Has there ever been a team with a lead look as downtrodden as this mob? The second Smith got his 100 they just went into survival mode...

It seems a trait by everyone who isn’t South Africa that they go way too defensive in the field too quickly when they tour here

Has there ever been a team with a lead look as downtrodden as this mob? The second Smith got his 100 they just went into survival mode...

And they were 4/368 just over 24 hours ago. Staggering.

Brendan Julian had the sweetest cover drive I've ever seen on any batsman. Down on one knee, magnificent style and loads of power. Just poetry to watch.

Shiv Chanderpaul for the Windies had an insane cover drive, he scored a century at Old Trafford circa 2006 against the poms that was one of the best knocks I've ever seen from a non-Australian.

Get the vibe that smith has knocked the stuffing out of them. They have seriously given up hope of getting him out

Having had to soak up 326 balls in his slowest ever century, Smith later said he was surprised at how defensive England captain Joe Root had set his fields and that he expected boundaries to be hard to come by further down the track.

All part of the plan, said Broad.

“Perfect. We know the Australians like to score quickly, if we can restrict them from scoring a lot of boundaries then we’ll have periods of taking wickets,” the wily paceman told reporters.

“The less balls we can bowl at Steve Smith, the more balls we can bowl to batsmen at the other end, and the better for us.”

”It must have been one of his slowest hundreds he’s scored for Australia.

Imagine coming out as a bowler with nearly 400 test wickets and saying this right after Smith scores a century on day 3 of 5 test series.

Ignorant criticism is frustrating. This thread and others have been full of people jeering at his Test average and expecting him to fail with the bat. Anyone with half an eye on the Shield this season would have known that he has been batting really well, and (more importantly) has gone a long way to rectifying the problems that caused him to struggle last time around. I doubt anyone who has actually been watching him play is that shocked by what we're seeing.

If people were worried about his selection because his bowling is pretty underdone and he hasn't had a lot of match practice since shoulder surgery, I would understand it - because that stuff's actually true. But most of the negativity is coming from people who clearly have NFI what they're talking about.

The exact same thing happened with Steve Smith when he came back into the side.

Mitch is batting well against a pedestrian attack on a road.

Kudos to him. But I'd want to see a bit more before saying he deserves his selection. Same goes for his bro

Shaun Marsh absolutely deserved selection.

Mitch nope, though he is a better player than he was but Shaun is easily in the best six batsmen in the country.

If he's a fourth pace option, he needs to be better than 0/43 off 9 overs.
I totally agree, and if people were criticising him on that basis I would have no problem with it. This is also something that is unsurprising to people who have watched the Shield - his shoulder injury and bowling load made it obvious his bowling would be underdone.

The Maxwell crap is a total distraction though. Marsh did not beat out Maxwell for a spot in the team; he beat out Moises Henriques. Few people would argue that was the wrong decision.

Whether the side needed a fourth paceman is a totally different discussion, and has little to do with Mitchell Marsh as a player.

Smith has now posted the highest score in Ashes matches by an Australian or Englishman. He has overtaken Ian Redpath's 171 in 1970-71. This was the first century at the WACA in all Tests. Smith's new record could potentially be the last, a nice sort of century bookend to the WACA's history.

If he's a fourth pace option, he needs to be better than 0/43 off 9 overs. Maxwell could bowl 0/43 off 9. He's doing well with the bat, and I'm happy to see him doing well. I still would have selected Maxwell before him though, and would hardly even consider their bowling.

why do so many people not understand the concept of an all rounder., you know it's been around a while. Traditionally australians have been less enourmred with the concept than other countries.

Judging an all round that they have got to perform with the bat and ball in every single innings is a absurd standard that don't work even for straight batman.

All rounders are a rubbery concept, what you lose in one department you get back the other , sort of occasionally. It's matter of the whole package , team balance, the conditions, the opposition.

Maxwell just isn't a useful bowler in most conditions. Mitch Marsh was the best available all rounder, not saying much the competition was not strong.

When you have 5 bowlers one is nearly always under used. Saying that he only bowled 9 overs therefore a bad selection Batting all rounders are preferred generally because of this.

Well why do people carry around spare tires. If you make a single trip and don't need it not a convincing argument that you should take it out the car as a waste of space.

2 best batters I ever saw were Rowe and Richards. The latter's pulls and drives were legendary, chewing gum all the while. The formers square hooks were often hit flat lined and viciously.

Chappelli was in hot form for a couple of years under Lawry's captaincy, he was not elegant but he was very aggressive and difficult to subdue.
