What an awesome relay it was. The men finally got their first well deserved gold, after the women won 16. :p

No need to apologies, I know what you’re saying. Glad we understand each other. :)

Is Thorpe to CHICKEN to race any more and has he got over his mystery illness "Fear of Failure"

Thorpe is a swimming champion of the first order.

He had the courage to admit he was not 100% health wise, why put knives into him for being upfront?.

The simple fact is, him, at about 75% is better than most of what we put out there. He still would have placed if not won in most of his events.

be that as it may, i was listening to Kiren Perkins in an Interview and he said ian could do more damage to his heart if he swam not 100% fit/healthy

surely his health must come first

You sound soooo stupid it's not funny. Thorpe would have won 4 or 5 gold at these games if fit, he wasn't fit so didn't risk it, pretty simple stuff.

I actually thought England were going to win the relay.

Very happy for the boys. Although, i was very impressed by their performance in the 4x100 free. :thumbsu:

Interesting to compare to Manchester where both games had 42 events.
Australian men
Gold 17 down to 3
Silver 5 increased to 6
Bronze 2 increased to 8

Women
Gold 10 increased to 16
Silver 8 increased to 12
Bronze 6 increased to 9

Obviously the gold drop off from (an incredible) 17 down to 3 is the glaring difference but if you exclude Thorpe and Hackett from the Manchester results they got almost the same number of podium spots. There is no doubt that England, South Africa and Scotland had much stronger mens teams in these games. They got 4 mens gold in Manchester and 14 here. This has been a good games for the men if the guys getting the silver and bronze can turn them into better results at the world champs next year.

And the Australian men's track and field team have outperformed swimming with several more events to come.
Swimmers have alot more competition, these same athletes get smashed in the olympics where as our men do well in the olympics swimming

You're kidding right?

There are about 5 competitive swimming nations worldwide, most of whom are in the Commonwealth. There are about 200 competitive nations in track and field, 50 odd of which are competitive in the Commonwealth.

I'm sorry but you have embaressed yourself.

Did I? How? Fact is Australia always do well in the Track and field in the C/Games but come the real deal they get smashed, atleast our swimmers are ALWAYS competitive

Our track and field team is nothing short of a disgrace and we are one of the worst in the world

Historically I will agree with you.

The Australian men's athletic team is full of young, developing talent that is budding to explode on the international scene. Men's swimming is in shambles in Australia without Hackett and Thorpe and the talent coming through juniors simply isn't as strong as it used to be.

The comment is, wouldn't it be harder to win Gold Medal's (indeed medals) with so many nations worldwide being competitive at Olympic/Worlds/Commonwealth in track and field versus swimming...

The answer I believe is yes.
