Australian Open 2016 - Day 8

If QF's are what we are judging our number 2 player in the world...dear gosh to say the least! Shouldn't the number 2 player at least make a GS final within the last 12 months Not asking for her to win it- Serena is there, but the minimum should be a GS final, otherwise get someone in the number 2 spot that will, and the worst thing Halep will be back winning a load of mickie mouse events post Australian Open to keep her ranking. My main issue (and this is mens too), is the points allocation for Slams. The difference should be at least 2 times what it is right now. Then you would have players ranked where they should have. Look did I underrate Halep, a fraction. Thought she had 1-2 less QFs, but my point stands, if she is the number 2 player, the system needs an overhaul.

Well Muguruza has only got to the Wimbledon final and nothing else throughout 2015, so it will be interesting how she goes this year. It is all about consistency throughout the year that is why Aga is ranked as high as she is as she plays all year whilst others get injured. My fav female player atm is Karolina Pilsokova (sp!) but she needs to become more consistent.

Muguruza isn't 3 in the world just from making a Wimbledon final you do realise?

I don't even think it was about that. Zhang just didn't know how to adjust her play, and so as Keys' level naturally dropped - so did hers. Made for some embarrassing rallies.

She'd go close to copping a double bagel from Williams.

If Zhang plays Serena or Azarenka, she's gone in straight sets

Social media is cool guys.

Time filler. Simple.

Halep was injured this tournament. Indeed most of the top 10 seemed to carry injures coming into the aus open. The murder of the seeds seems to have been worse than normal due to that.

Also 2 sets allow for a greater chance of an upset. And women don't really have a serve to get them out of trouble if another aspect of their game is on the nose.

Women's serve is so weak, most of them struggle to hold serve especially in tight situations.

Anyway, it's a shame Keys ended up getting injured she was playing well throughout the tournament. It was hard watching her struggle on court with her injury, I am surprised she didn't retire hurt.

I reckon the women's rankings are a positive in terms of how deep and even the competition is (apart from Serena and probably Azarenka at her best). Mens on the other hand, someone like Isner is consistently on the fringe of the top ten but he's as far away from the top guys as anyone.

Another thing I'm beginning to appreciate about the women's game is that, unlike the men, it's not primarily all about power and hitting the opponent off the court, with the exception of Williams who is a physiological anomaly.

Radwanska is a crafty player who relies on touch, consistency and variety and she is 4 in the world. It's good to watch the tactical nounce of players like her who set up points relying on accuracy and spin rather than just power.

What a load of rubbish.

Up until this tournament since 2014 at slams:

Halep:
QF, F, SF, 3R, QF, 2R, 1R & SF.

Muguruza:
4R, QF, 1R, 1R, 4R, QF, F & 2R.

Radwanska:
SF, 3R, 4R, 2R, 4R, 1R, SF & 3R.

Sharapova:
4R, W, 4R, 4R, F, 4R, S & Absent.

Kerber:
4R, 4R, QF, 3R, 1R, 3R, 3R, 3R.

Kvitova:
1R, 3R, W, 3R, 3R, 4R, 3R, QF.

Honestly if she's done nothing in 2 years WTH have the rest done?

*I understand Sharapova & Azarenka would be ranked 2nd & 3rd in an ideal world but if you miss large parts of the season injured and barely win any titles you'll obviously be ranked lower than others.

Awesome post.

Agreed. In addition, the top players on the WTA tour have to be extra 'prepared' for each player they face - because if they're 20-30% below their best and they meet a talented player who performs on the day, then anything can happen. I might be in the minority here but I don't particularly mind this.

No different than Suarez Navarro, Errani, Vinci on the women's side. The latter two have dropped off a bit the last 18 months but they've sat at the fringes of the top 10 and bent over for the top players for years too.

Vinci did beat Serena to make the USO final though. CSN I understand, but even Errani at her peak took a few big scalps.
