Perhaps you mistook my concern for melodrama!

Im off to the States and Europe in December for a few years.

Im hoping it bounces back (or at least doesnt drop further)

Probably short term it depends on some events in Europe. If the Irish go **** up Greek style then we will probably get some real uncertainty for a few weeks which usually hurts currencies such as ours ...

I hope you get lucky and it reverses quickly ...

China, Russia quit dollar

Putin has called for boosting sales of natural resources - Russia's main export - to China, but price has proven to be a sticking point.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who holds sway over Russia's energy sector, said following a meeting with Chinese representatives that Moscow and Beijing are unlikely to agree on the price of Russian gas supplies to China before the middle of next year.

why isn't this being discussed on any form of media??

its ALL korea.

I haven't read the whole thread, but it seems everybody's rooting for the Aussie dollar?

Well, just to be different, I hope the Aussie dollar dives!

The industry I'm in (videogame development) relies on a low Aussie dollar. When the Aussie goes up, work dries up and companies go out of business. (in fact, the company I worked at for 13 years - a company that had been around for just on 30 years in various forms - just finally closed a month ago)

Plus, I get paid in Singapore dollars at the moment.

Down with the Aussie! (or, at least until I finish this current project... ;) )

So you worked for Krome in Melbourne? Mind if I ask what you are up to at the moment?

I'm an games as well, as an animator. This is the first time I have seen someone from the industry around here.

But TBH I don't think a low dollar will save the local industry anymore (thought it certainly wouldn’t hurt it). I reckon games are splitting between the big blockbusters and the low cost Indies, and the middle work for hire market is shrinking and heading to the second world. As these developer markets are maturing, Australia can't compete for W4H games anymore regardless of what the dollar is.

Though I’d love to be wrong.

Ah, nice to see another game dev around here. :)

Worked for Melbourne House for 11 years. Then Atari sold us to Krome when they got out of development and I was with them for 2 years. I left Krome over 2 years ago. (about a year before their 1st round of redundancies) I'm freelancing at the moment... working on a large MMO title for a Singapore-based developer. Mind if I ask who you work for? (feel free to PM me if you don't want to announce it here... :) )

I think a low dollar is a huge factor in the local industry. Having worked at Melbourne House for so long, we saw all the ups and downs. When our dollar was down, the local industry thrived. When it went up, many devs struggled. Luckily, we were always fairly immune to it as a) we generally delivered quality products, and b) we were owned by Atari (since about 1999 anyway) so we always had projects anyway.

However, Krome's problem was not just the dollar, but the dollar vs quality factor... the quality of the majority of Krome's products was just not good enough for the price it cost to have a game made by them. And when our dollar goes up and it becomes more expensive for OS publishers to get Krome to develop their title, it makes it even worse. Pretty simple really. And because of this, Krome got to the point where they had 300+ people and no paying projects! If you make quality products, then the work will come. If you continually make half-arsed rubbish, then it will dry up. It's not rocket science.

I agree with: "I reckon games are splitting between the big blockbusters and the low cost Indies, and the middle work for hire market is shrinking and heading to the second world." :thumbsu:

China in particular are going to gobble up most of the work for hire stuff over the next few years. Smaller devs in places like Australia are really going to have to either a) start delivering 1st-class products, or b) rethink their entire approach to game development, as many have done.

Krome did neither.

This is not something that has just happened now either. Most of us saw the writing on the wall from the moment Krome bought us 4 years ago.... based on the quality of their previous titles, and the way they approached game development. Those who were able to get out at the time, did so. I got out a couple of years later.

Anyway, getting way off the topic now... but the rising Aussie dollar was certainly a factor in Krome's demise. It wasn't the cause of it, but it hurried it along, no question.

IMO it will head to around the 75 - 85c mark in the near future. I'm going over to Las Vegas to have a look at some property in around 3 months time so hoping it stays around the parity mark for the next 3 - 6 months!

Unless there is a war in Korea .....it will not see sub 90's in 2011 IMHO

I dig it the most.

Ive saved a bit over 30 grand for this RTW trip, and was banking on around 90 cents to the dollar at the start of the year.

It sticks around parity, and I effectively have another 3 grand to play with.

Give peace a chance.

Depends on a few things but it could go higher than parity next year.
maybe 1.05 mark.

not a prediction just saying.

I was thinking more 3 - 4 years :D

Once the US is stable, which imo is the 3 - 4 year mark I dont believe the AU$ can stay this high.

The US is screwed for a lot longer than this IMHO.

Infrastructure failing and in debt.

Lots and lots of tough decisions to be taken.....I cant really see them currently being addressed.

Could be at 1.20 by years end.

Ok so we're back just over parity again, but me being me and having no clue about finance i have a question! :)

Do events such as the Cyclone and flooding that have been happening here in Aus have a negative impact on the exchange rates? ie, is there likely to be a large drop or anything?

Sorry if that question is stupid but i really don't know my money stuff :o
