I know we don't know all the ins and puts behind the scenes, but it feels like we aren't being aggressive enough at the trade table. We clearly have cash to spend, and holes in our list, we need to seize the moment!
Thoughts?

We went after Cloke, Riewoldt, Taylor. So we have been fairly proactive, but havent been able to get the deal over the line.

I expect us to go after Frawley via FA next year very hard.

I am not sure who else we could have targeted, Franklin was too expensive although Tippett would have been great.

Seems to me we're being as aggressive as we can without compromising our list management, we just keep getting beaten at the post.

If you start thinking with the mindset of doing whatever it takes to land a big fish you end up back in the bad old days of Schabbolly.

We just played off in a GF despite half our stars missing big chunks of the season, our list management model must be working ok.

We also went in for Clark and Gumbleton, so its not as if we arent targeting players.

Agreed. But I think being successful in the draft is just as important. Being successful in trade period will set us up for 1-2 years, being successful in draft will set us up for much longer!

To take dawson's spot?

Jesse White? I know ??Collingwood?? are looking at him, but would fill a hole up forward and not really break the bank that badly.

Yeah we have money to spend, but alot of names out of contract at the end of 2014.. need to start securing those too!

IMHO much more important that we lock down Mundy, Fyfe, Griffin, MJ, Barlow, Walters and Ballas than we throw cash and picks at the names mentioned above. If we can get a couple of extra picks for Michie and Mello, plus use our current picks wisely, we should be in good shape for next year and the following couple, without trashing the joint by throwing all our spare cash at some outsider, a-la Brisbane under Crazy Vossy...

I'm confused isn't it a couple of weeks before we can actually of any trades anyway. Could the club just be keeping tight lipped on their plans until "bang" it's done. AKA Mitch Clarke being snatched last minute

So what does he(frawley)do for season 2014?

Frawley is a free agent at the end of 2014, so the plan I had was to sign him up then.

Him and Ben Reid are the two players I would target who are free agents next year, with maybe Montagna this year if the Saints were not asking for too much.

I would call there manager's now.

For sure,I thought he was a FA this year.

I'd rather inactivity than giving Jesse White a contract or having to compromise them playing list by offering Buddy 9 year contracts.

We have had a fair crack at players who will help us and aren't just going after anyone and everyone.

We're doing ok, the years in the past we have been aggressive have bitten us in the ass. I'm happy going under the radar and finding a guy like Pearce who fits out need at the time rather than just seeing a big name and going hell for leather.

Trust in Bond. He did an ok job under. The radar of getting us a decent coach.

Hopefully we are proactive on asking some serious questions when jetta & Mitchell come up for contract negotiations with the swans.Surely the swans are treading a fine line in player payments.

Let's hope we are at least looking at Dal Santo, Montagna and then Frawley or Reid next year.

Then maybe a Gumby or Mitch Thorp could help us out next year, with the hope that Howson, Taberner develop to replace pavlich when he retires in 2 years.

Read the title as are we being provocative enough, so I'll answer that.

No we're not being provocative enough, need to take a leaf out of the cowboys book

With our success with mature age recruits I think Mitch thorpe would be a great fit. 24 yrs has just coached south launceston 2 a flag in just two yrs coaching . Been kicking heaps of goals as a key forward.

I think we have a strong rulebook we play by and stick to. Means we won't always get the people we're after, but also means we won't get stiffed or compromise our ability to pay our existing stable of talent.

I'm all for our approach to date - got into a GF building a list effectively from scratch in 5 years. GC are tracking for top 8 in their 4th year, and hopefully higher in their 5th - so I think we did pretty well given our innovative approach and resources ;)

I think it's good that we have shown restraint at the trade table. It's a really important aspect of managing any organisation that you don't forsake your long term objective to overcome short term speed bumps. List Management has to have a balance of the now and the future, and it's no good exposing ourselves to cap pressure etc just to land a big name KPF. Just look at how passionate people are about keeping Fyfe, if you sell your soul on one player then it makes it much harder to keep gun players when time to re-negotiate. I reckon Bondy/Loydy have done a really good job with front and back loading contracts to manage the cap effectively and trust them to keep this up.

In terms of being proactive, I reckon we need to negotiate a higher draft pick than 16 if at all possible this year, and secure McCarthy. He is a WA boy, that oozes talent and x factor and could be the long term replacement for PAV that we need. I reckon he’s going to go at around 10-12 in the draft so unlikely that 16 will be enough to get the job done. The issue of course, is what are we prepared to give up for a higher draft pick….
