it's gotta be NSW v Qld.
in just about every sport, whenever NSW come up against Queensland it's a big event. The Warratahs v Reds in the Super 14 is usually the biggest game of the season, Blues v Bulls in the cricket is a big rivalry and even the Swans v Lions is slowly becoming a big rivalry as the clubs adopt the NSW and Queensland culture. Even in surf lifesaving, the Queenslanders are always out to beat the New South Welshmen.
No doubt the biggest of them all is the rugby league State of Origin though. Andrew Symonds once said that running out in a maroon jersey in State of Origin is the pinnacle of sporting achievements in Queensland.
probably the second biggest rivalry would Australia v New Zealand. in sports like soccer, basketball, cricket, rugby league and netball there is a massive rivalry between the two countries, but nothing bigger than rugby union's Bledisloe Cup.

I agree.

The difference is, NSW and QLD in rugby league has been incredibly close since the inception of Origin.

In other sports, it's not even nearly as close. Australia v New Zealand in rugby union goes NZ's way most of the time.

SA vs Victoria. While AFL SOO is no longer with us, South Australians just HATE Victorians with a passion still to this very day. I've heard stories of supporter buses of Victorian clubs going home with smashed windows after LOSSES, let alone wins. Police protection is ALWAYS required for travelling Victorian Cheer Squads and I wouldn't leave your car in the AAMI Stadium Car Par if you have Victorian number plates. Football isn't the only thing they dislike us for, we did steal their Grand Prix, thus starting the famous "KICK A VIC" campaign.

NSW vs Victoria. Just have to look at the comments of the premier of the state last week in regards to Melbourne calling us "bleak city" when gloating over winning the rights to a certain number a Soccer matches in the next 4 years. Its a :D:D:D for tat war that has gone on for longer than NSW vs Qld has been. Its the reason Canberra was created for god sake. Anyway. The Victory and Sydney FC have got a nice rivalry going, the Basketball and Netball teams of the team cities fought out the last Grand Finals (with Melbourne coming out on top thank you very much) and of course there is the old "which is better debate - Aussie Rules or Rugby League".

Anyway, aren't we all forgetting the Poms - The Cricket, Union, League, Soccer and pretty much every sport the two compete against each other against. Doubt any other rivalry but Australia vs England at the MCG can get 100,000 to it.

I only knew about a Syndey V Melbourne rivalry when i went to melbourne.

I never knew it existed in Sydney.

The original Barmy army was the Rugby League Lions of Britain touring Australia.

Seems to have caught on in other sports.

RL in NSW and Qld is massive, i'd say the the biggest rivalry in Australia, heck if you're born in either state you more or less know RL.

Thats a big chunk of the Aussie population within Australia thats interested.

The RL fans of England use to come out here every four years, they loved it, thousands of them would turn up.

A test at Oylmpic park had a full house with thousands of English fans.

Type in google RL Barmy army .

geez, those south australians sound like a bunch of ferals.
no doubt there is a fierce rivalry between sa and vic, though there isn't really an annual sporting event which typifies this rivalry. it seems the bigger rivalry in the afl is actually between the two sa clubs, port adelaide and adelaide.
maybe the domestic cricket game between the two states for the david hicks shield i think it is...

like copa said, i didn't even realise there was a rivalry between victoria and nsw until i went to melbourne. there's no real annual sporting event which typifies this rivalry, nobody in nsw really cares if we beat victoria in the cricket, soccer, netball, basketball etc. the rivalries in the afl between the swans and victorian clubs are more club rivalries than state rivalries.

yeah, that's a big one that i forgot - probably because, up until recently, the pomes have been so inept at competing against the aussie in anything except tiddleywinks.
the rivalry between australia and england is probably the biggest, followed by nsw v qld and then aus v nz.

Part of the Sydney v Melbourne thing is that the Sydney people like to pretend it doesn't exist. And yet, they seem to make many more "Bleak City" comments than we ever make about Sydney. Only last week, when announcing that they had secured some soccer matches for Sydney, Morris Iemma made it out to be a big victory over Melbourne.

trust me... the rivalry is hopelessly one-sided. Most of it comes from melbourne. I really had no idea it existed until i went to melbourne and heard anti-Sydney comments.

You're a case in point. Your "one-sided rivalry" comment is intended to be a jibe. It's a jibe about how you don't make many jibes. Ironic.

sydneysiders tend to think of melbourne as just another city, like adelaide, canberra, perth etc.
iemma would've made a big deal out of securing soccer matches for sydney over any city because it's a big deal. in fact, if he'd gotten them over queensland there would've been far more jibes.

He didn't secure them over Melbourne, and that's the point. He secured them ahead of the rest of Australia. It had nothing to do with Melbourne, and yet he pretended it was about Melbourne.

He beat out Queensland to get the matches too, and yet he didn't mention Queensland at all.

well that's pretty lame tbh.

Growing up in Sydney there I can tell you the same thing as Copa, never knew that there was a rivalry between VIC and NSW until I lived in Melbourne....

QLD v NSW on the other hand...

As an Englishman I'd still put Australia behind Germany, Argentina, France, Scotland, Ireland and Turkey (football only) in everything but cricket.

Being a born South Australian, growing up in NSW - I can tell you that the SA v VIC rivalry is the more passionate/bitter rivalry than any other state.

10-15 years ago, it would have been borderline with NSW v QLD - but imho that's mainly due to sydneysiders. You see, we don't really hate QLD'ers. When it comes to SOO, people from sydney just aren't as passionate as QLD'ers by a fair margin. We don't see it as "do or die", it's just a game to the majority of us. That's one of the reasons why the first game isn't sold out. Sure we'll support NSW, but in reality we won't lose any sleep if we lose a series.

Oh no, not the one sided rivalry again . . . Melbourne same as Canberra? :o

To be honest, there's no real sporting rivalry between Victoria and NSW but a shyteload of it in every other facet of life. One way rivalry? Well the whining heard from up north when Melbourne was chosen to be bombed by Al Qaeda and the successful Commie games say otherwise. We compete on many levels but you'd expect that from Australia's two biggest cities.

Internationally - Australia v England >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> New Zealand

NRL - NSW v QLD really benefits from the code only being popular in two states. Other than that I struggle to find another that comes remotley close.

AFL - WC v Freo . . . Crows v Power . . . Carlton v Collingwood v Essendon are some of the most intense rivalries regardless of ladder positions.

You still haven't worked it out. The rvalry IS one-sided. Most Sydneysiders didn't care that Melbourne got the commie games ... i didn't watch a single event even.

The everyday people in Sydney really do see melbourne as just another city.

That and it's bloody hard in Sydney to get off work early mid-week... or even get home and get back to the stadium in time...the commutes can be horrible.

you make a good point minkus_swan, though i'd have to say that you're not gonna see sydneysiders fire up for a sporting event much more than for state of origin. then again, you'd probably see them fire up more if the federal government brought in a latte tax. lol.

Speak for yourself... Your a South Aussie, so you dont count

The Queenslanders are getting a little crazy up here at the moment

Adelaide has an inferiority complex to Melbourne and Melbourne has one to Sydney. Sydney is top dog and doesn't give a stuff about any of them, it's a city of the world not just Australia.
