Great show last night.

All the right people won. Jarvis is getting over like mad. Can I just say about that match, them just doing wrestling wrestling for the length they did and keeping the crowd into it, warms my heart. Ugg is the champ.

Rapid/Brooks was top notch, didn't disappoint.

What was the deal with Dusk/Menero? Just a time thing and they had to cut it? Did seem to run fairly late as the ME didn't start until just before 9:30pm, but they were the 3rd match, so don't understand how that would happen. Surely could've cut a few minutes from the tag match (which wasn't as billed anyway) or Fantasia/O'Leary. Eugenie/Aysha probably went a minute or two longer than it should've also... so I dunno. Found that a bit weird.

And a big FU to the kid (I think it was a kid, didn't bother turning around) yelling shit the entire night, most people in the section were about to deck this mofo. Two or three rows behind me, but piercing all the same. Feel sorry for those directly in front of it.

I'm a bit disappointed by Ricky's title reign. Feels like he just became the substitute for what was going to happen with Slex.

It felt like last night's match had been booked as an opportunity to give him a meaningful win before Dusk won Ballroom Brawl and cashed in relatively quickly.

That result kind of made me question why they had South beat Ugg in the first place. I dunno, maybe they've had to change direction with Slex and The Parea being unavailable.

I agree about South's reign, also it was time to pull the trigger on Ugg. Jarvis would have been a good person to lose in Ugg's spot if you wanted to do it on this show. But I can see him doing a big Slex match or such and need him hot for that.

Enjoyed the show! Thought it was probably the weakest show they’ve done in some time. Not bad by any stretch, lately they’ve just been fantastic and this was really good.

tag match was a little rough but fun, great to see a bunch fresh faces, especially all from Melbourne I believe.

Lucas and Lucky was great fun, interested to see where the personal assistant thing goes. Also super shocked Slex just walked back in????

Agreed above about Dusk and Rocky something really weird there, if it was time or something just felt weird I agree. thought this feud was sure to keep dusk busy on his way back to Ricky but all that just went out the window. So I’m not sure but we’re here talking about it I guess!

Brooks and Rapid was fantastic. Just great stuff you want to see on your wrestling show. The one to watch absolutely. Brooks is just flexing how good he is and I love it.

Jarvis and Thorpe was good, liked the finish.

Ayesha and Eugenie wasn’t for me I’ll be honest. Maybe just no chemistry between or maybe just my taste but wasn’t for me.

Ugh and South was really good, as expected. Super confused on just switching the belt back again. I’ve said before I don’t have any interest in Ugg as champ, it was always going to happen this just feels like a lackluster way to get there.

High Stakes ended up being a strong show after a shaky start.

Thumbs up:

Brooksy as IC champ pretty much guarantees a quality match in the mid-card each time. Both defences so far have elevated the challenger in defeat.

Ugg deserves a proper championship run and now was the time to do it. Great match with a hot crowd.

Clydesdale is an entertaining act

Erika Reid looks a million bucks. It's impressive how quickly she has filled the gap left by DELTA.

Jarvis' entrance looks incredible and is a great way to capitalise on the Thornbury Theatre.

Thumbs in the middle:

Eugenie looks the part but when the bell rings the aura comes off pretty quick. I don't kow what it is because I've heard glowing praise for her from QLD but if anything, Erika is a more intimidating presence at the moment.

Thumbs down

This show took a while to get going. They started with a longish promo, then the tag match which was shaky and both teams appeared to get pretty lost at one point. Dusk vs Rocky was over before it began. It wasn't until the third segment that we got some decent action. A strong opener always sets the tone and I felt this show took a while to get into a rhythm.

Ricky South's reign was underwhelming and needed longer to establish him as a force in MCW. They had booked themselves into a bit of a corner where the fans weren't going to accept anymore screwjob finishes. I'm not sure where they go with ICON$ and South from here

I thought the timing was a shame, with The Regime headed towards their tag title challenge in Sydney.

We missed what might've been a fun opportunity to have an MCW title defence in PWA. The belt hasn't been defended outside Melbourne since before COVID, it was something that Ricky could've hung his hat on in terms of trying to create some meaning or significance to his title reign.

Watching the High Stakes stream last night, and I think that maybe more than any other single MCW I've ever seen, this was a massive changing of the guard, hey? I'm not just talking about new names, I'm talking about the commitment to them going forward.

Clydesdale turns up and he's already playing the "top fun heel" role that is prevalent in a lot of indy wrestling, likely locking him in going forward.

The Physicals looked great, and absolutely look like a going concern.

I know Lucky has been around for at least a year, but him being involved with Slex is huge. Also, "Mr Slex" pops me huge.

They've committed Fantasia to a storyline for the rest of the year.

