There is being critical, then there is being a dick
You are heading towards the latter in this thread.
To be fair a 7 for Bradman 17 was a joke. The game was garbage on release.

This appears to be much better though.

Am playing an Ashes test at the moment. Batted first and made 278 in 75 odd overs. Bancroft made 110 off about 230 balls. Lost 22 overs during the first day to rain. Love actually seeing cloudy conditions and the lights come on when its really dark. Bout time. I shit you not the crowd chant 'Nice Gary' and so does Matthew Wade.

If you get the game, use the new still cam. Theres a close one and a far one. I use the close one for both batting and bolwing. Its like an actual proper cricket on tv camera and makes the whole game look 1000 times better. Also, go into the physics modifiers and change the pace bowling min speed to 70 and max speed to 80. It makes the bowling look like actual real life speeds. Deliveries carry to the keeper no problems.

After grinding away for a few hours in my (earlier described) first go at bowling, managing to get a LBW not out decision over-turned via review is legitimately one of the most rewarding moments I have had playing a video game.

Wasn't even going to consider this after the disaster that was DBC17's launch but with the general positivity plus $54 price at ozgameshop I caved. Just have to put up with Joe Root on the cover :drunk:

Thoughts?
Pretty decent, Played out like a normal test match i think, Few of my wickets came from the non-striker not returning to his crease after a delivery had been bowled by a Quick but other than that it was just one giant grind for those wickets

Hoping for something abit more aggressive in the other formats

Like this change - except its a bit of a bummer seeing the speed gun at 195kph

Dhoni not shitting on a DBC game is a bigger endorsement than any IGN number/10

Game being decent can be largely attributed to big ant using free labor to test the beta versions of the game. They favoured amateurs over their own terrible quality control, which has worked out to be a good thing.

Played 50 overs batting of NSW vs South Africa. Good fun. Was struggling early with Warner, on about 15 off 35 balls, and then I finally got going. He was out caught JUST on the boundary for about 75 at a run a ball.

Ultimately made about 294 9 wickets down.

Some highlights:

- Lost Nick Maddinson first ball slashing at a wide one outside off and the ball flew to the second slip. Good fun.
- Batting is a LOT more 360. I wasn't trying to score around backwards point as I saw a point fielder but it turned out you really could angle the ball behind him for a single
- Related to that, I don't feel as stressed batting. In DBC 17 you'd change your shot direction by half a degree and the animation would completely change and maybe put your footwork at risk. Not so much here.
- Animations are SO much better. And some you can really tell were mocapped by Maxwell
- The players that were face scanned look exceptional. The others, like Ed Cowan for example in the NSW team, look pretty average, but that will be up to the community to improve. They are passable, but they kind of stand out.
- Bowling animations are also improved and there is some variety. There are no outrageous actions like a Malinga swing, but the different pace bowling actions have some nice subtle variation.
- Spin bowling doesn't have the ridiculous drift that it used to. It's definitely fun to bat against
- Had an LBW against me that should have been out according to hawkeye but wasn't given and wasn't challenged. I like little things like that
- Later I had an LBW against me given out. I challenged and it was umpires call, so it stayed out but I kept the challenge. Moments like this are real cricket
- The AI does less stupid taking off the bails at all opportunities, and less direct hits from runouts.

A few issues:

- Field placements continue to be an issue. There would be a third man directly behind slips or two deep covers about 10 metres from each other
- This is not so much a game issue but a cricket academy issue...I've just gone to start my bowling issue and Doug Bollinger is a right arm medium bowler... I think I'll pretend he got injured (hitting a big boundary on the last ball!) and use the others. It's a bit of a shame that all of the good work on the academy making teams and players for DBC 14 and 17 seems to have gone to waste. I also think that many people (myself included) who made stuff for those games won't be bothered re-doing it
- Sometimes batsmen take ages to cancel a run and go back. They basically stand still for a second. However the game perhaps is compensating for that as the fielder will be slow to react and not run you out...I suppose that's better than getting run out all the time but it's a bit unrealistic
- Another academy issue that did exist in DBC 17 but I thought was fixed is that the custom logos are very low res.
- Played at North Sydney oval and the ground was a full house yet still would only be like 5K. That's fair enough but the crowd sounded like it was a full MCG. I like the sound of cricket at a small ground with just a few people there...

Overall it was definitely an 8 or 9 out of 10 experience and definitely the best cricket game to date. Hopefully bowling is just as fun. Keep in mind that bowling improved from 14 to 17 in my opinion (whereas batting went downhill)

Does the speed changes effect spin bowling?

The sliders say it only impacts pace bowling and the game plays this way. Personally, i think it would be good if the spin bowling sped up a bit. Lyon consistently bowls in the mid 90kph range - rather than high 70s.

I have no idea because I havent tested it anywhere near enough - but my worry with changing the sliders was it actually changed the difficulty. I struggled to bowling England out for under 500 on my first go. It was a grind, but on the other hand it felt realistic and rewarding. I then changed the sliders for max pace etc as described in previous posts and England were 5-60 when I stopped last night.

This could easily have been because I had no real idea what I was doing when I first played the other day and quite possibly wasted the new ball as well as the conditions being more favourable now that it was Day 3 - or it could be that the difficulty went down when I adjusted the sliders to make the pace bowling appear realistic.

I hope it is the former.

What's the overall consensus on this? Never played any of the DB games but with the Ashes coming up, I'm craving cricket at the moment.
if you've played madden or nba2k this is gonna look like a ps2 or ps3 game.

I can't get over that so it's a miss for me.

edit- go look at the gameplay vids on YouTube

Mate I'm not a big ant fan at all after last times debacle but even I accept budget constraints play a massive part in this.

Haven't played mate. I'll pick it up at some point, just been watching this thread waiting to see if I should wait for a patch or not.

I'm a little bit the same. Watching some gameplay on youtube an it looks alright to me. Could probably see myself having some fun with it.

yeah i know the limitations of their budget- didnt know if Jatz was aware.

I dont get how they could get motion capture for decent batting animations but the bowling ones are still Brian Lara '05-esque?

The bowling animations have been improved this year. There is now some variation between the difference pace bowlers. I think that Hazlewood was either motion captured or they modelled closely on him because his front on action is in there.

I think that the bowling animations looked fine in the older DBC games, they were just limited.
