I'd use PhotoShop.

however, that's not really necessary!!!

There's plenty of little freeware and shareware utilites that allow you to resize/crop images. You really want to crop it though, especially if it's not the right shape to begin with. go to download.com and search for one...

is paintshop pro still shareware? if so, that's worth a download.

If you get desperate, I'm sure one of us PhotoShop goons can help you out...

It's relatively easy with a program like Paintshop or even ACDSee.

But if you can't manage it or can't be bothered i'd be quite happy to reduce it for you, won't take a minute.

Yeah, use one of the above programs. Go to a download site such as www.zdnet.com/downloads and choose something that suits you. Or if you have the capability, use grokster or kazaa to download a really decent application.

Most programs work by using the pointer to select a square or rectangle around the picture (click on the pointer icon and point and drag). The avaters here aren't big, so make sure you concentrate solely on the subject matter of interest.

Do this and make it as square as possible, otherwise bigfooty will shrink it. Then somewhere in the menus you'll find the crop option. That'll remove all the junk you don't want. Next find the resize option in the menus. Make sure that pixels or centimetres are selected as units. Simply overtype the greater of the x or y co-ordinates with 50 for pixels or 1.76 for cm, the max allowed by bigfooty. the other co-ordinate should change automatically. Save the picture and voila! an avatar for bigfooty

ACDSee is a great program to use to resize pictures to use as avatars. I was able to help Dan26 last night, so don't worry everyone.

Just out of interest, does anyone know how one can resize annimated pictures using ACDSee??

Cheers!!

Impossible. You need a gif animator to do that because you need to reduce frame by frame.

How do I make it smaller so that it fits. The picture is on a web-site.

a SLOW step by step instruction please. I have no idea.
I asked Bluey on the suggestions board if the avatars could by 100x100 pixels like most other boards but got a big fat no for some reason. :( http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40378

I shrunk my avatar using MGI Photosuite II.

Most of the boards I go to have 64x64 pixel avatars - that made for fun enlarging a 55x55 pixel picture. Recently someone asked on one of those boards if the avatar size could be enlarged and the moderators said no because then the avatars would be too distracting, despite the boards having the capability of users being able to turn off avatars.