It didn't matter in the slightest that Rapid lost. He's 100% legit in the MCW context now, he could be slotted anywhere on the card and be accepted in the spot.

Giving Eugenie a heater feels like doubling down on the massive investment they've made in her.

the amount of talent is insane, and mitch water man, filips, parea, tommy knight, slex didnt even wrestle

This is actually very easy to explain, to simplify it in the most basic way MCW stripped her of anything that made her unique and have really hurt her wrestling career unfortunately.

Eugenie in 2024 would come out to old school hip hop, she was a very strong face that would beat all her opponents via choke submission and it really worked well because of how different she was and how good her booking was as a collective effort of the promoters using her.

MCW started booking her and within 6 months her hip hop was gone, her reputation as an undefeated submission specialist was gone, her dominance is now gone as she begs off from Erika Reid and needs the help of a masked wrestler to help her win, she is now just another generic heel that cheats, the same type of heel that every promotion in the country has 5 of.

Ooft.

I really wanted to give them another chance too. I would be RAGING that it had gone from the city to north Williamstown!

I wonder whether "more intimate" is a tell...

DMDU moving a venue happens so often that you have to wonder how legit it is. Once every couple of years then sure, that falls into "Sometimes shit happens" but it seems every show or two has a venue issue.

That DMDU crowd from night 1 sure did look “intimate” in their social media posts… yikes

Unfortunately even without the scandals the promotion went through DMDU was never a long term feasible option, the novelty was always going to wear off really quickly especially when Bateman started booking sometimes as many as 3 deathmatches on a regular show and then started doing entire shows with just deathmatch after deathmatch, you can go to one DMDU show and see enough deathmatches to last you forever.

The thing for them since returning seems to be internationals, I cringe at how much money must've been burned on names that Bateman marks out for that won't draw more than 10 people. Oh well, Toshiiyuki Sakuda in August for them, maybe more than 10 will know him.

Similar. I was half way interested in the tag tournament as I'm a fan of The Pulse, but it just gets old after a while. The change of venue would actually be a lot easier for me as I'm on the west side and Williamstown is a lot easier than the city, but after a while that good will takes a massive hit. There are some really devoted fans of this style and there's some who actually travel from interstate for this weekend of shows, ****ing them around less than 24 hours before the first show, like c'mon guys you can do better than that. I have no real negativity towards them anymore because quite frankly they're going to do whatever they want anyway, but for the audience that actually sticks by you, c'mon guys do better.

And now they're bragging that tonight's show is a "Sell Out" Well that's pretty easy in a room that is 100 cap at the absolute max.

And stylistically, I'm just sick of out of shape people hitting each other with light tubes, I saw a match of Jake Navara vs Sketch a few weeks ago in Colac where they used some plunder and busted out a light tube for one spot, it was refreshing to see weapons incorporated into actual wrestling instead of being used as a substitute for or excuse for lack of it.

I'm blown away that they've announced another show for next year.

It's not working dude...

It's a shame that New Japan screwed them over. Still would've been tough to create a going concern in places like Wagga and Ballarat, but might've created ongoing reasons for people to attend.

They hadn't even booked their champ Ali for this event.

I'm not saying this to be mean spirited as I certainly respect Cam Vale's resume but this just seems like a well connected guy trying to play wrestling promoter with the taxpayers money, the only event I think might have possibly made a return and brought tourism to Ballarat is the Aussie Stampede show because that one was really well done with the talent booked and seemed to have a decent crowd.

The rest? Ridiculous ideas that never would've worked like the Australia Vs India show without any of India's biggest wrestling stars or this attempt at an NWA themed show or even the failure that was the TNA tour. He should get out of the game I think, he doesn't have anything positive to contribute at all.

Between Cam Vale and Fivey cancelling pretty much every single show they run, serious questions have to be asked about the damage this does when other promotions talk to internationals about bringing them to Australia. OPW tries to present itself as a premium Australian product, but its getting embarrassing now

It's frustrating to watch this play out time and time again. I'm surprised that OPW haven't been given better advice TBH.

MCW pulls the numbers that they do because they have built an audience over time that is loyal to their brand. They had the benefit of a strong foundation and they've been smart about using high profile names that attract eyeballs and sell tickets. If you think you are going to magic up 800+ crowds in regional centres then you need ex-WWE talent and decent names at that. WSW already do this and do it well.

There's also the question of how much the market here can sustain. Aussie wrestling fans are spoiled for choice these days. There are top tier indy promotions in each capital charging up to $90, WSW runs a bi-annual tours, AEW have brought out TV in the last 6 months and WWE are about to ask fans to open a vein to travel to Perth for Family Jewel.

There's only so far the Aussie wrestling dollar (I'm christening it the 'Black T-shirt dollar') can stretch.
