Are West Coast the worst team since Fitzroy 1996?

Why would we have taken Curtin over Reid?

Also, the rumoured amount is roughly 11% of the cap, not 15.

Tom Lynch has the highest salary in the AFL, relative to the salary cap. Did ok for Richmond, no?

As well as. You could have easily found a pick combo to get him as well as Reid.

Lynch was an established player. In his prime. And it wasnt for 10 years.

But yeah, Im sure WCE know what they are doing.

Umm, you know we tried to trade with about 3 clubs to get a pick for Curtin, right?

So apparently it wasn't very easy at all.

Lynch is on $1,400,000 in 2025 due to Richmond backending his contract until dusty retired
His average salary was $925,000 over 7 years

Yep we are shite at the moment, no doubt. We have had these patches in the past although this one has gone longer than we would have liked. But am so glad I support WC and not the likes of Essendon, Carlton, Adelaide, Freo and Port. Blues and Carlton two of the most successful VFL clubs and the other 3 from powerful AFL states that have done nothing – just bouncing between 5 th and 14th on the ladder sometimes looking like they will make a run then crashing back to earth to disappoint the supporters and never seriously threatening for a flag. To have not seen a flag for over 22 years would be a hard slog as a supporter. At least we have had a number of good times since our inception. I have no issue riding out this low period because I know the club will win a flag again before most of the teams mentioned above. The best balance sheet in the comp and still getting 44000 supporters isn’t too bad for a team worse than Fitzroy…
Yeah we have been pretty spoilt, 4 flags in less than 40 years, our longest drought only 12 years. We can only imagine a 20+ year drought. But I'm also not taking for granted this pattern will continue. In 95 and 2000 I'm not sure Carlton and Essendon supporters didn't think they'd experience 30 and 25 (and counting) year droughts. But we're the biggest side in an AFL state, surely the tide has to really turn sometime.

Weddle was the year prior, trading up to 18 and trading up to a top 10 pick are completely different.

Noone expects WCE to suddenly improve. Future picks would be worth far more for WCE. Teams manage it all the time but WCE couldnt.

Because the team is just bad. We saw how bad last year when thry screwed up literally every trade.

If we compare West Coast to the teams with (a) the lowest win record or (b) the lowest percentage in a single season, I think the West Coast 2025 side is not the worst since the Fitzroy 1996 side.

The West Coast 2025 side are currently on 1 win with a 63.6%

(a) The Fitzroy 1996 side had 1 win and a 49.5%. In the 28 years since, our 2013 Giants side was the only other side that had a 1 win season, but our % that year was 50.9% - slightly better than the 1996 Fitzroy side. Whilst 4 sides (1993 Sydney, 1981 Carlton, 1972 North, 1966 Fitzroy) all had 1 win seasons as well, they had a better % than the 1996 Fitzroy side. You have to go back to the 1964 Fitzroy side for the last winless season.

(b) The inaugural 2012 Giants side, even though we won 2 games that year, had an even lower % than the 1996 Fitzroy side - 46.2%. You have to go back to the 1955 St Kilda side to find a worse overall %.

Based just on the win loss record and percentage, our 2013 side had the worst season since the Fitzroy 1996 side. West Coast’s % have to decrease significantly (and lose all their remaining 5 games), to be worse than our Giants 2013 season.

GWS & Fitzroy get leave passes for their bad seasons. GWS was a brand new bunch of kids playing against men, no one expected them to do much. Fitzroy were folding with 3/4 of the side without contracts playing for themselves. Not a good environment to get the best out of themselves.

WC have the most money and support out of any club. There is no financial pressure yet they have cooked their list and rebuild so bad that they are in this thread. Not even their drug riddled team of 2000 era fell off the wagon as hard. It’s amazing and case studies could be done on this.

Mate I reckon there is more of an argument for a case study on why a club like freo, that’s been in the Comp so long, from one of the proudest football regions in the country has been so poor.

We Crows supporters became accustomed to playing finals most years. Our longest period out of the 8 had been 3 years, from 1994 to 1996. Now we've missed the 8 for 7 years running, and it feels like an eternity. So a club accustomed to finals can become a cellar-dweller with the wrong management and bad luck.

However, our longest-ever period out of the 8 has yielded a good crop of draft picks. You'd hope your list managers will draft well.

West Coast have just 1 win for the season and percentage of 63.9%

Fremantle 70 point loss
Melbourne at Marvel 40 point loss
Adelaide 60 point loss
Bulldogs 70 point loss
Sydney 30 point loss

Roughly 270 point losses in the next 5 games to go
their percentage could get down to 50%

This thread should be renamed "Killing Bambi with an Axe", its obvious we got dismantled as a competitive outfit after 2018. Injuries aren't subjective but talent is and we got it so wrong about 6 years ago with our drafting by selecting absolute "Vanilla" and in some cases outright talentless hacks. You couple this with no game plan and players who are clearly not fit enough let alone fast enough and you end up with a game like today that looked like men vs prepubescent school girls. The AFL MUST grant us a "Mercy" pick inside the top 10 or the competition runs the risk of being brought into disrepute by having a team so clearly out of its depth.
