Melbourne coach Dean Bailey expects any club in the running for gun West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr to hold the upper hand at the negotiating table.

Kerr is understood to be up for grabs at the end of the season, however, the Eagles are expected to demand two top-10 selections in this year's highly-touted draft in exchange for the 25-year-old.

Bailey all but ruled the Demons out of contention for the 2006 premiership star on Thursday.

"He's a very good player Daniel Kerr. Maybe someone might be prepared to trade out a first-round pick," Bailey said.

"The negotiation would be heavily in favour of the team that wants to get him."

"It's going to be tough but anything's possible."

"We'll keep our picks, we won't be trading. We want to keep our first pick and as of today there's also 17 and 19. We'll be really keen to keep our picks."

The rookie coach said using the Demons' selections on building a side from the ground up was his philosophy.

"We have a young list now and this year it's important that we draft well," he said.

"Every year you should draft well. You can't pick and choose drafts and you have to ensure you put all of the work into it so you can produce and develop players."

"We've got a young list now, we'll have a young list again next year."

"How we coach and how we develop them is super important."

Bailey said there were positives in a season he conceded was 'very disappointing' and 'not good enough'.

"We're in a business where win-loss is important. It's been a very disappointing year from a win-loss point of view."

"The positive to come out of it is Jack (Grimes) becomes the seventh debutant that's going to represent Melbourne (this season)."

"We've played 39 players of our list, we've given great exposure to young players and we've given them game times during games where they've had to fight their way back in."

"Win-loss, not good enough, but we've clearly shown the direction we will be taking and we've clearly shown the decisions we make will be based around developing a young team for the future."

West Coast would be especially keen to offload Kerr - more now so that they know the GC will get the majority of quality kids in 2010, it would be important that WC got their hands on as many quality kids over the next 2 yrs as they can, same goes for us really..

Im glad Bailey said we arent chasing Kerr, it would be waste to chase any big name player over the age of 22-23, thats only my opinion..
and thats only in terms of where I think the clubs future is at and what best suits us..

IMO Kerr is over rated. He doesn't have nearly the same impact on games that he did when he had Cousins and Judd taking the focus off him. If someone gives up 2 picks that high for him they are out of their mind.

yeah, I go along with that. Also, if you think about Judd, Cousins and Kerr when they played interstate for the Eagles (IMO anyway) Judd and Cousins were the ones that stick out more for breaking games. Kerr is great on his own track at the bigger Subiaco ground but interstate I would say solid but not brilliant.

I don't want him either. WE are rebuilding, he's the type of player a club who feels they are a genuine contender in the coming years should go after. The opportunity cost would be to great.

I am with Bailey on this one

While Kerr is a ready made footballer it does show Bailey,s faith in the players he has already and whom he and his recruiting people choose in the future

Geelong has chosen this path and has reaped the benefits albeit with some quite outstanding father son inclusions

This quick fix is full of flaws

This one man will make the difference is pure romantic hogwash

Judd is no doubt an example of one player who has made an immeadiate impact for the Blues

But let me remind you that Carlton are NOT playing in this years finals series

Getting their next year isnt guarranteed and even if they did would Judd,s inclusion create a Flag

Getting another year under carltons young guns will ceratinly have a far greater impact than anything else IMO

Just the same as it has done with Geelong and Hawthorn in their rebuilding era

Thats the Melbourne i want to see going forward

What do we have to offer, though.

Players? NOPE

# 1 pick? ROFL

Easy for Bailey to say we won't take him, we can't.

Wouldn't think he would be a great example off field for the young blokes either.A large part of footy success is also attitude.

We need good leaders at MFC.
