Ridiculous thread.

For a start you seriously underestimate how far back we're coming from.
There is nothing wrong whatsoever with this also being a development year.

Melbourne IMO were rash to sack Bailey. They could still make the 8!
Knee jerk amateur decision. I hope Dimma and our club learns nothing from that rabble.

fair call... :thumbsu: ...

Did they tire after round 9?

if thats the case why did they blossom after round nine last year, the tired excuse is crap.

If they were tired why wernt they rested?

it all points to a coaching group that needs mentoring.......

been reading this thread from the start and it seems the debate is all one thing or the other.
there is a time to play and focus on kids and there is a time to pick your best sides.
for me the lack of, no the dearth of quality 23 plus yr old players means the focus is clearly on kids, in saying this i think it important we put as many big bodied experienced players around those kids as is practicable.
there is really no point in playing a shedload of players who you are reasonably sure are both below standard and no part of the future.

if we insist on only playing our kids having proved themselves we wont play any kids at all bar the odd one. this is not where we are at.

seems to me playing and persevering with older below standard players who can give a little more than kids in the short term is the major reason why we find ourselves in the position we are now. its been the done thing at our club and supporters are suggesting we continue to do it.
theres a balance that we have to find but for now the emphasis has to be on youth.

finally the reason i quoted this post. did we blossom at some stage last yr after rnd nine, sheesh i must have missed it.
i saw us beat a few very ordinary sides about half way thru the season,i also saw us win just 1 of the last 7 when the going got tough again.
what a furphy it is when people suggest we did well and dramatically improved at a stage last yr, what bollocks.

I'm liking the new and improved santa claws. :thumbsu:

So the real lesson For Hardwick is to make sure HE is steering the ship, because if the shit hits the fan like it did for Bailey he will go down with it.

Looking back at Baileys onfield results it's a no brainer to sack him..... but when those results "were" for the good of the Melbourne football club he still gets a bad name.
I just dont get the feeling that Hardwick is the Captain of the ship and he is sitting back waiting for the football department to hand the reigns to him....

Time will tell, we just need to keep following the path, we may find out Dimma is not a great gameday coach and is more suited to a similar role that Bailey had of developing kids etc.. later to be replaced when the list is cherry ripe, I'm sure he was aware of all this before signing anyway, and from what I know he recommended getting games into kids in his interview, so everyone would be aware of what that entails. We can't see Hardwicks term as a failure even if he was to get the chop, because he's done the best thing he could for the club. I hope he is a great coach, but that will be seen when he gets some decent and experienced players playing under him.

Personally I think there is too many hidden faces behind the scenes.... and Craig Cameron has a bigger say in dealings that we are lead to believe. Fundamentally he is Hardwicks boss which is just incredible when Hardwick is the one who shelves all the blame when things goes bad.

Hypothetically, if Hardwick is sacked at the end of 2012, then Gary March and Craig Cameron need too go as well. Those two have been there with the crap and need too leave like any other under performing personnel!

Excellent post, I agree.

The Mathews article on afl.com.au is insightful in that it brings home that more now than ever, the coaches take, as always, final responsibility for failure, but it is the staff around him (assistants/player devt etc, and more importantly, the leadership group of players, who hide from taking responsibility, when they are more than ever responsible.

Mathews names the people concerned at both Adelaide and Melbourne, so who are they at Richmond? I don't mean president/CEO, but assistants/player development and leadership group...

I only know:
Ruck- Lade
Midfield-Campbell?
Players-Newman/Cotchin

You just dont get it. It is about setting standards and developing a culture. Picking the best team each week and giving players games based on merit is a fundamental of any succesfull sporting organisation. It gives players who are not currently being picked hope that as long as they perform they will be given a fair and equal opportunity and it tells the players who are currently getting picked that they must keep performing to hold thier place.

Dont complain in a couple of years if we havent developed a winning culture when players are not being picked on merit for the now.

This whole premiership window cr.p has confused the bulk of the competition into believing that in most years they cannot win, so there is no point trying.

What you don't seem to understand is at the current stage of our rebuild we don't have enough players to play them on merit, do to this you need depth and we just don't have this yet, some of you live in a dream, I mean Nut honestly one year and that's all you give Hardwick, if we did what you guys suggest then nothing would have changed since Danny Frawley was here, play to win the odd game with no thought to the future, next you'll be saying we should top up and we might make the finals.

Although Bailey won't be the coach to lead Melbourne out of the dark, he has set them on the way, if that is all we get out of Hardwick then that would still be our best achievement in 30 years, but none of this will happen without patience.

Although Bailey won't be the coach to lead Melbourne out of the dark, he has set them on the way,

I wouldn't be too convinced of that. They tanked for Scully and now he is likely to leave. You have a player revolt because of these tactics. You have years of suffering for Melbourne supporters and you have a club that has shown no loyalty to its playing list. Which suggests they will show no loyalty to the club. You have football department stabbing the coach in the back. On top of that you have the second worst loss of all time. You have a media personality stepping in to be football director against his will because they are that devoid of good people. Not how I would build a successful football club. Don't think anyone paid the electricity bill at Melbourne, because the lights aren't on and its as dark as it has ever been.

Please don't tell me this is how you would like Hardwick to leave the RFC. The thought is sickening.

I'm talking on the field, I know they were hammered last week, but their list is starting to look quite good, of course I believe our situation is quite different off the field and if we are to gain loyalty we need to show it and give Dimma the chance to show what he has got, and then judge him at the end of next year, when his contract is due for renewal.

I still feel that our players have belief in what Dimma is doing, not sure how it was at Melbourne but their problems seemed to have stemmed from the administration, but no matter what not many coaches survive a loss like that.
