Assistant Coaches

Good gets by the Hawks but it probably means Hodge is going elsewhere. Hopefully we've at least had a chat and offered him something. He'll be in high demand from the media companies as well as clubs.

The re-signings of Buckley and Scott makes me think that there's actually not a lot of head coach material out there.

I hated him as a player but he impressed me when he was caretaker at the Crows and he would've further developed under Pyke, so Camporeale might be a good target for us.

Glass is also a pretty impressive guy, works for Boston consulting group in town
Darren Glass? Works for Hawthorn now.

You're both right - he's left the BCG gig to take the Hawthorn job. Would have thought that's a pretty sizable pay cut (BCG consultants take about $160k), if not now then certainly 10 years on when he'd be progressing up the ladder. That said, I guess it evens out if he backs himself in to become a senior coach.

Announced yesterday ffs.
Another Brad Hardie 'scoop'.
Dunno what salary he'd command but wouldn't surprise me if he didn't take a pay cut??

I doubt it's a pay cut.

Left field, but I often wondered if Crowley may coach. Showed super dedication on field and seemed quite smart.

He's currently coaching Guildford Grammar I believe, so he must have at least some interest in the job.

I wonder if we're replacing Stone?

I hope so, and I hope the reason they haven't announced who it is, is because they're involved in the AFL finals.

I had a quick look at the coaching structures at other clubs and I think we should consider what Richmond have done in appointing a "Midfield spread and ball movement" coach. It's clearly done wonders for their ball movement and I think with the list we have we'd could similarly benefit.

I completely agree that we need coaches that are more about game plan on the whole, than about defence, forward and midfield.

Caracella is very good at it too.

I like the idea of a kicking or disposal coach and also the football or game performance manager. Both could be handy for us.

My summary from below is that big names are overrated. Clarkson is a big fan of having assistant coaches with a teaching back ground. Stone has already left, I think Prior, Hale and Guerra will all be under threat.

I personally don't care what team you had played for, or how good a player it does not mean you will be a good coach.

I say we find at least 2 coaches from the WAFL who are good communicators (Ideally they have a teaching back ground) and then we can try to bring over someone like Solomon, or something like that.

Our setup vs Crows and Hawks
Senior coach: Ross Lyon
High performance manager – coaching: Tom Morris
Forwards: David Hale
Defence: Michael Prior
Midfield: Anthony Rock, Simon Eastaugh
Stoppages and training coordinator: Mark Stone
Senior development coach: Marc Webb
Development coaches: Brent Guerra, Roger Hayden

Ross Lyon empowered his assistants last pre-season but after the players won only four games and failed to adapt to a change in game style – with a focus on kicking skills and ball movement – the Dockers sought out a high performance manager for their coaching staff. Tom Morris, who hails from a rowing background, was installed in the new position in October and has been charged with educating and developing Ross Lyon's team to ensure they deliver the highest standard of coaching. Lyon also attended Harvard late last year to develop his own leadership skills. - Travis King

Senior coach: Don Pyke
Assistant coach (midfield): Scott Camporeale
Assistant coach (forward): David Teague
Assistant coach (defence): James Podsiadly
Assistant coach (ruck): Matthew Clarke
Development manager: Heath Younie
SANFL coach, midfield development coach: Ryan O'Keefe
Team defence specialist coach: Tate Kaesler
Defence development coach: Paul Thomas - SANFL Player\Teacher
Forwards development coach: Nathan van Berlo

Camporeale has all the qualities to be a senior coach. The former Carlton and Essendon midfielder did a great job as interim coach in 2015 following the death of Phil Walsh, guiding the Crows to a 7-4 record in his 11 games in charge. He's heading into his seventh season with the Crows after starting his coaching career at the Bombers in 2008. Forwards coach Teague had stints at West Coast (2011-13) and St Kilda (2014) before joining the Crows in 2015, Clarke is in his 10th season as the club's ruck coach, while Podsiadly is only 35 and made a great start to his coaching career last year looking after the defenders. After retiring at the end of last season, former captain Nathan van Berlo moves into a development coaching role. - Lee Gaskin

Senior coach: Alastair Clarkson
Head of coaching and development: Damian Carroll
Forwards: Adem Yze
Defence: Cameron Bruce
Midfield: Brett Ratten
Rucks: Damian Monkhorst (part-time)
Development coaches: Marco Bello (head), Max Bailey, Chris Newman (Box Hill)

Despite the loss of football general manager Chris Fagan to the Brisbane Lions as their new senior coach, the coaching staff at the Hawks remains fairly unchanged save for the return of popular 2013 premiership ruckman Max Bailey after two years working in development at Richmond and another spent teaching in Africa. Yze and Bruce were again given opportunities to coach the side during the JLT Series while Clarkson took off for a quick study tour at Harvard University. Clarkson sits clearly atop the tree here, but he delegates heavily, encourages his assistants to develop themselves and backs them in accordingly. Ratten is a vital and soothing figure at Hawthorn with the occasional need to play 'good cop' at times when things become a bit fraught. In Luke Hodge and Shaun Burgoyne, Clarkson is also fortunate to have two virtual on-field coaches as well. - Ashley Browne

You're all over this teaching as a background thing, and then want to get rid of Hale who has a teaching background. And want to add Soloman. What's made you think Soloman is a good coach?

Of the WAFL coaches, Scholfield is clearly the best and we've approached him in the past as I'm sure have other clubs but he's not been interested. Maybe as his kids get older he will? His oldest is 18.

The next best outside of Shepherd imo are Curley (he won't come back as long as Ross is there and vice versa), Harris and Monaghan and I don't see them adding much over who we've already got.

Solo man or Solomon I don't want :)

Interesting with West Coast waiting until after the finals to resign their coaches. Understand that Justin Longmuir is one of them to be decided, obviously with Sam Mitchell to come in.
Really want to go after JLo. He has matured a lot, retired early and has been in the coaching system for sometime. Someone we should go after tbh.

If we get JLo and Hodge this off-season as coaches I'd be more then happy. Would also love Robert Harvey or Scott Camporeale if we're going more proven coaches. I think Hodge would be amazing to teach Ryan, Hughes, Logue, Nyhuis etc. Would definitely add something.

Joel Corey at the bulldogs, should also be on the list. Hodge will have his pick of clubs, but JLo we should be chasing
hard.

I don't think I could bear to have to like Luke Hodge. An absolute thug.
