Now, this isn't purely a whinge thread where I plan to speak about people having a cry about Geelong being arrogant and so forth.

It's more about an observation and seeking other opinions about exactly what has happened in the media this week so far.

People speak of our arrogance but if I go and read the papers and read on AFL.com.au - all I notice is a fair bit of press from Hawthorn players (and past players, Dipper) who are coming out and saying things about how their team will go about beating the Cats.

Examples: Chance Bateman

Jarryd Roughead

Jarryd Roughead 2

I can't find the link to the Dipper one unfortunately.

Bu what I'm getting at, is a fair few Hawks people saying "lets go out and do this, do that, and we'll win."

Yet, the Cats remain calm stating "We'll go out and play footy and may the best team win."

Who's arrogant?

Hawks are simply trying to replicate that attitude we had when we were at our best. We talked it up in the 80s at it worked, might as well try it again.

The thing I take most about it is that you don't see anyone from Geelong doing that. There's a quiet confidence about the way the boys go about doing those sort of things and reading those comments will on spur them on. Bring on the comments from the Hawks, past and present. The more people falling down on their swords the better!

Shades of Port last year, although to be frank Hawthorn are much better than Port were.

I do like the fact that we're not getting sucked in by it though. Just quietly doing our thing...

I do think the media likes the idea of the challenger better than the incumbent though.

difference is that Hawks were the best then, yet to be proven now. I suspect still a year or two away..

Actions speak louder than words.

By 5pm on Sat we'll know who's actions spoke louder.

Obviously I'm biased but I don't think Geelong supporters have been too over the top this year. Sure there are the odd few but all clubs have 'em.

One thing I will say, off the topic I know, I'm more nervy about this GF than last year's.

Hawthorn are a different kettle of fish than Port Adelaide were last year. Last year I was quietly confident Geelong would get the job done. This year the nerves are building (maybe that is because my brother is Hawthorn and I know a few Hawks supporters that'll give it to me if they win).

The Hawks should learn that talking tough before facing the cats doesnt work, which is why i suspect Clarkson is about the only one not doing much talking this week, where is Clarkson? is he still alive?

We have been no where near as arrogant as WCE supporters were when they won their recent flag. I can remember Gunnars continuous threads extolling the glory of their team. We have not been that bad at all.

Hawk supporters like fishbowl have been far more arrogant than us and they haven't even won anything yet. But it seems to have become trendy to call us arrogant without actually even knowing if we are or not. People are like sheep in that respect.

Well the thing is is that they're the underdogs in here so of course we're going to have to talk up our chances. They have to sound confident in the media otherwise it'll sound like we've already given up. They're not exactly going to come out and say Geelong is too good are they? All they've said at the press conferences is that you are beatable and that if we apply pressure like we did to the Dogs that we can beat you, that's confidence not arrogance.

And FWIW I don't think you guys have been arrogant, maybe some supporters but every team has them even Melbourne, and your team definitely hasn't shown it from what I've seen.

I think the talk of geelong 07-08 being one of the greatest teams ever just started a little early for most people. I think thats where the arrogance talk started. Win this year and they'll be right up there, but if they pull an Essendon and in 2009 finish 3 good years off with only 1 premiership they'll be seen as underachieving. It doesn't last forever and you have to make every year count. Hawks are about 3 years behind the cats in terms of list development etc. 3 years from now we should be where the cats are, and the pressure will be on us, but honestly if we snatch this one its really a bonus because we're running a little ahead of schedule.

But who started that? It wasn't the supporters, it was the media. This whole arrogance thing is a media-driven myth!

I think there's a difference between team (Clarkson, coaches, players of Hawthorn) and prior club personnel like Peter Knights, Dipper ect.

The portrayal of confidence or 'arrogance' has mainly been dipicted by ppl outside of the club, Jeff Kennett excluded!

This is the point. The whole reason and apparent justification for the word 'arrogance' being brought into the equation was for Geelong. Now no one in Geelong has done or said anything that could be construed as anything other than being ridiculously humble. Particularly given the position we're in.

On the other hand, as you pointed out, Hawthorn has Jeff.

Of course its a bit hard to not be called arrogant when you have the title We ARe Geelong the greatest team of ALl on your theme song inst it??? Maybe we should change it to the Oldest team of all??? Just a thought........

i remember every1 saying brisbane were arrogant back in there glory days, [aka mite had been] lol, any team that is the best,,,.. other teams and supporters try to bring em down., cats players r the shyest bunch of surfies in the whole comp, there is not one bigmouth in the team.well not to the media anyway.:D

Someone today said something about the tough not needing to talk tough. I think there's something in that.

Brisbane probably were a bit "arrogant" - but that's the wrong word. They were the best, they knew they were the best, and they made sure everyone else knew they were the best. That was just a reflection of their playing group (who always have been pretty media-friendly, probably because they've had to be up there). Our group is different, I struggle to think of anyone in the team who is a monty to go into the media. Ling and to a lesser esxtent Harley are good performers but I can't see them wanting a career there.

Very difficult to distinguish between arrogance and confidence at times.

For what it's worth, I certainly couldn't name any Geelong players (or hawks) who I would class as Arrogant.

Let's hope we get a decent grand final, whichever team wins!

I can recall a Dean Laidly talking up the Cats before round 21 clash and saying how good they are and how the Roos are the underdogs and be hard to beat the Cats and look what happened they got floged.
I dont wan the Hawks to go into this game thinking negative and thinking they have no chance i want them going into this game knowing they need to win and knowing they have a good chance of a win, if that is being cocky or arrogant then you are too soft and precious...

I don't think what you say before the game has any impact on the result, but it does impact on how you are seen afterwards. Port last year, for instance, talked it up big time before the game.
