We need to start a campaign. It's worrying that there has been no talk at all.

nicky, are you prepared to move international?

Oh please, as if he's leaving Sydney.

Where are you originally from?

Canberra is a weird place. There's barely anyone around. Saying that, the galleries and museums are super interesting. Even as a 14-year old, I really loved it, but there's way too much to see.

That is purely a tourist perspective of Canberra. Could we please leave this for discussion for how it is to live in certain areas please.

I've lived in a few places, but spent 7 years in Sydney. It is a hole. Avoid at all costs. Whilst the weater is good, as well as the beach lifestyle (if you're in the small minority that lives near a beach) the place is a dive.
Souless suburbs, poor transport and rude, rude people. The service you get in Sydney is shocking. When I had a few of my old mates visit down in Melbourne, this was one of the first thigs that they noticed. In Sydney, they literally stand and wait for your to bark you order at them.

My take? Aside from the climate (which is a dealbreaker for some people), Melbourne is a more livable city for the average citizen. The reason is mostly due to geography and planning. Sydney is in a basin with a huge harbour that splits the city in two. It also grew more haphazardly than any other city in Australia. The result is that it is a total bitch to get around, with disjointed road infrastructure and a knotted public transport system.

That said, if you have the money/flexibility to live in the better parts of the city (eastern suburbs, north shore, northern beaches) or even just close to the centre/coast (the Shire, inner west) these things aren't so much of an issue. In that situation, IMO the lifestyle is as good or better than what you will find anywhere in Melbourne.

People talk a lot about how Melbourne has superior culture/bars/restaurants/cafes/nightlife. That's true up to a point I think. The average standard in Melbourne is probably higher. OTOH despite a lot of crap places, Sydney is a big city and there is no shortage of good ones either. Unlike Melbourne, I can't just wander into any Sydney cafe and take it for granted that I will get good service and a very good cup of coffee - but as long as I know where I'm going, I'll never struggle to find it.

The rude people one - well, I think that's mostly crap and a function of people's perspectives. Plenty of Sydneysiders will rant to you about how Melburnians don't wave you in when traffic is merging, or how the city is full of self-important yuppies and hipsters who look down their nose at you. Me, I have lived in both and found about the same proportion of w***ers and good people in each.

Yes. In my case it was because of the shitful weather. 18 months and 2 winters there had me ready to top myself. Loved a lot of stuff about the place, including my job, but I just had to get out.

Personally would recommend that everybody tries living in another city some day anyway. Best way to work out what sort of lifestyle you really want, rather than just adapting to your circumstances and not really considering the alternatives.

You hate winter so you moved from Melbourne to Reykjavik?

i've thought about moving to sydney; there is a lot to like about it.
but i don't think i could stand not living in a proper footy city.
On the plus side, the AFL community in Sydney is pretty tight-knit and really good. The few genuine footy pubs in Sydney are awesome venues, really friendly.

It's a bit lonely if you aren't a Swans fan though.

I hope not.

Ed, i have lived overseas before and could do it again. Berlin or nyc would be good.

St.Petersburg FTW.

I'm glad I made the change to Brisbane. A few years here and then off to Sydney or Perth, hopefully. Just to see what they are like.

People from the northern coast of NSW really are... different. And there are tonnes of them up here in Brisbane.

Probably deserves its own thread but does anybody know what I'm talking about when I say that those people are a bit odd?

Not in a bad way.
