping us in the hunt (tip the hat to you), but may not be helping us next year to be the premier side to contain.

on reflection, isn't Jimmy Clement same size, speed and every bit as talented as Chad Cornes on a move to CHB, if given some muscle support by a free-er backman such as JCloke, Walker. He is a mighty and accurate kick. It may be robbing his current post to give us some drive from CHB. Do we have a third tall who can play tall/small and is poised under pressure to release Clement for attacking CHB? Maxwell was giving a good impression of it last season.

What do you think? Or should we stick to Presti's safety first approach and let the flankers to the attacking? 2 out of 3 attacking across half back ain't that bad, I guess.

I think people are missing a point with the arival of Chad Morrison to the club.

People say 'Well Chad can go to defence, and Johnno or Cole can move into the middle'. Now this is fair enough, but who replaces Johnno or Coley's run?? Not Chad.

Seems like we have a catch 22 here..

BTW - Brent Hall is your man, just you wait. ;)

Not as stupid as it sounds, but no thanks, we sacrifice too much creativity. He's too good on the lead, his number one asset would not be utilised at CHB. We dont need an attacking CHB as long as we have attacking tall HBF's like Clement, Lonie, and maybe even Rowe, who can mark and run and kick long. Even J Cloke is not beyond hope to fill this role, he can be a bit of a playmaker when in form. And Buckley, although I heard a rumour that he's getting old. Bizzell or Bruce would have been handy, but they were just pipe dreams.

We still hope Hall or Walker or T or C Cloke can make the grade at CHB as a traditional strong marking/spoling type, so there's a few options for the future.

Walker is underated.
He is a real dark horse as far as his development into a good player goes.
A few solid games to build his confidence and his long kicking can be a weapon which he showed for Willy. He has all the physical attributes he just needs to get the mental side of the game up to speed. All that is holding him back is his smarts and decision making.
