Dan Annable isn’t even on there 😆

The vfl media are even incompetent with their hit pieces

I'm just glad they included a guy who was overlooked for multiple years in Bruce.

GWS Academy (80) v (107) Brisbane Academy

The Lions got the better of the Giants, saluting by 27 points at Blacktown. Matthew Owen was excellent for the Lions with a game-high 31 disposals, seven inside 50s and two goals. He had plenty of support from Ashlon Prindable, brother of Collingwood draftee Tyan, who had 24 touches and a goal. Harrison Bridge was influential with 25 disposals and nine marks while his bottom-age brother Jackson contributed 20 touches. Hawthorn father/son prospect Cooper Hodge, son of club great Luke, was among Brisbane’s best with 21 touches and four tackles. 16-year-old Rohan Bickerton returned 4.2 with a dangerous forward showing.

If the reactionary buffoons in the AFL administration end up backing down on the new draft bid matching requirements then it could end up suiting us magnificently re matching the bids for Caylen Murray and possibly others like Matthew Owen and Harrison Bridge.... and even sweeter for the nuclear meltdowns if we deem him good enough Cooper Hodge.

He'll be sitting at home seeing that graphic and thinking "sure, I just signed a three year extension, got a premiership, but now that the Victoria media are upset about my existence at the club - that's when I know I've made it!".

They will roll back for teams down the bottom of the ladder but not for teams at the top.
The AFL will want to get something through.

Heaven forbid the AFL or even the Saints look at facts......
Gotta go with the Vibe, the Emotion etc etc etc. and include #VICBIAS.
Look at the whinging at how the Lions as premiers are able to recruit 2 UFA. Like no other Premier has ever been able to do apparently ffs.

You are just a hater Voss the boss, bringing facts into the discussion is just not on.

It escapes the lunatics down south that we have only ever had 1 top 10 National Draft academy selection and he (Annable) had zero to do with our recent success

Wouldn’t put it past them?
40% discount seems like a lot from one team to another.

The problem with the Free Agency discussion is that the AFL has been doing all they can to promote player movement.
Free Agents are much more likely to stay where they are if they are restricted as to where they can move.
Players want Premierships and when coming closer to the end than the beginning of a career they are going to want to move to the higher performing clubs, which you do not blame them for.
Other than some who just genuinely want out of their current clubs.

Free agency eligibility should be even earlier. RFA after 6 years, UFA from 8 on. Players might actually go to a lower club if they have more than 5 years of their career left.

Nooooo. You want players to be able to move when they’re just entering their prime.

I’m of the opposite opinion. It should be harder for players to move. Clubs need to have more control over players until they reach unrestricted free agency.

Why would the players association agree to this?

1 dissolve aflpa

2 players are drafted to a club and that’s it, no movement. No trade. No FA. Play for the one club until you retire.

3. Players are paid based on their average SuperCoach score from the prior year.

ZM advocates every season to delist players and go to the draft to keep the list young so that he can vacuum up all of the SC points on offer

What a leader.

The roberts hype is v. funny, 2 score involvements from 42 disposals is pretty hard to do!

It gets overlooked how badly WCE fumbled the Allen situation as well. He was by all accounts ready to stay but their handling of the Sam Mitchell coffee meeting put a stop to that idea. Once he was clearly on the move, of course he wanted to go to a club with a chance at success over the next few seasons. I have read from WCE supporters that the Eagles were essentially packing his bags for him for the compo pick. His injury history and their list needs meant that the #2 pick for Allen was arguably overs, for his output and injury history. Though hopefully the worst of it is behind him. There is certainly no guarantee that he will have a good season or that he will play more than 20 games over his contract. Since we have been successful a lot of our big name FA signings have been guys that involve risk because of their injury history.

I am loving what Draper is bringing so far but he is still a risk with his injury history. He was on the Essendon list for 9 seasons made his debut in his 4th season after an ACL in his 3rd season in 2019.

Putting aside that we lost 2 best 23 players to FA, the salary cap means that no team can hold onto all their best/better players unless those players take unders. A well run club with a good culture and clear direction can do that, even if they're not in their premiership window yet. Good staff can develop players that maybe haven't shown their true potential into solid AFL level players or better, recruiters need to make the right selections and there is a huge amount of luck involved along the way as well.

Our depth is great but isn't just based on talented youth, its having guys like Joyce, McKenna, Gardiner, Fort as well as previous depth like Dev, Sam Day and probably a heap more that are no longer at the club, that are all above the age where as touched on by the comments Hinkley made that someone had posted earlier, plenty of clubs would be looking to move them to have more room for youth that statistically is unlikely to make the level and unlikely to be good enough to come in and do a role for anywhere between 1 game and half a season.

I was listening to an old episode of BT's podcast because the guests they have on their are normally pretty good, but he was talking about how in the last draft North didn't have a pick until pick 16 because he didn't know or didn't accept that they had traded their first pick to Richmond in the 2024 period.

IIRC GC traded a lot of picks and players to end up with what was originally a few first round picks that could be traded to other clubs for lesser picks to get the points but they still had to have something close to the points in early picks before the last years trade period/draft. The public is willfully ignorant of the trades that clubs have to make to get the points and the media is complicit in fanning outrage for clicks. I get the feeling that the ignorant believe (and why wouldn't they) that us or GC, Sydney whoever it is, are getting to use junk picks for a top 10 pick and then still getting to use their natural pick.

I believe that the rules around F/S and Academy should be based over a few years, GC has had 9 first round academy picks in the last 3 drafts (+1 3rd round), but they have done a hell of a lot of work to gather points for those picks it hasn't been as simple as collecting second and third rounders while holding on to all their players and first round picks. We wiped out our 2023 draft hand so we could take both Ashcroft and Fletcher in 2022, so over 2022 and 2023 we had two first round draft picks.
