Quite frankly I am getting sick and tired of Collingwood being some sort of training ground for assistant coaches. I know Mick gets off on the fact so many assistants have moved onto senior jobs after being under him, but as a Collingwood supporter my only interest is Collingwood 1 Billion %.

Surely with no cap on football spending we can do better at holding onto assistants (or better still) employ from within that only have Collingwoods best interests at heart rather than using as a stepping stone to senior jobs at other clubs !

If clubs weren't interested in our assistants it would mean we were shit, all successfull clubs go through it, small price to pay.

It is a credit to the Collingwood Football Club that we have so many high quality people who seem to move on in high order senior positions.

Stop having a sook, having these types of people progress is the reason as to why we are the best.

To be a successful team you need to be a quality employer.

Success will feed on itself. For every Mark Neeld that gets a senior coaching gig, there will be three new Mark Neelds who will want to progress their careers at Collingwood.

If we were losing assistants to take other assistant roles at other clubs I'd be concerned. But most are taking promotions.

I was going to post something similar, but in reverse.

To spawn a bunch of club coaches could work okay for us come trade time. That's not to suggest that they'll be anyhitng other than ruthless in terms of their own interests, but they will possibly rate our players higher (Bluey: Fraser) or possibly not be as truculent to deal with.

The Jolly trade, for example, was made smoother by Perts relationship with Roos.

Thats the big thing I think. Partly because of who we were. And partly because of how people think of us. We still have poor trade relations with West Coast and we are a totally different club since then. This network of people can only be a positive.

Think Old Spice and the others have got it.

For trading can be useful because they understand the quality of players on our list and likely they all have their favourites. No coincidence that GC have: Stanley, Iles + Fraser. Don't be surprised to see a Brad Scott or Mark Neeld to look at trades for the Brent Macaffer's, Tyson Goldsack's, Jarryd Blair's or John McCarthy's among others. Also helps build up those networks between clubs to increase willingness to trade.

Then the other issue being if you don't have your assistant coaches getting a look, then perhaps they aren't the best assistant coaches or as a club you aren't doing a great job at developing these assistant coaches.
Mick has been great for the development of these assistants and they have benefitted from all the responsibility and opportunities Mick has given them and it is translating which is great to see! And only shows that we are doing things correctly.

Would obviously be great to have Neeld around for those final weeks. But not practical.
The club has it's systems in place to here's hoping it won't make a huge difference over the coming two weeks. Just means the other assistants - the likes of Buckley and others just need to step up and take on that extra responsibility.

All I can say is we are forever in Richmonds debt for taking Danny Frawley off our hands....... Thank u Tiges!!!:thumbsu:

how else do we infiltrate other clubs at a high level ?

and heres proof..........

how many times have gold coast beaten us since mckenna became coach ?
ZERO
how many times have north beaten us since brad scott became coach ?
ZERO
how many times have north beaten us since laidley became coach ?
FOUR

oh **** thats not good.

I think of it like this. Collingwood has produced several recent senior coaches, therefore any assistant coach would give their left nut to come over and get an apprentice with us. Thus as we lose one, we should be able to secure one of the best to replace them.

No.

Coaching is a passion. Offering more money won't entice people who want to become head coaches (or in the words of Mark Harvey, want head jobs) to stay.

And no.

Let's not go down the Collingwood only path. I'd much rather have the best people who will move on in the future, then having love Collingwood been a parameter for employment. That sort of boys only club doesn't work.

This is not a good suggestion.

1. If we only hired ex-Collingwood people, that would narrow our addressable pool of candidates right down, reducing our chances of getting the best candidate.

2. Any assistant coach will do their very best for Collingwood, whether they are from another club or within the club. To suggest that an ex-Collingwood person would try harder is ludicrous.

3. MM has said that he only wants assistant coaches who want to be senior coaches one day. All assistant coaches (whether from Collingwood or not) would have ambitions for a senior role, so losing assistants is just a fact of life.

This might be a record - 0% agreement rate on a post.

I've seen some dumb, dumb things posted on these boards (not least of which kreuze_missile's sook about taggers the other day) and there's usually at least one peanut who'll throw their hat in.

To get nobody on board with what you're saying is a truly special achievement, magpielicious. You should be proud.

Yep, gotta agree with everyone other than the OP, having our assistant coaches getting senior offers makes us a more desirable club for hungry assistant coaches, just like how helping Gav Brown and Tarks into coaching makes us more attractive to players with ambition to coach when free-agency comes in.

Whats our ideal coaching staff for 2012??

Head Coach: Nathan Buckley
Assistants: ???

Watters (if not coaching St scum)
Sanderson
Eade
Scott Burns (if Adelaide are stupid enough not to appoint him)

wait, with Neeld gone...this is all looking like a conspiracy to sabotage Bucks..

I will be furious is Watters is appointed BEFORE the GF..losing two assistants would be bs.

Did he really say this? Love it! Then again, given the number of absolute d***heads in coaching jobs over the years, entirely appropriate perhaps.:D

Looks like we aren't getting Sanderson, he is the shock Adelaide coach;

GEELONG assistant Brenton Sanderson is expected to be named Adelaide coach tomorrow. Sanderson, a former Adelaide, Collingwood and Geelong player, would replace Neil Craig and caretaker Mark Bickley.
West Coast assistant and former Collingwood captain Scott Burns has been favorite for the Adelaide job.
Sanderson becomes the first former Crows player to coach Adelaide.

On a positive note that means unless St Kilda choose Scott Burns, he is likely to come to Collingwood now.

And on another positive note, Geelong are also down an assistant for the rest of this finals series.

Says a lot for Malthouse's style that his assistants improve their capacity to become senior coaches under him - probably the same characteristic that makes his players such great onfield leaders. A lot more smooth than rough for Collingwood in that.

I would love to quote this every time I see a thread knocking Buckley taking over as the coach.
