I honestly think with 1-2 more preseasons schofield could easily take the CHB role and be AA at it (i think you'll find i said he'd be a future AA CHB at the end of 2010 and everyone laughed at me.
I reckon it makes more sense to leave Mackenzie where he is and find someone else to slot straight into Glass's current role.

That would mean, if Schofield's the man, that he would likely play deeper, at FB, than at CHB, where Mackenzie is pretty settled.

The only issue is that key defenders are so hard to find, once Glass goes and we lose Brown, it will be extremely hard to get any sort of replacement. There simply are not many out there, and being able to secure one via trade or free agency would be near on impossible.
Why?

Are key defenders less likely to move as free agents than other players?

Suma, EF final v North is on Fox Footy ATM.

Was just watching it but had to head to work. I also caught the end of the Freo/north game a few days ago. North were a rabble last three games of the year, embarrassed by us and the dockers, struggled against GWS. And that was with a full team too.

On topic, my point is, if you replace someone in a team with someone else already in that team, then someone else needs to come into that team.

I don't think it makes that much sense to think of us as replacing Glass with Mackenzie.

I think it's more likely Mackenzie will stay at CHB, essentially in his current role, albeit with even more responsibility, leaving us to find a direct replacement for Glass at FB.

I think that is a more accurate characterisation of what would happen if, for example, Brown or Schofield were to take over from Glass.

I think so because clubs will be willing to pay them alot because there are so few and therefore they have a high replacement cost. The only good key defenders who will be better than Brown and be around for the same length of time at Frawley, Phil Davis, Talia and Ben Reid. No side has a couple of extra you can poach on the cheap and if you went for one of those guys you would have to pay huge money to entice them away which I dont think is ideal.

Could we turn one of our young key forwards into a key defender, in much the same way as Ashley McIntosh went from being a promising key forward to a star key defender ?

I legitimately think thank Emac is a better FB than CHB due to his skillset and while the positions aren't as defined these days i would have him playing on the closest big forward to the goals. As a CHB i legitimately think schofield can be better due to his skillset. Not only can he nullify the opposition but he can hurt them the other way. Something Emac could never do and something you would expect more out of a CHB than a FB.

Agree. Which is why we would have to find big $ to keep Browny in the face of the offer St K will make for him for 2014.

Can't see McInnes at the back. Has Sinclair played back - he's big enough, also Colledge (Woosh "recruiters say he is physically ready to play"). Even if we can keep Browny we need cover for the big back men 2014 on.

Can't see McInnes in defence with his excellent reading of the play, long reach, big size and telescopic left foot?

unlike many who post on this board I would be very happy to be wrong but the one time I got to training this year, McInnes was training with the fwds. I don't see him as a defender in the same way as I don't see Browny as a fwd (IMO he always seems lost up front). It would be great to be wrong.

He seems to be targeting a big bodied midfielder role i.e. Kennedy from Swans if some reports are to be believed.

He's 191cm, bit short I know, but if Schofield went to CHB could he play on a third tall?

Where he trains tells us about intentions, nothing more. He's played forward and back in the past, he's young and yet to play a game in the AFL.

He started the season playing in defence, but seemed better suited up forward. I think he is a genuine utility tbh, perhaps in the Staker mould.

Got dropped mid year didn't he?

Appears more capable of bulking up than Staker going by the training pics. The idea of him playing in the middle is genuinely exciting, I really hope we try it.
