Aussie Flag banned at BDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, I'd almost bet the organisers would absolutely love it if the sort of people who are getting up in arms about this boycotted the event - they have no trouble selling the tickets anyway, and if that lot boycotted it, they'd not have to deal with the exact troublemakers they want to keep out anyway...

Oh yeah and the BDO would get its cred back. As it stands BDO is just a piss up for bogans these days. Its lost its cred and cool years ago.

And i am sure if the same no "****************s rule" was in place like it has been at meredith, BDO would sell out 5 times over as there are a lot of ex BDO fans who rue what it has become.

Seriously - it is just an attempt to have a fun day with no tensions. It is a pretty useless attempt that has backfired - but I don't think that the BDO organisers have a history of being unaustralian. They have exposed hundreds of Aussie acts to the kind of crowds they could never have dreamed of.

Seriously - you think people will not pay to see a great day of music because last year they made a mistake re: the flag?

When it was on the news tonight i said to my son who is nineteen, 'have listen'. His first comment was something like 'well thats a good way to cause trouble'.
He is not usually incitefull or predictive but he may well have hit the nail on the head.
The underyling tension in Sydney (if any) just got a boost. Talk about pouring petrol on a fire.

As for 'Seriously - you think people will not pay to see a great day of music because last year they made a mistake No. The good thing about the young is each year a new generation comes through with their hopes and aspirations. Music gives them the outlet to exercise this freedom. I'm just a little bit peeved that a reputable apolitical event like the BDO has taken what is a political stance under the guise so called 'non inflammatory' policy of political correctness.
To me it just drives the nail deeper in regards to the social elite influencing our country.

dugrene - I agree totally it is a poor approach that will only make things worse.

BDO's best strategy is to publically retract the policy, say it was a naive attempt to make sure everyone had a great day, and that they hope that everyone puts it behind them, and does the most Australian thing they can and that is get to the BDO with a good times attitude and have the day of their summer.

Anyone being aggressive will be removed by security with a zero tolerance approach.

When exactly did it lose it's cred IYO? Was it 1999 when it was full of Goths (just using an example of a year the event was filled with a stereotype, nothing against Goths at all)? Or did they still have cred than in your eyes?

Yeah. Looking through the latest press releases the event organizers seem to be doing a bit of repair work.
If nothing else the Sydney BDO will be under the spotlight and not for all the right reasons.

As i said i have nothing but contempt for the current flag. It does not represent who i am at all.

Well you live in a country under the southern cross that was federated in 1901 after being colanized by Great Britain. I think the flag represents Australia very well. Did you ever think that something that you believe represents you wouldn't represent the majority of other people?

What do you mean the latest release???

News Ltd. reported it before the ONLY Big Day Out Press Release about it WRONGLY.

There is no backtracking happening News Ltd simply either beat it up or got it wrong reporting before the release was even given.

It was never banned, just discouraged, Storm in a tea cup.

It's a day long multi-stage rock concert, and even it was on Australia Day, you'd still be a tool decked out in the Aust flag.

What is the youth of today coming to? Are drugs too expensive or not available or is the music crap?

Insecurity. Cannot gain pride within their own accomplishments so they get it from something they belong to. I might be a loser, but I'M WHITE AUSTRALIAN! etc.

It's sad that those who use nationalism to mask racial hatred now have such a strong effect on how the flag is viewed. The flag is symbolic of nationalism and atm that's negative. To all those that are angry about the lack of pride/respect that is being displayed towards the flag, perhaps vent your anger towards these faux-nationalists (to borrow a term from Mr. Q). Unless of course, that involves self-loathing.

Nobody is saying you should be able to don the flag & go around causing racial violence. National pride & racism are 2 tottaly different things. As I pointed out earlier, there were plenty at BDO last year displaying the flag in many different ways & so far I have only heard of 1 incident involving 1 group. If there's a fight this year involving 2 guys wearing caps will they suddenly become "discouraged"?

Hmm, well I think someone earlier pointed out the BDO isn't what it used to be anyway. Maybe that's just me being all jaded and bitter at 23, who knows.

Did I miss something?

When did all this Australian flag-waving bulldust suddenly become something to do in public in this country?

Geez, when I was growing up we were mildly proud of being Australian, but basically saw it aas the luck of the draw, shrugged out shoulders and got on with it.

Any such posturing and chanting (other than at the cricket - just to get under the skin of the poms) was seen as a little embarrassing and o-so-American.

It's pathetic, it really is.

The aboriginal flag>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>bastardised pommy flag.

IF the aboriginals even had a flag let lone that flag you might have some credibility. I certainly have no ellegiences to England but our flag is certailnly far more representative of the majority of people who inhabit this country than the aboriginal flag.

In what possible way could any gathering be made less by there being no flags there at all? There seems to be a total misunderstanding of the reason for attending a concert, i.e. to listen to the music and watch the performances. Going to the cricket is often done under the pretext of watching the cricket. Did I miss the meeting where it was decided that the national anthem would be played before every minor sporting event? Why does everyone all of a sudden think that every community function must be a participatory event? There is no shame in merely being a spectator.

Howard is winning. The last refuge of the scoundrel has become the norm. Because the people who live in this country, the ones who are so susceptible to this flapdoodle and flagwaving are so stupid, the only reply they have to a someone cringeing at their crassness is to suggest they leave the country if they don't like it.

What they're unable to comprehend is that they, the lunatics, have changed the country. They delight in their success in making this a dumber place. This rabble have taken over the asylum, and some of us have noticed.

When did the vast dumbing down of this country begin? I remember growing up seeing and coming across a lot of smart people around me and used to wonder why smart Australians would get fed up and just leave this place.

10 years ago I used to be a proud Australian. I didn't need a flag to prove it or thump my chest, but I was proud, very proud. In the 10 years since I just despise how stupid Australians have become. There is just so much apathy amongst Australians its sickening.

Now i am strongly thinking about my future in this country and will not be able to tolerate another 3 years with a howard run government. I am craving change no demanding it now as i am sick and tired of boganism eroding what is potentially a great country. It makes me sick and frustrated when i am constantly faced with a media that incites hatred and promotes stupidity and dumbness in mainstream australia. On top of all that younger Australians are too greedy to care about anything else and too stupid too realise the major flaws in their ways.

Yep, little johnny has got the sheep in his control, beats up on the patriotism theme, fuels dislike of immigrants, bingo, all these idiots are running around wearing a piece of cloth, as if that makes them a better australian.

stop bitching on a message board and run for government or leave the country. You strike me as the type who sits idle whilst bitching about all the problems without offering solutions

Wise words indeed.
