I posted a thread in Question and answer and some idiot wrote something pointless and stupid. So trying my luck here.

I am really serious about applying for the reserves. The web page doesnt give you a whole heap of info.

Just wondering if anyone is in the reserves or know someone who is or has been to training camp could let me know what the reserve do exactly and what happens at training camp. Please help :)

Hey mate, Ive been in for about 3 years now and still love it. Id be more than happy to have a chat to you about it. PM me and ill help you out with any questions you have!

I've also develop an interest in the army reserves. I'm studying a law degree at the moment and I'd like to carve out a career in Defence or possibly DFAT. The Army Reserves seem like a great pathway into this sort of thing.

Any advice or general input would be great.

deeman12- I cant really comment from Legal side of things. But from my experiance that ive seen a few guys is transfering from Reserves (part time) to full time army can be a bit of a lenghty process. So if you know a career in the Army is definalty what you want to do perhaps signing up full time is best. Also not all Full time army possitions are available in a Reserve (part time) capacity. You will probably have to call Army recruiting on 131901 to see if Legal jobs are available as a reservist (and if so where the Units are as they may not have one near to where you live)

I did the reserves for a year or so. Glad I did it and enjoyed the experience, but it wasn't for me, especially once I found a full-time job. The month training course is nowhere near as intense as what the full-timers go through, but it's a good enough taste. I'd recommend it for anyone interested.

I know a few people who've gone into the army in a specialist role and they've said that doing reserves is pretty pointless from a career advantage perspective. If you're going in as a professional of some kind (like a legal weenie) then you'll be a specialist officer. Specialist officers only get the bare bones training because they're there to work in their field.

Reserve officers get general officer training, which is much more broad-based. It's all pretty redundant if you're going to be sitting behind a desk writing wills for people, and even if you did it you'd still have to do exactly the same training as any other specialist officer admittance.

OTOH I know a lot of guys who just did reserves for the extra cash while they were uni students. They loved it, but they pretty much all reckoned the reserve officer training was more effort than it was worth. It chews up pretty much all your uni holidays for two years, IIRC. They all just did the basic and stayed regular troopers (or whatever they call them).

I knew a guy at uni who did the Reserves thing and he loved it. He was going on to study Law (doing Arts before going on to a JD) and I can't remember whether he intended on going into the Army proper after uni or not.

But, yeah, he seemed to love his weekends away at the Reserves.

Ahh, that'd be me. Unfortunately I'm a little blinkered on the subject due to my years as a regular having to deal with lawyers and accountants playing soldier on the weekends. Reserve officers were the most useless, entitled w***ers I've ever met. But having said that, my experiences were many years ago now, mebbe things've changed . . . .

I guess even soldiers have to feel superior to someone. :)

Reminds me of a quote from Latham:

“All these attempts to glorify the troops, treating them like untouchables – is this what our Party is really about? I said to Laurie today, what sort of person seeks a job that involves killing other people?”

Hard to disagree with these sentiments, IMO (unless you are running for office, in which case it'd be wise to keep your trap shut).

Pogues.

Is it really hard to get into? My main concern is I suffered depression in the past (fine now, i study full time and work part time), but i was always under the impression I would be ineligible to join any defence force role.

Just like what the OP mentioned, it's a wonderful opportunity and experience. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure how it works in detail in relation to the application process.
