It may seem a while away but the australian selectors really have to plan for the world cup next year, there are some players that need to be dropped and others to be promoted, i think they normally take a squad of 15 here is my starting 11 with the four extra members of the squad.

1.A.Gilchrist
2.D.Martyn
3.R.Ponting
4.D.Lehmann
5.S.Watson
6.M.Bevan
7.A.Symonds
8.J.Hopes
9.B.Lee
10.S.Warne
11.G.McGrath

Squad Members

M.Hayden
N.Hauritz
J.Gillespie
S.Lee

Gilchrist picks himself at opener, Martyn should be used there much in the same thought process of when M.Waugh moved to opener. Ponting at 3 with an emphasis on developing his bowling as well, Lehmann at4 perfect for the position should have been there for the last five years, Watson at 5 opportunity for him to show his stuff with the bat, also developing with the ball into a strike bowler, give him the opportunity to bat high and bowl high, Bevan best architect of a one day innings of all time, Symonds is just a freak, tell him to look at the way O'Donnell use to bat and do that, more than handy with the ball and his fielding is matching winning stuff. Hopes can open the bowling and has shown how economical he can be as well as taking wickets, is a strong batsmen who adds depth at 8, B.Lee his bowling should of developed further by next world cup, his improvement in batting continues to make him a definate selection, Warne at 10 picks himself, and McGrath at 11 no need to comment there.

Hayden is in squad cause he is a destroyer , great fieldsman and can bat anywhere, Hauritz is there as he is a top class bowler and young and will succeed warne in the one day team. Gillespie is class, and shane lee is picked to further the case for allrounders lee could also be used to open the innings and bat at any position, picked mainly on his dynamic batting though also can contribute 6-8 overs with the ball,
what do you guys think would love to see your team for the cup or a comment on mine.

Did you watch the games this year? You might as well put a real batsman in because his bowling is not up to it and neither is his batting.I wouldnt write the Waugh boys off yet either.I will reserve my judgement till after the next tour before naming my squad.Certainties will be Gilly,Mcgrath,Lehmann,Martyn,Ponting,Bevan and Warney depending on retirement. If both Waughs go then Hayden,Campbell and the like should be considered.

I respect the waughs to the utmost, but i am a realist, i still believe S.Waugh will be the test captain in 2003, i do believe M.Waugh career is coming to an end though and that is not in a disrespectful way. The one day game is a younger mans game and in recent times is all about the right balance of batsman, allrounders and bowlers.

As for Andrew Symonds he has freak ability, needs an extended run and if you watched the one dayers this year you would of seen him turn the game with the ball at the gabba, his bowling has batting and bowling does suffer from inconsistency, but confidence and an extended run in the one day team will allow all to see how good he can be for australia.

As for Young, you must be thinking about Brad Young from Sa, i don't think he is anything like moody, moody was batsmen who bowled medium pace, Young is an offspin bowler who bats okay but with little consistency.

What I mean is that Young will be the comeback player and make an impression. Is a hard hitting lower order batsman and can bowl very tightly although he looks like he should be spanked all over the park!;)

At this stage I'd like to see the following in the World Cup squad in 2003

1. A.Gilchrist (wk)
2. M. Hayden (sheer weight of runs, seems the obvious replacement for Mark Waugh)
3. R.Ponting
4. D.Lehmann (seems best suited to No. 4)
5. S. Waugh (would be surprised if he was dumped as captain by next year, but the end is looming.)
6. M.Bevan
7. A. Symonds (needs to be assured of a regular game)
8. S. Watson (second all-rounder in the team adds flexibility, Would be the third bowler)
9. B. Lee
10. S. Warne (Need a spinner and while MacGill threatens, Warne's greater experience wins out in the end.)
11.G.McGrath

Theoretically this team bats down to No. 10 while McGrath, Lee, Watson, Warne, Symonds and Lehmann share the bowling. Pity Bevan doesn't work on his bowling a little more.

Squad Members

12. G. Blewett (weight of runs, good fieldsman, and medium pace bowling handy)
13. J.Gillespie
14. D.Martyn
15. I. Harvey (perhaps an offspinner instead, but none really stand out as solid one day practioners in international competition)

My team with options in brackets

Specialist Bats

1. Gilchrist (w/k)
2. Hayden
3. Martyn
4. Ponting
5. Bevan
6. Katich (Haddin and Campbell)

All Rounders

7. Shane Watson
8. Andrew Symonds
9. Ian Harvey (Shane Lee)

Bowlers

10. McGrath
11. Gillespie
12. Bichel
13. Warne (c)
14. MacGill
15. Brett Lee (Inness, Bracken, )

Brett Lee needs to substantially improve his bowling economy rate otherwise I'd take one of the other young guys.
