I'll be interested to see the US media's reaction to this senseless tragedy. My guess is rather than focussing on the real issue of handguns, they'll focus on the metal scene.

And of course the Religious right will think all their chickens have come home to roost as well. You can see them now saying 'it's the devil's' music again' causing all these problems.

You could be right, and it'd be unfortunate if you were, because Darrell and the fans killed appears to have been very innocent victims in all of this. It seems the gunman may have had a grudge to bear, on the basis that he thought Darrell split up Pantera... hardly something to shoot someone over.

Neither Pantera or Damageplan represented Satanism or evil, nor did they use it as part of their image or content.

Much like with the court case involving two Judas Priest fans attempting suicide (one succeeded, the other is permanently disfigured as a result), it's not a case of the music causing it, but a case of some fans of the music having severe mental problems, as would no doubt happen across all genres.

Would that be a loss though?
Could be a good thing. Probably the only way we'll ever get to hear the stuff he's recorded with the new band.

Terrible shame about Darrel. Great player, great performer, and a great drinker - all the things a guitar god should be.

its seems like the gunners motive wasnt just that Dimebag split up Pantera but more that he thought Dimebag and Pantera had stolen his identity and his songs. Seems like a complete nutter.

Nightclub shooter was 'off his rocker'
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The man who fatally shot former Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three others at a nightclub was obsessed with the heavy metal band, a onetime friend said yesterday .
Jeramie Brey said gunman Nathan Gale once showed up at a friend's house saying he wanted to share songs he had written. The lyrics were copied from Pantera, but Gale claimed he had written them, Mr. Brey said.
"He was off his rocker," Mr. Brey told the Columbus Dispatch. "He said they were his songs, that Pantera stole them from him and that he was going to sue them."
The 25-year-old charged the stage at a show Wednesday by Mr. Abbott's new band, Damageplan, and gunned down four persons before a police officer fatally shot him.

Its just so f*cked up.

Meant to write in this thread earlier but forgot to. Definately f**ked up. Dimebag wrote some of the most infectious riffs you'll hear. Tracks like Mouth for War and 5 Minutes Alone got me into metal. Such a shame. Im glad I got to see Pantera live before this happened.

Same. I'm glad I got the privilege to see "Floods" performed live and see Dime's killer solo..

The police say that they have video footage of the entire shooting incident. I wonder if it will ever surface on the net? And if it did, would you watch it - knowing what happened?

I really really hope that doesnt happen, but almost as certain as death and taxes, that video footage will show up on the internet. And no doubt sooner rather than later.

I personally dont dig that sh*t as a rule, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

But that footage in particular I will be especially avoiding it at all costs. I still get a bit messy when i think about what happened and all that goes along with it. I really dont think actually seeing it will be something i want to be doing.

Absolutely terrible thing to happen. I saw them twice in 1994, then once in 2001, and I'm glad I did now. Met them at a '94 instore - wouldn't sell the signed booklet for quids.

6 years on....

Time has flown, and the man is still one of the most revered guitarists of the modern generation.

It still saddens me greatly to know that a musician could be taken in such a way, and knowing that his brother saw it all before him only makes it worse.

R.I.P Dime.

Thoughts also for the other innocent victims who went to the show and never got home, Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, Erin Halk and Nathan Bray.

Read this last year

Not bad.

Also, going to a 'D and R' party for NYE

Tossing up over going as Dimebag or a Ramone

Cheers for the heads up on the book.

I remember reading a story not long after Dimebag's murder about him being backstage with a kid with cancer after a show one night.
The kid was there to apparently see Slayer, and all his mother wanted to do was tart around with the members of the bands.
It was said that Dime saw the little bloke, looking sort of lost amongst the adults and the awkwardness of his mother, took him to the side and started jamming along on a guitar showing the kid a few chords and licks before giving him a guitar of his own.

There was plenty of stories of just how humble the guy was and approachable he was, floating around on the net after his death, but sadly I just can't find them now.

What a stupid thread title.
"Yeh sorry Dimebag, got some bad news, you've been murdered....."
Yeah, but there's not much point changing now...although I thought about it.
