The other day diggler took a swing at Spud, asking whether the club should be reviewing his performance
I disagree with this!
I think the more pointed question should be asked of the club's administration.
It was reported earlier on this year that Spud had signed a new contract for 3 years that was performance based as opposed to the usual flat annual amount.
The intent of this contract is quite clear - the club is keen to reward success above mediocrity. At the time I thought this was quite a reasonable idea, but now I am not so sure.
I think all Tiger supporters are in agreement that we want to see the match committee taking more risks, play Rodan and Ednie in the middle, revamp the whole midfield, give the youth their head and find out where their enthusiasm takes us.
The upshot of this is what happened to Essendon in 1993, which we would all be excited about if it happened to us. The downside of this is that it could all end up as egg on our faces. There is a huge inherent risk in taking this tact.
You see, it is now no longer in Spud's personal interests to actually take these chances. Now, I believe his integrity to be of such a high standing that he won't exploit it but it may well end up with him being embittered.
This kind of contract may well work if the team is on a big upswing but becomes unworkable when uncontrollables such as crucial injuries hit.
I think that maybe the administration should be called to order for creating a situation where the coaches personal interest actually begin to diverge from that of the team and club.
